To assess a patient empowerment program (PEP) for children/adolescents with primary immunodeficiency (PID) on IgG replacement therapy regarding quality of life (QoL) in patients and proxy. Health-related QoL was assessed using KIDSCREEN-27 and DISABKIDS-37 before and 6 months after PID-PEP kids in 19 children/adolescents and their parents. The following three dimensions of the KIDSCREEN-27 significantly increased in children/adolescents after PID-PEP kids as compared with baseline: Psychological Well-Being, Parents & Autonomy and School Environment.

Introduction: Primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases characterized by increased susceptibility to infections and a reduced quality of life (QoL). The influence of a patient empowerment programme for PID (PID-PEP) on general and health-related QoL was assessed in the present study.

Intestinal antigen uptake is enhanced in inflammatory bowel disease. We analyzed transcellular transport routes of antigens in different compartments of normal enterocytes and atypical intestinal epithelial cells called "rapid antigen uptake into the cytosol enterocytes" (RACE cells). These cells constitute a recently described population of enterocyte-derived cells, which are increased in inflammatory bowel disease.

Metallothioneins (MTs) are zinc-binding proteins whose overexpression may lead to sequestration of zinc ions and consequently to functional inactivation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential role of MTs in the carcinogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) as well as possible effects on p53 function. The monoclonal antibodies E9 (anti-MT), DO-7, and 1801 (anti-p53) and the polyclonal antibody CM-1 (anti-p53) were used to stain formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded colon specimens obtained from 14 patients with UC-associated colorectal carcinoma (CAC), 13 with high-grade dysplasia (HGD), 10 with low-grade dysplasia (LGD), and 30 with UC without dysplasia or carcinoma.

Several reports have implicated reactive oxygen and nitrogen metabolites (RONS) in the initiation and/or progression of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). We have investigated the role of three key RONS-metabolizing enzymes (inducible nitric oxide synthase [iNOS], superoxide dismutase [SOD], nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate [NADPH] oxidase) in a murine model of IBD. Background: This study was a retrospective review of 19 patients with popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) treated in a 20-year interval.

Methods: The Heidelberg classification of PAES was used, which differentiates three categories of entrapment: in type I the popliteal artery has an atypical course, in type II the muscular insertion is atypical, and in type III both conditions are present. Besides decompression of the popliteal artery the commonest operative reconstruction used was resection of the atherosclerotic part of the artery and autologous vein interposition grafting (n = 12).

Adhesion of circulating cells to vascular endothelium occurs in the early phase of inflammation, and is mediated by specific cell adhesion molecules. Many such adhesion molecules are increased in inflamed regions of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) but there is limited knowledge of their expression in the uninvolved gut, adjacent to inflammation. We investigated immunohistochemically the expression of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) on resected specimens taken at a distance of 2-4 cm from the inflamed area and without histological signs of inflammation.
