Purpose: Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (AYA-CS) face a long working life after treatment, yet factors related to a successful return to work remain largely unexplored. We therefore aimed to investigate the use of occupational adjustments and their impact on work ability upon return to work.

Pluvial floods are increasingly threatening urban environments worldwide due to human-induced climate change. High-resolution, state-of-the-art pluvial flood models are urgently needed to inform climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction measures but are generally not empirically tested because of the rarity of local high-intensity precipitation events and the lack of monitoring capabilities. Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) collected by professionals, non-professionals and citizens and made available on the internet can be used to monitor the dynamic extent of a pluvial flood during and after an extreme rain event but is sometimes considered to be unreliable.

Risk management has reduced vulnerability to floods and droughts globally, yet their impacts are still increasing. An improved understanding of the causes of changing impacts is therefore needed, but has been hampered by a lack of empirical data. On the basis of a global dataset of 45 pairs of events that occurred within the same area, we show that risk management generally reduces the impacts of floods and droughts but faces difficulties in reducing the impacts of unprecedented events of a magnitude not previously experienced.

The input of plant leaf litter has been assumed to be the most important resource for soil organisms of forest ecosystems, but there is increasing evidence that root-derived resources may be more important. By trenching roots of trees in deciduous and coniferous forests, we cut-off the input of root-derived resources and investigated the response of microorganisms using substrate-induced respiration and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. After one and three years, root trenching strongly decreased microbial biomass and concentrations of PLFAs by about 20%, but the microbial community structure was little affected and the effects were similar in deciduous and coniferous forests.

Reversible polymeric networks can show self-healing properties due to their ability to reassemble after application of stress and fracture, but typically the relation between equilibrium molecular dynamics and self-healing kinetics has been difficult to disentangle. Here we present a well-characterized, self-assembled bulk network based on supramolecular assemblies, that allows a clear distinction between chain dynamics and network relaxation. Small angle x-ray scattering and rheological measurements provide evidence for a structurally well-defined, dense network of interconnected aggregates giving mechanical strength to the material.

Background: The authors investigated whether cancer patients who have comorbid mental health disorders (MD) are at greater risk of early retirement compared with those who do not have MD.

We present an algorithm which allows us to identify all possible stable states of the cantilever oscillation of an AFM operated in the intermittent contact mode within the harmonic approximation. The oscillatory states are qualified as quasi-free, net-attractive and net-repulsive solutions. Objectives: The aim of this study was to understand the quantity and quality of psychosocial services offered at counselling centres for outpatients with cancer in Saxony, a federal state of Germany.

Methods: Structured interviews with employees on site at the counselling centres in Saxony (N=30) and an analysis of their yearly reports were undertaken.

Results: The majority of the counselling centres (N=25) was situated at local health departments.

We study the effects of interfacial polarization in and upon a self-assembled ion conductor based on a lamellar block copolymer and a lithium salt. Impedance spectroscopy combined with orientation experiments enable a quantitative analysis of ionic polarization and a direct demonstration of its aligning effect on the interfaces. The time constant of the ionic polarization is larger as expected from Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars theory and attributed to diffusion effects.

We present polarization and transient current experiments that allow an independent determination of the charge carrier density and the mobility of ions in polymer electrolytes at low charge carrier density. The method relies on a complete depletion of ions in the bulk electrolyte achieved by applying high voltages. Based on a qualitative model for the charge dynamics in this nonlinear regime, the method is exemplarily applied to a system of polymethylmethacrylate doped with small amounts of a lithium salt.
