Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the evolutionary roots of over 7,000 newly identified short open reading frames (sORFs) in humans, finding that many are relatively new in evolutionary terms and formed de novo.
  • Researchers discovered 221 previously overlooked sORFs that can generate tiny peptides, smaller than any known human microprotein.
  • Through mass spectrometry and cellular assays, the study links these small peptides to important biological processes like mRNA splicing and translational regulation, shedding light on the role of young proteins in the human proteome.

Background & Aims: The use of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) in the hospital setting is important to reach individual protein and energy goals in patients at risk for malnutrition. Compliance with ONS can be challenging but may be improved by prescribing ONS in smaller portions with medication rounds (MEDPass). We compared the likelihood of meeting energy and protein requirements in patients receiving ONS with MEDPass versus conventional ONS administration.

Dendritic cells (DCs) have received considerable attention as potential targets for the development of novel cancer immunotherapies. However, the clinical efficacy of DC-based vaccines remains suboptimal, largely reflecting local and systemic immunosuppression at baseline. An autologous DC-based vaccine (DCVAC) has recently been shown to improve progression-free survival and overall survival in randomized clinical trials enrolling patients with lung cancer (SLU01, NCT02470468) or ovarian carcinoma (SOV01, NCT02107937), but not metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (SP005, NCT02111577), despite a good safety profile across all cohorts.

It is assumed that healthcare workers are at the highest risk to be infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, few data from healthcare workers who do not primarily take care of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection support this assumption. We investigated the prevalence of immunoglobulin G (Ig G) against SARS-CoV-2 among healthcare workers who do not primarily take care of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and the general population in a well-defined geographical area.

Background: Disease-related malnutrition is highly prevalent in hospitalized medical and geriatric inpatients. It is associated with negative outcomes such as muscle wasting, decline of functional status, and increased morbidity and mortality. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are frequently used in nutritional therapy to increase intake.

Background: In older patients, sarcopenia is a prevalent disease associated with negative outcomes. Sarcopenia has been investigated in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), but the criteria for diagnosis of the disease are heterogeneous. This systematic review of the current literature aims to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients undergoing TAVI and to analyse the impact of sarcopenia on clinical outcomes.

Appropriate macrophage response to an implanted biomaterial is crucial for successful tissue healing outcomes. In this work we investigated how intrinsic topological cues from electrospun biomaterials and extrinsic mechanical loads cooperate to guide macrophage activation and macrophage-tendon fibroblast cross-talk. We performed a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments using aligned or randomly oriented polycaprolactone nanofiber substrates in both mechanically loaded and unloaded conditions.

Circulating oxidized phospholipids are increasingly recognized as biomarkers of atherosclerosis. Clinical association studies have been mainly performed using an immune assay based on monoclonal antibody E06, which recognizes a variety of molecular species of oxidized phosphatidylcholine (OxPC) in lipoproteins, cell membranes or covalently bound to plasma proteins. Accumulating evidence shows that individual molecular species of OxPC demonstrate different biological activities and have different half-life times.

Osteosarcoma is the most frequent primary tumor of bone and is characterized by its high tendency to metastasize in lungs. Although treatment in cases of early diagnosis results in a 5-yr survival rate of nearly 60%, the prognosis for patients with secondary lesions at diagnosis is poor, and their 5-yr survival rate remains below 30%. In the present work, we have used a number of analytical methods to investigate the impact of increased metastatic potential on the biophysical properties and force generation of osteosarcoma cells.
