Background: Some lesions on the ocular surface bear the danger of false diagnosis and, therefore, incorrect therapy.
Case: Our patient suffered from a therapy refractory episcleritis-like disease in both eyes. The conjunctiva and episclera in the temporal inferior quadrant were locally reddened but we could not make a clear diagnosis even after ultrasonic investigation.
Aims: To define the effect of the neuropeptides substance P, calcitonin gene related peptide, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, neuropeptide Y, and secretoneurin on the proliferation of human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells.
Methods: ARPE-19 cells were used. The cells were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium.
