Sarcopterygians evolved around 415 Ma and have developed a unique set of features, including the basilar papilla and the cochlear aqueduct of the inner ear. We provide an overview that shows the morphological integration of the various parts needed for hearing, e.g.

Patients with leukaemia can be identified using machine learning on the basis of their blood transcriptomes. However, there is an increasing divide between what is technically possible and what is allowed, because of privacy legislation.

Further activation of macrophages leads to a stimulus- or microenvironment-specific signal integration with subsequent transcriptional control established by the action of tissue- or signal-associated transcription factors.

Conventional measurement of the initial enzyme activity, which is the established high throughput screening technique, disregards the long-term stability of an enzyme. A new model based technique called "enzyme test bench" was recently presented before by our group which addresses this issue.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new high throughput technique for enzyme characterization with specific attention to the long term stability, called "Enzyme Test Bench," is presented. The concept of the Enzyme Test Bench consists of short term enzyme tests in 96-well microtiter plates under partly extreme conditions to predict the enzyme long term stability under moderate conditions. The technique is based on the mathematical modeling of temperature dependent enzyme activation and deactivation.

On average, their disorders tend to take a more chronic course than those of other patients, and they develop a higher rate of additional socio-medical problems, all of which increase the probability of therapy failure. Most of the time, such failures are attributed solely to the desire for early retirement and disability pensions, that is, a characteristic of the patient.

A comparison of the low temperature Raman spectra of Cp(3)Ce(NCCH(3))(2) (1), Cp(3)La(NCCH(3))(2) (2), Cp(3)La(NCCH(3))(2):Pr(3+) (3), Cp(3)La x NCCH(3) (4), Cp(3)Ce x NCCH(3) (5) and Cp(3)Tb x NCCH(3) (6) shows that the former compound exhibits three additional bands at 320, 2129 and 2154 cm(-1), which we ascribe to electronic Raman transitions. The two latter signals also appear in the low temperature IR spectrum of complex 1, but not in those of compounds 2-6. By performing crystal field (CF) calculations, the terminal states of the observed electronic Raman transitions could be identified.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA vertebral column consisting of a persistent notochord and ossified arcocentra is the primitive condition for Gnathostomata; it still persists in primitive actinopterygians and sarcopterygians. Advanced actinopterygians and sarcopterygians develop numerous types of centra that include, among others, the presence of holocentrum, chordacentrum, and autocentrum. The chordacentrum, a mineralization or calcification of the fibrous sheath of the notochord, is only found in actinopterygians, whereas an autocentrum is a synapomorphy of teleosts above Leptolepis coryphaenoides.

Here, we have investigated the role of hyperhomocysteinemia in two elderly groups: 104 longeval subjects of 85-102 years, 100 seniors aged 65-75 years, and 75 controls of 19-60 years. Elevated homocysteine levels were found in 58% of longeval subjects in comparison with 32% in seniors.

The occurrence of primitive neuroectodermal tumors located in the uterus is extremely rare. Eight cases have been described in the literature, and with the addition of this ninth case, we summarize treatment and outcome of PNET located in the uterine cavity.

We found that the supernatants of all 3 CRC cell lines inhibited T-cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, due to the secretion of immunosuppressive factors (ISFs). In addition, the supernatants of 2 cell lines were able to inhibit LAK-cell generation and to depress IL-2R, but not HLA-DR expression, on PHA-activated T cells.

A new approach to performing angioplasty of the right or left internal carotid artery utilizing the brachial artery was used after failure of the transfemoral approach in 5 lesions (4 patients). The common carotid artery was cannulated with performed 5F catheters.

The ossification of elements forming the caudal skeleton follows the same sequence, independent of size and age at first appearance. Dermal bones like principal caudal rays ossify earlier than chondral bones; among dermal bones, the middle principal caudal rays ossify before the ventral and dorsal ones.

These workers also provide a list of morphological features shared in common between modern lungfish and tetrapods, and they conclude that these traits were probably present in their last common ancestor. However, the exquisite fossil records of the abundant extinct lungfishes and rhipidistians show that at least 13 out of Meyer and Wilson's 14 supposed ancestral traits were not present in the last common ancestor of lungfishes and tetrapods.

The palatoquadrate forms the upper part of the mandibular arch and is present as a single cartilaginous element in the early ontogeny of teleostomes, except for some advanced teleosts such as siluroids where it is divided into pars autopalatina and pars pterygoquadrata. During ontogeny, the palatoquadrate may ossify as a unit, with a pars autopalatina (absent in Acanthodii), pars quadrata, and pars metapterygoidea in teleostomes (e.

The functional urethral length (FUL), the maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP), and the urethro vesical quotient (u/v) have been measured in 32 women suffering from urinary stress incontinence. The pressure was registrated in four different sectors of the urethra (left, posterior, right, anterior). We found statistical significant differences (t-Test, Wilcoxon-Test).

Using a retrospective investigation the authors demonstrate the advantage of the modified Sarafoff-suture (a one layer suture of the myometrium) in comparison with the two-layer suture. The results shows a lower rate of febrile courses, less postoperative complications and a shorter hospital stay. The first clinical experiences showed less scar complications in the courses of vaginal delivery in patients with a previous caesarean section.

This phenomenon is briefly discussed on the basis of the literature. The children should be protected from extensive diagnostical measures.
