This paper discusses the use of recyclable functionalized nanoparticles for an improved downstream processing of recombinant products. The Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus megaterium was used to secrete recombinant protein A fused to a histidine tag into the culture supernatant in shaker flasks. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane-coupled-nitrilotriacetic-acid groups (GNTA-SPION) were synthesized and added directly to the growing culture.

Our high-contrast BEC interferometer realizes tens of milliseconds of free fall in a volume as little as a one centimeter cube and paves the way for measurements with sub-μGal accuracies in miniaturized, robust devices.

Objective: To describe tissue interface pressure, time spent above critical pressure levels and the effect on skin integrity at seven anatomical locations.
Design, Setting, Patients: Descriptive, longitudinal study in critically ill mechanically ventilated adults, from Surgical Trauma ICU-STICU; Medical Respiratory ICU-MRICU; Neuroscience ICU-NSICU in a Mid-Atlantic urban university medical centre. Subjects were enroled in the study within 24hours of intubation.
Iron redox reactions play an important role in carbon remineralization, supporting large microbial communities in iron-rich terrestrial and aquatic sediments. Stratified water columns with comparably low iron concentrations are globally widespread, but microbial iron cycling in these systems has largely been ignored. We found evidence for unexpectedly high iron turnover rates in the low (1-2 µmol·l ) iron waters of Lake Cadagno.

Design: The Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study (EHLS), a longitudinal, population-based study of aging in the Beaver Dam, Wisconsin community. Baseline examinations were conducted in 1993 and follow-up examinations have been conducted every 5 years.

Unlabelled: While there is a plethora of evidence for the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), studies on change factors of the therapeutic process that account for this success are scarce. In the present study, 155 participants with primary OCD were investigated during CBT inpatient treatment. The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale-SR served as a measure of symptom severity.

Mitochondria play a crucial role in I/R injury through cytochrome c-dependent apoptosis activation. We tested the hypothesis that 17β-estradiol (E2) as well as a specific ERβ agonist improve cardiac recovery through estrogen receptor (ER)β-mediated mechanisms by reducing mitochondria-induced apoptosis and preserving mitochondrial integrity.

Relative to matched controls, schizophrenia patients show (1) a global and regional reduction in the integrity of the brain's white matter (WM), assessed using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) fractional anisotropy (FA), and (2) accelerated age-related decline in FA values. In the largest mega-analysis to date, we tested if differences in the trajectories of WM tract development influenced patient-control differences in FA.

Limited information is available regarding risk factors and their relationships to outcomes in this population. The comparative frequency and predictive utility of empirically supported risk factors for general delinquency were examined using data from the Pathways to Desistance study.

The study evaluated the actual use of iPads in the classroom, skills and simulation laboratories, and clinical settings and examined the satisfaction of students and faculty with the iPad platform. The study findings provide guidance for a phased-in iPad implementation for prelicensure nursing programs.

Methods: Growth curve and multilevel mixed-effects models are used to examine change through age 18 in a sample of 1,354 serious adolescent offenders participating in the Pathways to Desistance Study.
Results: Three primary findings emerge: 1) Compared to the baseline assessment, overall risk/need scores decrease over time.
The multiplexing capabilities of isobaric mass tag-based protein quantification, such as Tandem Mass Tags or Isobaric Tag for Relative and Absolute Quantitation have dramatically increased the scope of mass spectrometry-based proteomics studies. Not only does the technology allow for the simultaneous quantification of multiple samples in a single MS injection, but its seamless compatibility with extensive sample prefractionation methods allows for comprehensive studies of complex proteomes. However, reporter ion-based quantification has often been criticized for limited quantification accuracy due to interference from coeluting peptides and peptide fragments.

To assess the effect of GRACE at a Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center (VAMC), veterans aged 65 and older from Marion County, Indiana, with PCPs from four of five VAMC clinics who were not on hospice or dialysis were enrolled in GRACE after discharge home from an acute hospitalization. After an initial home-based transition visit to GRACE enrollees, the GRACE team returned to conduct a geriatric assessment.

To determine the in situ amount of CH4 per unit mass of pore water in sediments, we developed and validated a new method that combines techniques developed for noble-gas analysis in pore waters with a standard headspace technique to quantify the CH4 present in the pore space in dissolved and gaseous form. The method was tested at two sites: Lake Lungern, where CH4 concentrations were close to saturation; and Lake Rotsee, where CH4 concentrations are known to exceed saturation and where CH4 bubble formation and gas ebullition are commonly observed.

Recent data have shown that MPL function is essential for CALR mutant-driven MPN. However, the exact role and the mechanisms of action of CALR mutants have not been fully elucidated.

This study investigates the contextual or macroergonomic factors present in the health-related work performed by patients. We performed a secondary content analysis of findings from three studies of the work of chronically ill patients and their informal caregivers.

Interface pressure may vary with level of backrest elevation and anatomical location (eg, sacrum, heels).
Objective: To describe backrest elevation and anatomical location and intensity of skin pressure across the body in patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
Background: Sensory impairments increase with age and the majority of older people will experience a sensory impairment if they live long enough. However, the relationships of hearing, visual, and olfactory impairments with mortality are not well understood.
Methods: Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study participants (n = 2,418) aged 53-97 years (mean = 69 years) were examined in 1998-2000 and hearing, visual acuity, and olfaction were measured.
Aims: Research demonstrates that migrants are more vulnerable to poor mental health than general populations, but population-based studies with distinct migrant groups are scarce. We aim to (1) assess the prevalence of mental health symptoms in Russian, Somali and Kurdish origin migrants in Finland; (2) compare the prevalence of mental health symptoms in these migrant groups to the Finnish population; (3) determine which socio-demographic factors are associated with mental health symptoms.
Methods: We used data from the Finnish Migrant Health and Wellbeing Study and Health 2011 Survey.
