Is political ideology correlated with brain structure? A preregistered replication.

We revisit the hypotheses that conservatism positively correlates with amygdala and negatively with anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) gray matter volume.Using diverse measures of ideology and a large and representative sample (Amsterdam Open MRI Collection [n = 928]), we replicate a small positive relationship between amygdala volume and conservatism. However, we fail to find consistent evidence in support of the ideology-ACC volume link.

Establishing the validity and robustness of facial electromyography measures for political science.

Opinion formation and information processing are affected by unconscious affective responses to stimuli-particularly in politics. Yet we still know relatively little about such affective responses and how to measure them. In this study, we focus on emotional valence and examine facial electromyography (fEMG) measures.

Observation of the Fermionic Joule-Thomson Effect.

We report the first observation of the quantum Joule-Thomson (JT) effect in ideal and unitary Fermi gases. We study the temperature dynamics of these systems while they undergo an energy-per-particle conserving rarefaction. For scale-invariant systems, whose equations of state satisfy the relation U∝PV, this rarefaction conserves the specific enthalpy, which makes it thermodynamically equivalent to a JT throttling process.

Order and timing of infection with different parasite life stages impacts host and parasite life histories.

Co-exposure to multiple parasites can alter parasite success and host life history when compared to single infections. These infection outcomes can be affected by the order of parasite arrival, the host immune response, and the interspecific interactions among co-infecting parasites. In this study, we examined how the arrival order of two trematode parasites, Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma caproni, influenced parasite ecology and the life history of their snail host, Biomphalaria glabrata.

Three-year follow-up analysis of the short-stitch versus long-stitch technique for elective midline abdominal closure randomized-controlled (ESTOIH) trial.

Background: Clinical trials have shown reduced incisional hernia rates 1 year after elective median laparotomy closure using a short-stitch technique. With hernia development continuing beyond the first postoperative year, we aimed to compare incisional hernias 3 years after midline closure using short or long stitches in patients from the ESTOIH trial.

Methods: The ESTOIH trial was a prospective, multicenter, parallel-group, double-blind, randomized-controlled study of primary elective midline closure.

Tone in politics is not systematically related to macro trends, ideology, or experience.

What explains the variation in tone in politics? Different literatures argue that changes in the tone of politicians reflect changes in the economy, general language, well-being, or ideology. So far, these claims have been empirically tested only in isolation, in single country studies, or with a small subset of indicators. We offer an overarching view by modelling the use of tone in European national parliaments in 7 countries across 30 years.

Hemodynamic and Stress Response After Sound Intervention with Different Headphone Systems: A Double-Blind Randomized Study in Healthy Volunteers Working in the Health Care Sector.

Two headphone systems using different sound systems were compared to investigate the effects of a sound intervention on cardiovascular parameters, indicators of stress, and subjective feelings. One hundred volunteers who work in the health care sector reporting elevated workplace-related stress were enrolled and randomized to a 12-min sound intervention (classical music) with either conventional headphones ("MEZE 99 Classic") or with the same-but internally modified-headphone (called "Lautsaenger"). Cardiovascular parameters were measured with the VascAssist2.

Diazepam effects on anxiety-related defensive behavior of male and female high and low open-field activity inbred mouse strains.

Open-field activity is a commonly used measure of anxiety-related behavior in rodents. The inbred High and Low Activity strains of mice, selected for extreme differences in open-field activity, have been used as a genetic model of anxiety-related behaviors. These selected strains have been thoroughly studied through extensive behavioral testing, quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping, whole-genome sequencing, and RNA sequencing, to uncover phenotypic and genotypic differences related to anxiety-related behavior.

Stability of the Repulsive Fermi Gas with Contact Interactions.

We report the creation and the study of the stability of a repulsive quasihomogeneous spin-1/2 Fermi gas with contact interactions. For the range of scattering lengths a explored, the dominant mechanism of decay is a universal three-body recombination toward a Feshbach bound state. We observe that the recombination coefficient K_{3}∝ε_{kin}a^{6}, where the first factor, the average kinetic energy per particle ε_{kin}, arises from a three-body threshold law, and the second one from the universality of recombination.

Facing emotional politicians: Do emotional displays of politicians evoke mimicry and emotional contagion?

Emotional displays of politicians can be persuasive. According to prominent psychological theories, we can easily "catch" the emotional displays of others through mimicry and emotional contagion. Do these processes work for politicians too, or is it conditional on what voters think of the politician making the display? In a preregistered within-subjects laboratory experiment, participants observed images of neutral and manipulated emotional displays of politicians.

Effects of the short-stitch technique for midline abdominal closure: short-term results from the randomised-controlled ESTOIH trial.

Purpose: The short-stitch technique for midline laparotomy closure has been shown to reduce hernia rates, but long stitches remain the standard of care and the effect of the short-stitch technique on short-term results is not well known. The aim of this study was to compare the two techniques, using an ultra-long-term absorbable elastic suture material.

Methods: Following elective midline laparotomy, 425 patients in 9 centres were randomised to receive wound closure using the short-stitch (USP 2-0 single thread, n = 215) or long-stitch (USP 1 double loop, n = 210) technique with a poly-4-hydroxybutyrate-based suture material (Monomax).

Yikes! Are we disgusted by politicians?

In the political domain, disgust is primarily portrayed as an emotion that explains individual differences in pathogen avoidance. We hypothesized that political rhetoric accusing opponents of moral transgressions also elicits disgust responses. In this registered report, we present the results from a laboratory experiment.

Conservatives and liberals have similar physiological responses to threats.

About a decade ago, a study documented that conservatives have stronger physiological responses to threatening stimuli than liberals. This work launched an approach aimed at uncovering the biological roots of ideology. Despite wide-ranging scientific and popular impact, independent laboratories have not replicated the study.

Liberals lecture, conservatives communicate: Analyzing complexity and ideology in 381,609 political speeches.

There is some evidence that liberal politicians use more complex language than conservative politicians. This evidence, however, is based on a specific set of speeches of US members of Congress and UK members of Parliament. This raises the question whether the relationship between ideology and linguistic complexity is a more general phenomenon or specific to this small group of politicians.

Cryoprotectant toxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans.

We have looked at the effects of the cryoprotectant M22 upon viability in the model organism C. elegans. M22 is a well-known vitrification solution which has been successfully used in the laboratory to preserve organs destined for transplantation.

Genetic suppression of cryoprotectant toxicity.

We report here a new, unbiased forward genetic method that uses transposon-mediated mutagenesis to enable the identification of mutations that confer cryoprotectant toxicity resistance (CTR). Our method is to select for resistance to the toxic effects of M22, a much-studied whole-organ vitrification solution. We report finding and characterizing six mutants that are resistant to M22.

Governator vs. Hunter and Aggregator: A simulation of party competition with vote-seeking and office-seeking rules.

The policy positions parties choose are central to both attracting voters and forming coalition governments. How then should parties choose positions to best represent voters? Laver and Sergenti show that in an agent-based model with boundedly rational actors a decision rule (Aggregator) that takes the mean policy position of its supporters is the best rule to achieve high congruence between voter preferences and party positions. But this result only pertains to representation by the legislature, not representation by the government.

Multiple coupled resonances in the human vascular tree: refining the Westerhof model of the arterial system.

The human arterial vascular tree can be described by multicompartment models using electrical components. First introduced in the 1960s by Noordergraaf and Westerhof, these hardware-based approaches required several simplifications. We were able to remove the restrictions using modern software simulation tools and improve overall model quality considerably.
