Pigmented lesions of the conjunctiva.

A careful examination of the conjunctiva and ocular adnexa should be performed as part of a complete dermatologic examination. This article reviews the clinical presentation and classification of pigmented lesions of the conjunctiva. The histologic features of these conjunctival lesions are compared with those of pigmented lesions of the skin.

Melanoma arising in nevus spilus.

Nevus spilus is a pigmented skin lesion composed of a pigmented macule on which darker lesions appear at a later stage. There are an increasing number of reports of malignant melanoma occurring within these lesions, leading to greater concern regarding the malignant potential of these lesions. We describe the case of a fatal malignant melanoma arising in a congenital nevus spilus.

Sarcoidal foreign-body granulomatous dermatitis associated with ophthalmic drops.

Sarcoidal granulomas are found in sarcoidosis and in reactions to foreign materials. We report the case of an 81-year-old woman with glaucoma who presented with multiple brown-black asymptomatic papules over the chin and involving nasal mucosa and columella of 1-year duration. Biopsy of the nasal mucosa and cutaneous papules showed sarcoidal granulomas associated with brown-black intracellular pigment within multinucleated giant cells.

Diving suit dermatitis: a manifestation of Pseudomonas folliculitis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes a variety of cutaneous infections. Pseudomonas folliculitis has been associated with a number of activities, particularly bathing in contaminated water and the use of contaminated objects while bathing. We present two unique cases in which the subjects noted Pseudomonas folliculitis after recreational use of diving suits.

Prevalence of HTLV type I infection in Iran: a serological and genetic study.

Several publications describe the presence of the human T cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) in Jewish individuals born in Mash-had, Iran. We report here the results of HTLV-I serological and genetic studies in the non-Jewish population of Mash-had as well as a neighboring area: Gonbad-Kavous. Seven hundred and seven serum samples from Mash-had (694 healthy individuals and 13 patients with lymphoma) and 90 from Gonbad-Kavous were tested for HTLV antibodies by gelatin particle agglutination assay (PA) and confirmatory Western blots (WBs).
