Objectives: Identifying cardiac surgical patients at risk of requiring red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is crucial for optimizing their outcome. We critically appraised prognostic models preoperatively predicting perioperative exposure to RBC transfusion in adult cardiac surgery and summarized model performance.
Methods: Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

The number of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) undergoing ambulatory surgery is increasing. Deciding whether a CHD patient is suitable for an ambulatory procedure is still challenging. Several factors must be considered, including the type of planned procedure, the complexity of the underlying pathology, the American Society of Anesthesiologists' Physical Status classification of the patient, and other patient-specific factors, including comorbidity, chronic complications of CHD, medication, coagulation disorders, and issues related to the presence of a pacemaker (PM) or cardioverter-defibrillator.

Design: A qualitative in-depth semi-structured interview study was performed between September 2018 and January 2019 with both partners of 13 Dutch heterosexual couples where the male partner suffered from infertility and who conceived a child with the help of a sperm donor. Interview questions were based on literature and clinical experiences of experts in the field of donor conception. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis.
Research Question: Are unmet needs for psychosocial counselling, peer support and friends/family support in parents directly and/or indirectly related to the mental health of parents and their donor-children?
Design: A cross-sectional sample of 214 parents participated in this quantitative study via an online questionnaire. The sample comprised mothers and fathers in a heterosexual relationship (n = 85), mothers in a lesbian relationship (n = 67) and single mothers (n = 62). Parents were recruited via three Dutch fertility clinics and four network organizations.
Background: Numerous publications show that electronic medical records (EMRs) may make an important contribution to increasing the quality of care. There are indications that particularly the medical specialist plays an important role in the use of EMRs in hospitals.
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine how, and by which aspects, the relationship between EMR use and the quality of care in hospitals is influenced according to medical specialists.
Many Intensive Care (ICU) survivors experience long lasting impairments in physical and psychological health as well as social functioning. The objective of our study was to evaluate these effects up to 10 years after ICU discharge. We performed a long-term prospective cohort study in patients admitted for longer than 48 h in a medical-surgical ICU.

Design: This quantitative study included women in a heterosexual relationship (n = 19), women in a lesbian relationship (n = 25) and single women (n = 51) who opted for DST. Women were included if they had passed the DST intake procedure at a Dutch fertility clinic, were not pregnant and had no previous donor-child. Unmet needs were measured by a self-developed questionnaire based on specific topics identified in a previous qualitative study with added items from experts in the field of DST.
Background: In two recent randomized controlled trials, withholding parenteral nutrition early in critical illness improved outcome as compared to early up-to-calculated-target nutrition, which may be explained by beneficial effects of fasting. Outside critical care, fasting-mimicking diets were found to maintain fasting-induced benefits while avoiding prolonged starvation. It is unclear whether critically ill patients can develop a fasting response after a short-term nutrient interruption.

To date, little is known about which topics intended parents find relevant to discuss in psychosocial counselling.

AIM: To analyse which variables predict the transition of individuals with severe mental illness from supported housing within the Dutch community housing programs (CHP) to more independent ways of living.
METHOD: Data of 1569 participants were analysed using Cox regression analysis.

Objectives: We aimed at exploring the wishes of Dutch donor-conceived offspring for parental support, peer support and counseling and sought to contribute to the improvement of health care for all parties involved with assisted reproductive technologies.
Methods: We held semi-structured in-depth interviews with 24 donor-conceived offspring (M = 26.9, range 17-41) born within father-mother, two-mother and single mother families.
Objective: Determine whether the early detection of parenting problems and developmental problems in young children improves with the help of a validated structured interview.
Design: Non-randomized controlled trial held from December 2006 until January 2008.
Setting: Preventive child health care services in the Netherlands.
Objectives: To investigate the relation between perceived waiting times and patients' overall ratings of accident and emergency departments (A&Es) and to explore which patients view waiting times as problematic.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was held in 21 A&Es in the Netherlands. From each A&E, a random sample of patients was investigated.
Objective: The early detection of parenting and developmental problems by preventive child health care (CHC) services in the Netherlands takes place almost exclusively at the well-baby clinic. This study assesses whether, compared to a visit to the well-baby clinic, a home visit improves early detection.
Methods: 4481 eligible 18-month-old children and their parents were randomized to either a visit to the well-baby clinic or a home visit in the period from December 2006 to January 2008.
School-based health-promoting interventions show promising results in improving various health outcomes of adolescents. Unfortunately, much is still unknown about the relations between health behaviors and school performances, while improving these would give schools a stronger incentive to invest in health promotion. This paper presents the associations of several health behaviors with school performances and studies the mediating effects of psychosocial problems.

However, optimal follow-up periods are not defined and data on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) before ICU admission as well as those beyond 2 years follow-up are limited. The aim of our study was to assess the impact of ICU stay up to 5 years after ICU discharge.

In the literature, the school-based whole school approach is stated be the most promising way to promote healthy behavior. Herein, interventions are evidence based and integrated into the curriculum, while embedded in complementary healthy school policies and environment.

We compare patients' experiences in Accident & Emergency departments (A&E) in England and the Netherlands and discuss the usefulness of this comparison.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among patients attending A&Es aged 18 years and older.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to elucidate the purpose, content, and organization of nurse-led clinics for patients with chronic diseases and to explore whether there are differences in the content and context of the nurse-led clinics and attention for the home situation between a transmural and a hospital setting.
Settings: Transmural setting by which nurses work in both primary and secondary care and hospital setting where nurses are employed by a local hospital. Within the transmural setting, 4 nurse-led clinics were studied: heart failure, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson disease, and multiple sclerosis.
Background: Recent studies show several health-related behaviors to cluster in adolescents. This has important implications for public health. Interrelated behaviors have been shown to be most effectively targeted by multimodal interventions addressing wider-ranging improvements in lifestyle instead of via separate interventions targeting individual behaviors.

The Consumer Quality Index for the Accident and Emergency department (CQI A&E), a questionnaire to assess the quality of care as experienced by patients, was investigated. The internal consistency, construct validity and discriminative capacity of the questionnaire were examined.

However, more and more nursing homes offer integrated dental care, where a dentist works on a structural basis in facilities within the home.
Methods: To evaluate the costs and effects of integrated versus incidental care, we studied the oral status and treatment needs in two nursing homes in the same city with 175 and 120 residents an average age of 81.
Background: In several countries centres for the integrated delivery of services to the parent and child have been established. In the Netherlands family health care service centres, called Parent and Child Centres (PCCs) involve multidisciplinary teams. Here doctors, nurses, midwives, maternity help professionals and educationists are integrated into multidisciplinary teams in neighbourhood-based centres.
