This review discusses recent advances in the use of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) to host high heat and radiation-emitting cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) wastes. It examines the evolution of geopolymerization, mechanical properties, mineralogy, microstructure, and leaching behavior of Cs-and/or Sr-bearing AAMs, considering their chemical interaction with Cs and Sr nuclides and exposure to temperature and gamma radiation induced by Cs and Sr. The literature indicates that Cs and Sr slightly degrade the mechanical properties of AAMs, with Sr having a more pronounced effect.

The time-dependent interfacial adhesion between rock and fresh mortar is key for printing concrete linings in mountain tunnels. However, a scientific deficit exists in the time-dependent evolution of the interfacial adhesion, which can cause adhesion failure when printing tunnel lining. Nanoclay has the potential to increase the interfacial adhesion and eliminate the adhesion failure.

The effectiveness of 3D concrete printing (3DCP) relies on understanding the rheological properties of cementitious materials and their time-dependent evolution. These materials exhibit shear-thinning viscosity, an elastic region, and both static and dynamic yield stress, which are challenging to balance in 3DCP. Layer deformation can be caused by factors such as self-weight, the weight of subsequently deposited layers, and the stress induced by the nozzle pressing.

The present study explores the possibility of replacing blast furnace slag (BFS) with coal fly ash (FA) to produce alkali-activated material (AAM) concrete with hybrid precursors. With an increased FA replacement ratio, the reaction kinetics, fresh and hardened properties of AAM mixtures have been investigated. The retardation effect on the reaction kinetics with an increased FA content has been observed, which not only extended the induction period along with the heat flow evolution but also reduced the cumulative heat release up to 24 h.

Similar to conventional cast concrete, printable materials require reinforcement to counteract their low tensile strength. However, as traditional reinforcement strategies are not commonly used in 3D print applications, fiber reinforcement can serve as an alternative. This study aims to assess the influence of different polypropylene fiber lengths (3 and 6 mm, denoted as M3 and M6, respectively) and dosages (0.

Alkali-activated slag is considered as a sustainable construction material due to its environmentally friendly nature. To further promote the sustainable nature of alkali-activated slag, a sodium sulfate activator is suggested to be used since it can be obtained naturally and generates lower greenhouse gas emissions. However, the mixtures activated by sodium sulfate exhibit low early strength and very long setting times.

The microstructure of alkali-reactive aggregates, especially the spatial distribution of the pore and reactive silica phase, plays a significant role in the process of the alkali silica reaction (ASR) in concrete, as it determines not only the reaction front of ASR but also the localization of the produced expansive product from where the cracking begins. However, the microstructure of the aggregate was either simplified or neglected in the current ASR simulation models. Due to the various particle sizes and heterogeneous distribution of the reactive silica in the aggregate, it is difficult to obtain a representative microstructure at a desired voxel size by using non-destructive computed tomography (CT) or focused ion beam milling combined with scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM).

In order to modify the porous interfacial transition zone (ITZ) microstructure of concrete more efficiently, a method of coating aggregate surfaces by using several nanoparticles was evaluated in this study. The compressive strength, chloride penetration of sound, and pre-loading samples were assessed in relation to the type of coating materials used (slag, nano-CaCO, and nano-SiO) and the designed coating thickness (5, 10, and 15 μm). The ITZ microstructure was quantitatively determined via Backscattered electron (BSE) image analysis.

Three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP) has progressed rapidly in recent years. With the aim to realize both buildings and civil works without using any molding, not only has the need for reliable mechanical properties of printed concrete grown, but also the need for more durable and environmentally friendly materials. As a consequence of super positioning cementitious layers, voids are created which can negatively affect durability.

Hypothesis: Polycarboxylate ether (PCE) comb-copolymers are widely used as water reducing agents in the concrete industry while maintaining a high fluidity via the polymer adsorption to the cement particles. PCE copolymers with a broad range of structures are well established by Free radical polymerization, however, understanding the structure-property relationship is still complex due to the high polydispersity of PCE copolymers prepared by conventional polymerization. The influence of different structural parameters using well-defined polymeric structures is yet to be explored.

Concrete properties to a large extent depend on mix design and processing, currently leaving only limited options to actively modify concrete properties during or after casting. This paper gives a (p)review on a more advanced active control of properties of concrete, based on the application of external signals to trigger an intended response in the material, either in fresh or hardened state. Current practices in concrete industry that could be considered as active control are briefly summarized.

This study compares the differences and similarities of two types of superplasticizers—NSF (Naphthalene Sulfonate Formaldehyde) and PCE (PolyCarboxylate Ester)—in fresh cement paste systems, in terms of adsorption, dynamic yield stress, and thixotropic index. Results show that with either NSF or PCE addition, the more superplasticizer is added, the more it is adsorbed and the more it remains in the interstitial pore solution. The dynamic yield stress and thixotropic index also decrease with increasing addition the amount of either superplasticizer.

This work aims at providing a better understanding of the mechanical properties of the reaction rim in the alkali-silica reaction. The elastic modulus of the calcium alkali silicate constituting the reaction rim, which is formed at the interface between alkali silicate and Ca(OH)₂ in a chemically-idealized system of the alkali-silica reaction, was studied using nano-indentation. In addition, the corresponding calcium to silica mole ratio of the calcium alkali silicate was investigated.

This work is intended to provide a better understanding about the properties and roles of the reaction rim in an alkali-silica reaction. A simplified calcium-alkali-silicate system was created to simulate the multiple interactions among reactive silica, alkaline solution and portlandite near the aggregate surface during the formation and evolution of the reaction rim in an alkali-silica reaction. A transport barrier preventing the migration of calcium and silicate through itself was found on the interface between the alkali silicate and the calcium hydroxide.

Nowadays, more efforts towards sustainability are required from the concrete industry. Replacing traditional aggregates by recycled bottom ash (BA) from municipal solid waste incineration can contribute to this goal. Until now, only partial replacement has been considered to keep the concrete workability, strength and durability under control.

Freeze-thaw cycling stresses many environments which include porous media such as soil, rock and concrete. Climate change can expose new regions and subject others to a changing freeze-thaw frequency. Therefore, understanding and predicting the effect of freeze-thaw cycles is important in environmental science, the built environment and cultural heritage preservation.

The original central fatigue hypothesis suggested that fatigue during prolonged exercise might be due to higher 5-HT activity. Therefore, we examined the effects of acute administration of a selective 5-HT reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) on performance and thermoregulation. Eleven healthy trained male cyclists completed four experimental trials (two in 18 degrees C, two in 30 degrees C) in a double-blind randomised crossover design.

Unlabelled: The combination of acute dopamine/noradrenaline reuptake inhibition (bupropion; BUP) and heat stress (30 degrees C) significantly improves performance (9%). Furthermore the maintenance of a higher power output resulted in the attainment of significantly higher heart rates and rectal temperatures--above 40 degrees C--in the BUP trial compared to the placebo trial. Since BUP is an aid to cease smoking that is taken for longer periods, question remains if similar performance and thermoregulatory effects are found following administration of BUP over several days (10 days).

Combined inhibition of dopamine (DA)/norepinephrine (NE) reuptake improves exercise performance and increases core temperature in the heat. A recent study demonstrated that this effect may primarily be related to increased DA activity. NE reuptake inhibition (NERI), however, has received little attention in humans, certainly in the heat, where central fatigue appears to be a main factor influencing performance.
