Over a 6-year period 179 patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung (SCLC), 152 with limited disease, 25 with extensive disease, and 2 who were not staged, were treated with chest irradiation and combination chemotherapy with CCNU, adriamycin and vinblastine. For all patients the 2-year survival was 19.9 +/- 3 per cent, and the 5-year survival 11.

This report deals with the preliminary results of trials in the DATECA project with stage I, II and III patients with non-seminomatous germ cell tumours. Stage I patients were randomized between infradiaphragmatic irradiation and observation. No significant difference in recurrence rates has been observed as yet.

Since Jan. 1, 1976, nearly all new cases of testicular germ cell tumours have been included in the Danish Testicular Carcinoma Study (DATECA), and have been monitored by the tumour markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). During the first five years, 1058 patients participated in the investigation, but only 603 of these patients were followed by preoperative as well as postoperative marker determinations in serum.

Over a five-year period the DATECA Study included 554 consecutive patients with seminoma, representing practically all cases in the country. The stage distribution was: stage I 424 patients, stage II 110 patients, and stage III 17 patients. Typical seminoma was registered in 515 patients, anaplastic seminoma in 26 patients, and spermatocytic seminoma in 13 patients.

Over a 5-year period (1976-1980) 499 patients with non-seminomatous testicular germ cell tumours were included in the Danish Testicular Carcinoma Study (DATECA). The 3-year crude survival for patients in clinical stages I, II and III was 91, 77 and 45 per cent, respectively. In stage I the relapse-free survival for patients given radiation combined with bleomycin and vincristine was significantly higher than that for patients given radiation alone.

Prognostic factors in carcinoma of the testis were studied in 1058 adult patients treated in Denmark from 1976 to 1980. Separate analyses of the prognostic factors were carried out within the subgroups formed by a classification of the patients according to main histologic type (seminoma, non-seminoma) and the clinicoradiologic stage (I, II and III). The prognosis was measured by relapse-free survival (stage I and II), and survival (stage II and III).

Since Jan. 1, 1976 practically all new cases of germ cell tumours of the testis in Denmark have been included in the Danish Testicular Carcinoma Study (DATECA), permitting detailed registration of data concerning histology and stage at the time of diagnosis. The incidence of carcinoma of the testis in Denmark continues to be high with a crude rate of 8 to 9/100 000 males per year.

In the first five-year period of the Danish Testicular Carcinoma Study (DATECA) 1058 consecutive testicular germ cell tumours were examined. Of these, 554 were seminomas comprising 515 of typical type, 26 anaplastic and 13 spermatocytic; 497 were non-seminomas comprising 145 pure tumours and 352 mixed tumours of various types. Among the various subtypes of non-seminomas embryonal carcinoma (EC) was recorded in 87 per cent, endodermal sinus tumour (yolk sac tumour; EST) in 22 per cent, teratoma (T) in 55 per cent and choriocarcinoma (CC) in 17 per cent.

Human bone marrow cells from normal subjects were density-separated in continuous density gradients of the Percoll medium. The distribution of cells showed a linear relationship between morphologic maturation and increasing density. The method was used to characterize the target cell of the growth-stimulating effect of ultrasonically irradiated (UI) serum.

The influence of arterial baroreceptors on secretion of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla was evaluated by several methods. Conscious mongrel dogs with surgically denervated hearts were hemorrhaged until an estimated 16% of their blood volume had been removed. On a separate day they were anesthetized and their blood pressure was lowered with intravenous nitroglycerin.

Twenty-four patients with residual tumor after intensive chemotherapy for advanced testicular germ-cell tumors were subjected to secondary surgery. Twenty patients had complete resection with the following distribution of histological types: 4 embryonal carcinoma, 9 mature teratoma and 7 fibrous tissue. Eighteen of these patients remain free of disease.

The DATECA Project was started in January 1976 and includes all patients with testicular cancer in Denmark. During the first 6 years, 1246 patients entered the joint protocol for histology, staging, management, and clinical use of tumor markers. Only 746 DATECA patients fulfilled the claims for being ideally monitored with preoperative as well as postoperative serologic marker determinations.

A method for the classification and quantification of lymphoma cells in non-Hodgkin lymphomas is described. Lymphoma-cell types were defined and used in differential counts of haematoxylin and eosine stained paraffin-embedded sections. The following cell types were distinguished: small lymphoid cells (small lymphocytes and small plasma cells), medium-sized lymphoid cells (round, cleaved and cerebriform lymphocytes, and medium-sized plasma cells), and large lymphoid cells (lymphoblastic, round triple-nucleolated, and pleomorphic types).

We monitored cardiovascular and renal function in conscious dogs with surgically denervated hearts during two experimental procedures: 1) inflation of a balloon in the left atrium and 2) intravascular volume expansion. The results obtained were compared with results from identical experiments on sham-operated control dogs. Left atrial balloon inflation in the sham-operated dogs produced an increase in left atrial pressure, heart rate, urine flow, and sodium excretion; central venous pressure decreased.

We measured hemodynamics and renal function in conscious dogs while partially obstructing blood flow at various sites within the thorax. Inflation of a balloon in the left atrium increased left atrial pressure (LAP) by 9 mmHg and caused a parallel increase in pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP); heart rate, arterial pressure, and total peripheral resistance increased; stroke volume and right atrial pressure decreased; and cardiac output remained unchanged. The increase in LAP was accompanied by a fourfold increase in urine flow and a threefold increase in sodium excretion.

To study central and peripheral mechanisms that regulate the level of circulating renin during activation of the carotid sinus baroreflex, both carotid sinuses were isolated and perfused at constant flow in chloralase-anesthetized dogs. Sinus pressure was controlled by an adjustable reservoir while systemic pressure was stabilized using an external chamber. Arterial renin activity, measured by radioimmunoassay, was increased during sinus hypotension only if systemic pressure was held constant.
