Background: During recent decades, studies of various cancer-related genes has led to a growing understanding of molecular mechanisms of gastrointestinal cancer resulting in a genetic progression model. Nevertheless, with a few exceptions, our knowledge of participating genes has not been exploited for gene therapeutic approaches. Therefore, we monitored the promoter activity of genes shown to be significantly expressed in gastrointestinal tumors to select optimally active promoters for recombinant DNA constructs.

We have previously shown that interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) inhibits proliferation of Ba/F3 cells by interfering with the action of the mitogen interleukin-3 (IL-3) [Cell Signal 11 (1999) 769]. Here, we have characterised the role of protein kinase R (PKR), an IFN-alpha-inducible enzyme, in the mediation of IL-3-antagonistic IFN-alpha effects. This article reviews the current understanding of IFN-gamma ligand, receptor, signal transduction, and cellular effects with a focus on macrophage responses and to a lesser extent, responses from other cell types that influence macrophage function during infection. The current model for IFN-gamma signal transduction is discussed, as well as signal regulation and factors conferring signal specificity.

Effects and generalizability of communally oriented HIV-AIDS prevention versus general health promotion groups for single, inner-city women in urban clinics.

A primary prevention, behavioral intervention designed to reduce HIV risk behavior was tested in a randomized, controlled trial with single, inner-city women. H-rev107-1 is a growth inhibitory RAS target gene capable of suppressing anchorage independent growth in vitro and in vivo. Using a tumour tissue array with 241 matched tumour and normal tissue cDNA pools, we found down-regulation of H-REV107-1 in 7 out of 14 ovary-derived cDNAs. RT-PCR analysis and immunohistochemical investigation confirmed expression of H-REV107-1 in normal ovarian epithelial cells but down-regulation in high grade ovarian carcinomas.

Background: In evolving myocardial infarction, assessment of the sum of early resolution of ST-segment elevation (sumSTR) has become an established method to predict outcome. We have found previously that mortality is predicted more accurately by the existing ST-segment deviation in the single electrocardiograph (ECG) lead with maximum deviation (maxSTE) 90 min after start of thrombolysis. Background: Hepatitis A vaccine is safe and achieves good seroconversion rates in liver (LTX) and renal (RTX) transplant recipients.

Methods: A study was performed to determine the anti-hepatitis A virus (HAV) antibody decline in LTX and RTX patients, and in healthy controls who have been immunized with two doses of hepatitis A vaccine.

Results: LTX and RTX patients had a satisfactory seroconversion rate after complete immunisation.

Proximal and Distal Predictors of AIDS Risk Behaviors among Inner-city African American and European American Women.

AIDS risk behavior and attitudes towards safer sex were studied in a sample of 666 African American and 626 European American women. Condom use, AIDS-related knowledge, risk perception, self-efficacy beliefs, attitudes and perceived partner attitudes, and an assertive coping style were analyzed with regard to mean differences and predictive power in both ethnic groups. Compared to European American women, African American women had less knowledge and lower self-efficacy beliefs towards safer sex behavior, but they perceived themselves to be at more risk and reported greater condom use.

Attitudes and expectations regarding future work stress, work satisfaction, coping strategies, gender specific problems, effects on private life and future quality of life were studied. As expected, students in the upper term were able to judge their professional and private future more realistically.
