Post-esophagectomy patients presenting for general anesthesia induction: a survey of practice among US anesthesiologists (PESO-GAIN-S).

Purpose: Following esophagectomy, annually several thousand patients in the United States (US) reach a stable post-esophagectomy status. Such patients may require general anesthesia (GA) for elective procedures, but no generally accepted guidelines exist for the induction of GA in post-esophagectomy patients.

Methods: A national survey describing a post-esophagectomy patient was emailed to 23,524 attending anesthesiologists who were members of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Morphological and Clinical Characterization of Foveal Bulge Sign Three Years After Retinal Detachment Repair: A Longitudinal Prospective Evaluation.

Purpose: To evaluate optical-coherence-tomography (OCT)-morphological and clinical parameters three years after primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair surgery and the role of postoperative foveal bulge sign.

Methods: Of the 32 initially enrolled patients with primary RRD 20 (14 fovea-on, 6 fovea-off) completed this prospective study. Preoperatively and 3 years after surgery best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and OCT including macula status, central retinal thickness (CRT), central choroidal thickness (CCT), thickness of each single retinal layer, integrity of cone-interdigitation-zone (CIZ) and ellipsoid zone (EZ), and presence of foveal bulge were evaluated.

A survey study of Alzheimer's stigma among Black adults: intersectionality of Black identity and biomarker diagnosis.

Objective: We urgently need to understand Alzheimer's disease (AD) stigma among Black adults. Black communities bear a disproportionate burden of AD, and recent advances in early diagnosis using AD biomarkers may affect stigma associated with AD. The goal of our study is to characterize AD stigma within our cohort of self-identified Black participants and test how AD biomarker test results may affect this stigma.

It has been hypothesized that the excreted nitrite represents excess nitrogen that cannot be further assimilated due to the missing carbon, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear. Here, we identified a protein that interacts with nitrite reductase, regulates nitrogen metabolism and promotes nitrite excretion.

Assessment of seizure duration and utility of using SedLine EEG tracing in veterans undergoing electroconvulsive therapy: a retrospective analysis.

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) endures as a definitive treatment for refractory depression and catatonia and is also considered an effective treatment for a number of other severe psychiatric disorders (Lisanby, N Engl J Med 357:1939-1945, 2007)(Weiner and Prudic, Biol Psychiatry 73:105-106, 2013). Introduction: The aim of this study was to describe differences in the vitreomacular interface (VMI) in idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) foveoschisis compared to macular pseudohole (MPH) and lamellar macular hole (LMH).

Methods: We analysed surgically excised epiretinal material and internal limiting membrane (ILM) specimens obtained from 16 eyes of 16 patients with ERM foveoschisis (6 eyes), MPH (5 eyes), and LMH (5 eyes) during standard pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with membrane peeling. The three entities were classified according to the newly introduced optical coherence tomography (OCT) terminology.

Neuraxial Anesthesia in Patients With Aortic Stenosis: A Systematic Review.

Neuraxial anesthesia (NA) has been contraindicated in patients with aortic stenosis (AS) due to concerns of sympathetic blockade and hemodynamic instability. These considerations are based on precautionary expert recommendations, supported by expected physiologic effects, but in the absence of any published scientific evidence. In light of the increasing elderly population and the prevalence of AS, this systematic review compiles available literature on NA in patients with AS to address the understanding of the anesthetic practice and safety in this population.

Mapping the Path to Cognitive Balance: Applying the States of Mind Model and Network Analysis to Eating Disorder Patients.

PORES OF THE INTERNAL LIMITING MEMBRANE: A Common Finding in Vitreomaculopathies.

Purpose: To describe presence and distribution of pores of the inner limiting membrane (ILM) in eyes with vitreomaculopathies.

Methods: Inner limiting membrane specimens were harvested from 117 eyes of 117 patients during vitrectomy with membrane peeling from eyes with vitreomacular traction syndrome, idiopathic and secondary epiretinal gliosis, and idiopathic full-thickness macular hole. All specimens were processed as flat-mounts for immunocytochemistry and examined by phase-contrast, interference, and fluorescence microscopy.

The Need to Control Thoughts in Eating Disorder Outpatients: A Longitudinal Study on Its Modification and Association with Eating Disorder Symptom Improvement.

The metacognition of needing to control thoughts has been implicated in eating disorders (EDs)-specifically, in association with the drive for thinness and over-control. To date, it has yet to be investigated longitudinally in ED outpatients undergoing CBT-based treatment. The current study aims to examine whether endorsing a need to control thoughts undergoes modifications during CBT-based treatment for EDs and whether its modification correlates with treatment response in terms of reduced ED symptomatology.
