Ceramides generated by the activity of the neutral sphingomyelinase 2 (nSMase2) play a pivotal role in stress responses in mammalian cells. Dysregulation of sphingolipid metabolism has been implicated in numerous inflammation-related pathologies. However, its influence on inflammatory cytokine-induced signaling is yet incompletely understood.

The accumulation of lipid droplets (LDs) and ceramides (Cer) is linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), regularly co-existing with type 2 diabetes and decreased immune function. Chronic inflammation and increased disease severity in viral infections are the hallmarks of the obesity-related immunopathology. The upregulation of neutral sphingomyelinase-2 (NSM2) has shown to be associated with the pathology of obesity in tissues.

Bacterial zoonotic pathogens are often the cause of diseases, sometimes with severe outcomes. They are mutually transferable between animals (both wild and domestic) and humans. The transmission paths are very variable and include oral intake via food, respiratory infection via droplets and aerosols, or infections via vectors such as tick bites or rodent contact.

As viruses are obligatory intracellular parasites, any step during their life cycle strictly depends on successful interaction with their particular host cells. In particular, their interaction with cellular membranes is of crucial importance for most steps in the viral replication cycle. Such interactions are initiated by uptake of viral particles and subsequent trafficking to intracellular compartments to access their replication compartments which provide a spatially confined environment concentrating viral and cellular components, and subsequently, employ cellular membranes for assembly and exit of viral progeny.

Background: Cervical patterning abnormalities are rare in the general population, but one variant, cervical ribs, is particularly common in deceased fetuses and neonates. The discrepancy between the incidence in the general population and early mortality is likely due to indirect selection against cervical ribs. The cause for the co-occurrence of cervical ribs and adverse outcome remains unidentified.

Purpose: To investigate intraocular expression of COL7A1 and its protein product type VII collagen, particularly at the accommodation system.

Methods: Eyes from 26 human adult donors were used. COL7A1 expression was analyzed in ex vivo ciliary epithelium by microarray.

There is currently no widespread strategy for treating medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), so our aim was to evaluate retrospectively the outcome of a minimally invasive treatment protocol for patients with both MRONJ and cancer. We designed a retrospective cohort study of patients with cancer who had been diagnosed with MRONJ after treatment with denosumab or bisphosphonates given intravenously. Primary outcome measures were improvement in the clinical stage of MRONJ and the time course to its resolution.

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) derived from a odontogenic cyst is a rare form of odontogenic carcinoma. The incidence of carcinomas arising from odontogenic cysts is particularly uncommon and is reported to occur in 1-2 individuals for every 1,000 cases. The present case describes a 25-year-old man who was initially diagnosed with a chronically infected odontogenic cyst of the mandible.

The purpose of this study was to compare medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) with osteoradionecrosis (ORN). Group 1 comprised 74 MRONJ patients (93 lesions) and group 2 comprised 59 ORN patients (69 lesions). Patient characteristics, clinical presentation of the lesions, the presence of complications, and the relationship with previous dental extractions were analyzed for both groups.

A prenatally detected case of a rare mosaic tetrasomy 12p/trisomy 12p is reported, presenting as the well-known accessory isochromosome 12p and a supernumerary single 12p marker in 17/24 and 6/24 clones of cultured amniotic fluid cells, respectively. The chromosomal nature of both marker chromosomes was investigated in cultured amniotic fluid cells by fluorescent in situ hybridization with various probes: the 12-centromeric probes p alpha 12H8 and D12Z3, a whole chromosome 12 paint, and the chromosome 12p-specific paint M28. DNA analysis revealed a maternal origin of the extra 12p material.
