Use of collagen shields for treatment of chronic bilateral corneal ulcers in a pet rabbit.

A four-year-old, 1·3-kg entire male Holland Lop pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented with a two-day history of bilateral epiphora and blepharospasm. Fluorescein staining revealed bilateral medio-ventral corneal ulceration. Initial topical treatment included ophthalmic broad-spectrum antibiotics and artificial tear solutions.

Preliminary studies on the etiology of keratoconjunctivitis in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) calves in Alaska.

Keratoconjunctivitis outbreaks occur each summer in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) herds in western Alaska, USA. This condition has not been well characterized nor has a definitive primary etiologic agent been identified. We evaluated the eyes of 660 calves near Nome, Alaska, between 29 June and 14 July 2005.

Ophthalmologic and oculopathologic findings in red-tailed hawks and Cooper's hawks with naturally acquired West Nile virus infection.

Objective: To assess ophthalmologic features and ocular lesions in red-tailed hawks and Cooper's hawks naturally infected with West Nile virus (WNV).

Design: Original study.

Animals: 13 hawks.

Anaerobic orbital abscess/cellulitis in a Yorkshire Terrier dog.

A retrobulbar abscess/cellulitis occurred in a Yorkshire Terrier dog. The clinical signs were exophthalmos, prolapsed nictitating membrane and purulent ocular discharge. Ultrasonography showed a marked soft tissue swelling of the retrobulbar tissues as well as echogenic parallel lines between the globe and the medial orbital rim.

Combined cycloablation and gonioimplantation for treatment of glaucoma in dogs: 18 cases (1992-1998).

Objective: To evaluate a combined cycloablative and gonioimplantation technique for treatment of glaucoma in dogs.

Design: Retrospective study.

Animals: 18 adult dogs with glaucoma.

Effect of intracameral administration of carbachol on the postoperative increase in intraocular pressure in dogs undergoing cataract extraction.

Objective: To determine whether intracameral injection of carbachol at the completion of phacoemulsification in dogs would prevent the increase in intraocular pressure (i.o.p) that can develop during the first 24 hours after surgery.

Tear copper and its association with liver copper concentrations in six adult ewes.

Tear and liver copper concentrations from 6 clinically healthy adult mixed-breed ewes were measured by Atomic Absorption Electrothermal Atomization (graphite furnace) Spectrometry and Flame Absorption Spectrometry, respectively, 7 times over 227 d to determine if their tears contained copper and if so, whether tear copper concentrations could reliably predict liver copper concentrations. To produce changes in liver copper concentration, the diet was supplemented with copper at concentrations that increased from 23 mg to 45 mg Cu/kg feed/day/sheep during the study. This regimen raised liver copper for all sheep to potentially toxic hepatic tissue concentration of greater than 500 mg/kg dry (DM) matter (tissue).

Choroidal melanoma in a dog.

B-scan ultrasonography of the right eye of a 6-year-old sexually intact female mixed-breed dog revealed complete retinal detachment and a semiconical solid mass of tissue that projected from the area of the optic disc into the vitreal space subretinally. Microscopic examination of an ultrasound guided fine-needle aspirate of the mass revealed a moderate number of mildly pleomorphic melanocytes. Histologic examination of the excised globe revealed a large, heavily pigmented intraocular neoplastic mass in the choroid around the optic nerve, bulging into the subretinal space.

Pseudallescheria boydii keratomycosis in a horse.

The fungal organism Pseudallescheria boydii was isolated from the cornea of a Quarter Horse with ulcerative keratitis. Despite aggressive hourly medication through a subpalpebral lavage system, with drugs including miconazole and natamycin, the cornea developed a stromal abscess. Orbital exenteration was performed after 3 weeks.

Remission of orbital sarcoma in a dog, using doxorubicin therapy.

A 7-year-old female mixed-breed dog with an undifferentiated sarcoma of the orbit was treated for 7 months with doxorubicin hydrochloride. Though remission was achieved, the dog died of acute heart failure.
