This prospective, randomised pilot study was designed to evaluate safety, feasibility and efficacy of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) in the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced anaemia in children with solid tumours. 20 children (age 4-18 years) undergoing cyclic combination chemotherapy were randomised either to a control group or to receive rhEPO at a dose of 150 U/kg/dose subcutaneously three times/week for a minimum of 12 weeks or three chemotherapy cycles. Of 15 evaluable patients, 8 were randomised to the rhEPO group and 7 to the control group.

We examined in vivo spontaneous and prednisolone-induced apoptosis in peripheral blood samples of 23 children with ALL by flow cytometric and morphologic methods. There was no significant spontaneous apoptosis before the therapy. Six hours after prednisolone therapy, increased apoptosis was found in 19 of 23 cases.

Sensitivity of leukemic blasts to steroid therapy is one of the prognostic factors in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children. We examined the number of steroid receptors and the increase in the apoptotic index in peripheral blast cells after administration of prednisolone monotherapy in 21 children with ALL. A new diagnostic method was established based on determination of the apoptotic index in peripheral blood lymphoblasts to evaluate the steroid sensitivity of leukemic cells during the first day of therapy.

Dysfunction of NADPH oxidase results in chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a syndrome characterized by severe bacterial and fungal infections. Growth and magnetite formation in Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense MSR-1 were found close to the maximum at an extracellular iron concentration of 15-20 microM. While many studies have sought prognostic factors of malignant melanoma using multivariate survival models, the interaction between predictors has been much less studied. We have studied data from 1,560 patients with stage I melanoma collected at the Cancer Registry of the Canton of Zurich over the period 1980-1990 and explored interactions between predictors by identifying two separate multivariate Cox models for men and women and investigating two-way interactions between predictors in each model. Considerable differences between models for man and women were observed.

The authors used a cell-surface-marker analysis by flow cytometry for immunophenotyping of pediatric leukemia from 1993. Results of their first one-hundred cases were summarized. They examined 68 bone-marrow samples from 58 patients affected by leukemia, and diagnosed 19 acute myeloid leukemia (32%), 5 T-cell acute lymphoid leukemia (8%), 32 B-cell acute lymphoid leukemia (54%) and 2 biphenotypic leukemia (5%).

The use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) or granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in order to abrogate chemotherapy-induced neutropenia has become a routine part of many cancer treatment regimes. However, there are still very few data available about possible complications related to repeated or prolonged use of these agents in patients with malignant solid tumors. The European Childhood Leukaemia - Lymphoma Incidence Study (ECLIS) is designed to address concerns about a possible increase in the risk of cancer in Europe following the nuclear accident in Chernobyle in 1986. This paper reports results of surveillance of childhood leukaemia in cancer registry populations from 1980 up to the end of 1991. There was a slight increase in the incidence of childhood leukaemia in Europe during this period, but the overall geographical pattern of change bears no relation to estimated exposure to radiation resulting from the accident.

Background: Many studies have been performed to identify prognostic factors of malignant melanoma using multivariate regression models. In these models, it is generally assumed that quantitative predictors such as age or tumor thickness enter linearly into the model, or they are categorized.

A population-based cancer registry for childhood leukemia was started in Hungary in 1971. Data processing and analysis have been done at the Second Department of Pediatrics, Semmelweis University Medical School in Budapest, which is the main center for the treatment of childhood malignancies in Hungary.
