Introduction: In response to the evolution of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the admission protocol for the temporary COVID-19 hospital in Mexico City has been updated to hospitalize patients preemptively with an oxygen saturation (SpO) of >90%.

Methods: This prospective, observational, single-center study compared the progression and outcomes of patients who were preemptively hospitalized those who were hospitalized based on an SpO ⩽90%. We recorded patient demographics, clinical characteristics, COVID-19 symptoms, and oxygen requirement at admission.

The consequences of bird mortality caused by collisions with wind turbines are increasingly receiving attention. So-called acceptable mortality limits of populations, that is, those that assume that 1%-5% of additional mortality and the potential biological removal (PBR), provide seemingly clear-cut methods for establishing the reduction in population viability.We examine how the application of these commonly used mortality limits could affect populations of the Common Starling, Black-tailed Godwit Marsh Harrier, Eurasian Spoonbill, White Stork, Common Tern, and White-tailed Eagle using stochastic density-independent and density-dependent Leslie matrix models.

Microwave assisted polycondensation for the synthesis of (partially) biobased polyazomethines in water (hydrothermal polymerization) was investigated for the first time in this study. Direct analysis of synthetic fibers under ambient conditions is highly desired to identify the polymer, the finishes applied and irregularities that may compromise its performance and value. In this paper, laser ablation electrospray ionization ion mobility time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LAESI-IMS-TOF-MS) was used for the analysis of synthetic polymers and fibers. The key to this analysis was the absorption of laser light by aliphatic and aromatic nitrogen functionalities in the polymers.

In the present study, we address the possibility of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)-time-of-flight MS analysis-induced chain fragmentation in poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPD-T) by considering two possible sources: (1) grinding-induced fragmentation resulting from the evaporation-grinding MALDI sample preparation method (E-G method) and (2) in-source/metastable fragmentation induced by the MALDI laser. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical study found, with a high probability, that obtaining MALDI spectra with the effective laser area as large as possible (the "fanned-out" setting) did not cause any chain fragmentation due to the E-G MALDI sample preparation method, even when three additional grinding steps were used. However, the effect of laser fluence was less clear.

Current knowledge of sewage sludge is reviewed, particular reference being made to the possible effect on the health of herds of cattle. The following measures should be urgently and seriously considered: more effective watching of sewage disposal; assessments on sewage disposals, related to the costs of alternatives; stricter checks on diffuse sources of pollution (refuse dumps, agriculture, etc.); development of long-term views to prevent the appearance of waste matter injurious to health and putting a stop to methods of production in which these wastes are released.

Extra iron (5 ppm) in a normal commercial milk replacer given from the end of the sixth week until the end of the sixteenth week of the fattening period influenced food conversion positively without a loss in meat quality. Even when the extra iron was given to the end of the fattening period there was no perceptible improvement of the haematological status of the calf, though liver iron concentration was increased. During all the experiments no stainable iron could be found in bone marrow smears.

The distribution of iron and copper in the liver and spleen of veal calves was determined in a group of calves fattened with a commercial milk replacer supplemented with 5 ppm iron and in a control group fed the unsupplemented milk replacer. No marked variations were detected in the distribution of iron and copper. A liver biopsy is therefore likely to be a representative sample of the whole liver with respect to iron and copper concentration.

Tick-borne fever in goats caused by Ehrlichia (Cytoecetes) phagocytophila was characterised by high fever, dullness, anorexia, tachycardia and a slight to moderate inhibition of rumen motility. The animals developed a gradual decline in the total number of circulating white blood cells. There was a decrease in lymphocytes over a short period, followed by an increase.

Zinc concentrations were determined in skimmed milk and whole milk samples from healthy and mastitic cows. During spontaneous and induced mastitis, a marked decrease of Zn concentration in skimmed milk from the mastitic quarters was observed. Seemingly, there are 2 mechanisms involved in the lowering of Zn concentration in skimmed milk from mastitic quarters: a decline in Zn probably as a consequence of decreases in plasma Zn concentrations and an abrupt redistribution of Zn in the inflamed quarters.

The influence of bacterial lipopolysaccharides on plasma Zn and Fe concentrations and the endotoxin-neutralizing capacity of polymyxin B was studied in 3 dairy cows. Also, the feasibility of using plasma Zn and Fe concentrations as measurements for evaluating the influence of endotoxin-neutralizing agents in Escherichia coli endotoxin-induced mastitis was studied. A positive relationship was ascertained between the dose of endotoxin given intramammarily (IMM) and the effect on mean values of plasma Zn and Fe concentrations.
