A comparison of inhaled fluticasone and oral prednisone for children with severe acute asthma.

Background: Inhaled corticosteroids are effective in the treatment of children with asthma. It is uncertain how inhaled corticosteroids compare with oral corticosteroids in the management of severe acute disease.

Methods: We performed a double-blind, randomized trial involving 100 children five years of age or older who had severe acute asthma (indicated by a forced expiratory volume in one second [FEV1] that was less than 60 percent of the predicted value) and in whom the results could be evaluated.

Comparison of albuterol delivered by a metered dose inhaler with spacer versus a nebulizer in children with mild acute asthma.

Objective: In children with mild acute asthma, to compare treatment with a single dose of albuterol delivered by a metered dose inhaler (MDI) with a spacer in either a weight-adjusted high dose or a standard low-dose regimen with delivery by a nebulizer.

The expression of growth factors is considered as an important diagnostic and prognostic feature in tumor pathology. We investigated the value of the immunohistochemical EGF-receptor expression (EGF-R) in 30 squamous cell carcinomas of the uterine cervix, treated by radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy according to the Wertheim-Meigs-Okabayashi technique. We have shown previously that the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor is phosphorylated at Ser-1002 and that this phosphorylation is associated with desensitization of the EGF receptor. Ser-1002 is followed immediately by Pro-1003, a residue that may promote the adoption of a specific conformation at this site or severe as a recognition element for the interaction of the EGF receptor with other proteins. To examine these possibilities, we have mutated Pro-1003 of the EGF receptor to a Gly residue and have analyzed the effect of this mutation on EGF-stimulated signaling.

Efficacy of albuterol administered by nebulizer versus spacer device in children with acute asthma.

To facilitate studies that may elucidate these functions, we have efficiently generated large quantities of GAP-43 by introducing a GAP-43 cDNA into a bacterial expression system driven by T7-RNA polymerase. Two constructs were expressed in this system: one (pT7Ava-GAP) produces a fusion protein in which the first 16 amino acids of GAP-43 are replaced by 11 amino acids of the phage T7 capsid protein; the other (pT7FL-GAP) produces full length GAP-43.

Cordocentesis under ultrasound guidance, or percutaneous umbilical blood sampling, was first reported in 1983 by Daffos et al. Since then the method has gained importance in prenatal diagnosis. Clinical-physiologic correlations in acute asthma of childhood.
