We revisit the hypotheses that conservatism positively correlates with amygdala and negatively with anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) gray matter volume.Using diverse measures of ideology and a large and representative sample (Amsterdam Open MRI Collection [n = 928]), we replicate a small positive relationship between amygdala volume and conservatism. However, we fail to find consistent evidence in support of the ideology-ACC volume link.

Opinion formation and information processing are affected by unconscious affective responses to stimuli-particularly in politics. Yet we still know relatively little about such affective responses and how to measure them. In this study, we focus on emotional valence and examine facial electromyography (fEMG) measures.

We report the first observation of the quantum Joule-Thomson (JT) effect in ideal and unitary Fermi gases. We study the temperature dynamics of these systems while they undergo an energy-per-particle conserving rarefaction. For scale-invariant systems, whose equations of state satisfy the relation U∝PV, this rarefaction conserves the specific enthalpy, which makes it thermodynamically equivalent to a JT throttling process.

Co-exposure to multiple parasites can alter parasite success and host life history when compared to single infections. These infection outcomes can be affected by the order of parasite arrival, the host immune response, and the interspecific interactions among co-infecting parasites. In this study, we examined how the arrival order of two trematode parasites, Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma caproni, influenced parasite ecology and the life history of their snail host, Biomphalaria glabrata.

Background: Clinical trials have shown reduced incisional hernia rates 1 year after elective median laparotomy closure using a short-stitch technique. With hernia development continuing beyond the first postoperative year, we aimed to compare incisional hernias 3 years after midline closure using short or long stitches in patients from the ESTOIH trial.

Methods: The ESTOIH trial was a prospective, multicenter, parallel-group, double-blind, randomized-controlled study of primary elective midline closure.

What explains the variation in tone in politics? Different literatures argue that changes in the tone of politicians reflect changes in the economy, general language, well-being, or ideology. So far, these claims have been empirically tested only in isolation, in single country studies, or with a small subset of indicators. We offer an overarching view by modelling the use of tone in European national parliaments in 7 countries across 30 years.

Two headphone systems using different sound systems were compared to investigate the effects of a sound intervention on cardiovascular parameters, indicators of stress, and subjective feelings. One hundred volunteers who work in the health care sector reporting elevated workplace-related stress were enrolled and randomized to a 12-min sound intervention (classical music) with either conventional headphones ("MEZE 99 Classic") or with the same-but internally modified-headphone (called "Lautsaenger"). Cardiovascular parameters were measured with the VascAssist2.

Open-field activity is a commonly used measure of anxiety-related behavior in rodents. The inbred High and Low Activity strains of mice, selected for extreme differences in open-field activity, have been used as a genetic model of anxiety-related behaviors. These selected strains have been thoroughly studied through extensive behavioral testing, quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping, whole-genome sequencing, and RNA sequencing, to uncover phenotypic and genotypic differences related to anxiety-related behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • Vascular age (VA) is a new measure in cardiovascular health that can be determined using either carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) or pulse wave analysis (PWA), but this study found that their results often differ.
  • In a study with 100 volunteers aged 39.8 to 62.6 years, VA was calculated using both methods, revealing significant discrepancies: CIMT-derived ages varied widely depending on reference data, while about 46% of participants had conflicting VAs from each method.
  • The findings highlight the need for standardizing these techniques, as the current lack of comparability can lead to confusion regarding cardiovascular risk assessment.

We report the creation and the study of the stability of a repulsive quasihomogeneous spin-1/2 Fermi gas with contact interactions. For the range of scattering lengths a explored, the dominant mechanism of decay is a universal three-body recombination toward a Feshbach bound state. We observe that the recombination coefficient K_{3}∝ε_{kin}a^{6}, where the first factor, the average kinetic energy per particle ε_{kin}, arises from a three-body threshold law, and the second one from the universality of recombination.

Emotional displays of politicians can be persuasive. According to prominent psychological theories, we can easily "catch" the emotional displays of others through mimicry and emotional contagion. Do these processes work for politicians too, or is it conditional on what voters think of the politician making the display? In a preregistered within-subjects laboratory experiment, participants observed images of neutral and manipulated emotional displays of politicians.

Emerging immunotherapies quest for better patient stratification in cancer treatment decisions. Moderate response rates of PD-1 inhibition in gastric and esophagogastric junction cancers urge for meaningful human model systems that allow for investigating immune responses . Here, the standardized patient-derived tissue culture (PDTC) model was applied to investigate tumor response to the PD-1 inhibitor Nivolumab and the CD3/CD28 t-lymphocyte activator ImmunoCult.

Purpose: The short-stitch technique for midline laparotomy closure has been shown to reduce hernia rates, but long stitches remain the standard of care and the effect of the short-stitch technique on short-term results is not well known. The aim of this study was to compare the two techniques, using an ultra-long-term absorbable elastic suture material.

Methods: Following elective midline laparotomy, 425 patients in 9 centres were randomised to receive wound closure using the short-stitch (USP 2-0 single thread, n = 215) or long-stitch (USP 1 double loop, n = 210) technique with a poly-4-hydroxybutyrate-based suture material (Monomax).

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the impact of a 15-minute sound intervention on cardiovascular parameters in cancer patients compared to a rest period.
  • Cardiovascular metrics such as heart rate variability (HRV) and aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) showed significant improvements after the sound intervention, indicating beneficial effects on heart health.
  • While both rest and sound intervention reduced heart rate, only rest showed a significant increase in systolic aortic blood pressure, highlighting differing effects between the two interventions.

In the political domain, disgust is primarily portrayed as an emotion that explains individual differences in pathogen avoidance. We hypothesized that political rhetoric accusing opponents of moral transgressions also elicits disgust responses. In this registered report, we present the results from a laboratory experiment.

About a decade ago, a study documented that conservatives have stronger physiological responses to threatening stimuli than liberals. This work launched an approach aimed at uncovering the biological roots of ideology. Despite wide-ranging scientific and popular impact, independent laboratories have not replicated the study.

  • P2-type Fe- and Mn-based layered sodium transition metal oxides are potential materials for sodium batteries, offering high energy density and low costs, but struggle with poor structural reversibility and rapid capacity decline.
  • Real-time studies reveal that during the battery's discharge, an intermediate OP4 phase forms before transitioning to an irreversible ramsdellite phase, which hampers performance.
  • The findings suggest that stabilizing the crystal structure through substitutions or chemical modifications could enhance the cycling performance of these materials.

There is some evidence that liberal politicians use more complex language than conservative politicians. This evidence, however, is based on a specific set of speeches of US members of Congress and UK members of Parliament. This raises the question whether the relationship between ideology and linguistic complexity is a more general phenomenon or specific to this small group of politicians.

The policy positions parties choose are central to both attracting voters and forming coalition governments. How then should parties choose positions to best represent voters? Laver and Sergenti show that in an agent-based model with boundedly rational actors a decision rule (Aggregator) that takes the mean policy position of its supporters is the best rule to achieve high congruence between voter preferences and party positions. But this result only pertains to representation by the legislature, not representation by the government.

The human arterial vascular tree can be described by multicompartment models using electrical components. First introduced in the 1960s by Noordergraaf and Westerhof, these hardware-based approaches required several simplifications. We were able to remove the restrictions using modern software simulation tools and improve overall model quality considerably.
