During development, amniote vertebrate embryos transform from a flat sheet into a three-dimensional cylindrical form through ventral folding of the lateral sides of the sheet (the lateral plate [LP]) and their fusion in the ventral midline. Using a chick embryo slice system, we find that the flat stage is actually a poised balance of opposing dorsal and ventral elastic bending tensions. An intact extracellular matrix (ECM) is required for generating tension, as localized digestion of ECM dissipates tension, while removal of endoderm or ectoderm layers has no significant effect.

Purpose: Toxicities after organ sparing myeloablative total marrow irradiation (TMI) conditioning regimens have not been well characterized. The purpose of this study is to report pulmonary, renal, thyroid, and cataract toxicities from a prospective trial monitoring patients up to 8 years after TMI.
Methods And Materials: A total of 142 patients with primarily multiple myeloma or acute leukemia undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation were evaluated.
Post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) encompasses a broad category of lymphoid and plasmacytic proliferations that occur following solid organ and/or allogeneic stem cell transplantation. PTLD manifests in the setting of chronic immunosuppression and is thought to be associated with the Epstein Barr Virus, although Epstein Barr Virus infection or reactivation is not required for the process to occur. Pathologic correlation is necessary for diagnosis with B-cell lymphocytes the most commonly isolated cellular etiology.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess treatment and other factors impacting survival in cervical high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma (HGNEC).
Methods/materials: We identified patients with cervical HGNECs diagnosed during 1988 to 2012 in the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results database. We determined overall survival by International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stages and by local treatment modalities, that is, radical surgery versus external beam radiation treatment (EBRT) plus brachytherapy using Kaplan-Meier analysis with log-rank test.
Purpose: There are limited long-term data on patients treated with image guided intensity modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT) for prostate cancer recurrence or high-risk disease features after radical prostatectomy. We report single-institution results for patients treated with IG-IMRT and identify variables associated with outcome.
Methods And Materials: This is a retrospective chart review consisting of 313 consecutive patients who were treated with adjuvant or salvage IG-IMRT from 2004 to 2013.
Objective: The primary objective of this real-world study was to describe the response to fampridine and changes of gait parameters in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients' walking disability (Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS): 4-7) after treatment with fampridine for 2 weeks as recommended by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and compare it with the overall physician's judgement.
Methods: A total of 211 adult MS patients were analyzed using a multimodal gait assessment including the timed 25-foot walk test (T25FW), 2-minute walking test (2-MWT), 12-item Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale (MSWS-12), the GAITRite electronic walkway system, and the patients' clinical global impression (CGI). Multimodal gait assessment was compared with the clinician's impression of overall improvement after 2 weeks.

Methods And Materials: Ten patients (5 men and 5 women) with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer who received definitive stereotactic body radiation therapy treatments were retrospectively selected. For each patient, two 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) plans using 6- and 10-MV photons, respectively; a helical tomotherapy (HT) plan; and 2 volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans using 1 and 2 arcs, respectively, were generated.
Current conditioning regimens provide insufficient disease control in relapsed/refractory acute leukemia patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with active disease. Intensification of chemotherapy and/or total body irradiation (TBI) is not feasible because of excessive toxicity. Total marrow and lymphoid irradiation (TMLI) allows for precise delivery and increased intensity treatment via sculpting radiation to sites with high disease burden or high risk for disease involvement, while sparing normal tissue.
