Background: Despite efforts to provide evidence-based care for people living with kidney disease, health care provider goals and priorities are often misaligned with those of individuals with lived experience of disease. Coupled with competing interests of time, resources, and an abundance of suitable guideline topics, identifying and prioritizing areas of focus for the Canadian nephrology community with a patient-oriented perspective is necessary and important. Similar priority-setting exercises have been undertaken to establish research priorities for kidney disease and to standardize outcomes for kidney disease research and clinical care; however, research priorities are distinct from priorities for guideline development.

This study resulted in a change of practice in our institution to shorter postbiopsy monitoring for outpatients as well as the development of a risk calculator to predict serious bleeding complications.
Objective: The primary objective of this study was to determine whether this shorter monitoring time is adequate in the outpatient setting.
Background: Abnormalities in cognitive function are almost universal in patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) and are associated with worse quality of life, impaired decision making, increased healthcare utilization and mortality. While cognitive impairment in the HD population is increasingly recognized, it is unclear how quickly it develops after starting HD.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of a cohort of low dialysis vintage HD patients (<12 months).
Background & Aims: The protozoa Giardia duodenalis is a major cause of gastrointestinal illness worldwide, but underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain obscure, partly due to the absence of adequate cellular models. We aimed at overcoming these limitations and recapitulating the authentic series of pathogenic events in the primary human duodenal tissue by using the human organoid system.

The relationship between parental bonding, trauma, and ASPD is well established, however, it remains unclear what types of trauma or which patterns of bonding are more associated with ASPD.

Design Setting Participants And Measurements: We performed a retrospective study of 617 consecutive adult patients who underwent kidney biopsy between 2012 and 2017 at a tertiary academic hospital in London, Canada. We assessed frequency and timing of minor (not requiring intervention) and major (requiring blood transfusion, surgery, or embolization) bleeds and developed a personalized risk calculator for these.

Anorexia nervosa (AN), a psychiatric disorder characterized by altered body image, food restriction and low body weight, is associated with low bone mineral density and increased fracture risk. Despite broadening the definition of AN in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5 edition, the prevalence of low bone mass remains high, suggesting we continue to capture individuals at high risk for bone loss. Many of the endocrine disturbances adaptive to the state of chronic starvation are thought to be causal in impaired skeletal integrity in females and males with AN.

Objective: To determine whether low-dose testosterone therapy is an effective endocrine-targeted therapy for AN.
Context: Accurate diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency is critical because there are risks associated with overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Data using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) free cortisol (FC) assays in states of high or low cortisol-binding globulin (CBG) levels, including cirrhosis, critical illness, and oral estrogen use, are needed.

Background: Despite their higher areal bone mineral density (aBMD), adolescents with obesity (OB) have an increase in fracture risk, particularly of the extremities, compared with normal-weight controls. Whereas bone parameters that increase fracture risk are well characterized in anorexia nervosa (AN), the other end of nutritional spectrum, these data are lacking in adolescents with obesity.
Objective: Our objective was to compare bone parameters in adolescent girls across the nutritional spectrum, to determine whether suboptimal bone adaptation to increased body weight may explain the increased fracture risk in OB.
Objective: Few bone mineral density (BMD) data are available in men with anorexia nervosa (AN), and none in those with atypical AN (ATYP) (AN psychological symptoms without low weight) or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) (restrictive eating without AN psychological symptoms). School mental health (SMH) programs have been shown to be effective in providing evidence-based interventions to underserved youth. However, limitations of SMH programs are that they can entail holiday breaks, typically do not operate through summer, and often require pulling students from class to receive therapy. Yet, the activity of the circulating IGF-system appears to be normal in overweight/obese subjects, as estimated by the ability of serum to activate the IGF-I receptor in vitro (bioactive IGF).
