Special Issue Introduction: The GLES Open Science Challenge 2021: A Pilot Project on the Applicability of Registered Reports in Quantitative Political Science.

The GLES Open Science Challenge 2021 was a pioneering initiative in quantitative political science. Aimed at increasing the adoption of replicable and transparent research practices, it led to this special issue. The project combined the rigor of registered reports-a new publication format in which studies are evaluated prior to data collection/access and analysis-with quantitative political science research in the context of the 2021 German federal election.

Neurodevelopmental Disorders: From Genetics to Functional Pathways.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are a class of disorders affecting brain development and function and are characterized by wide genetic and clinical variability. In this review, we discuss the multiple factors that influence the clinical presentation of NDDs, with particular attention to gene vulnerability, mutational load, and the two-hit model. Despite the complex architecture of mutational events associated with NDDs, the various proteins involved appear to converge on common pathways, such as synaptic plasticity/function, chromatin remodelers and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway.

Increased Flame Retardancy of Enzymatic Functionalized PET and Nylon Fabrics via DNA Immobilization.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and nylon find their main applications in working clothes, domestic furniture and as indoor decoration (curtains and carpets). The increasing attention on healthy lifestyle, together with protection and safety, gained a strong interest in today's society. In this context, reducing the flammability of textiles has been tackled by designing flame retardants (FRs) able to suppress or delay the flame propagation.

Endophytic fungal production rates of volatile organic compounds are highest under microaerophilic conditions.

Volatile organic compound (VOC) production from an endophytic fungus was quantified at four oxygen concentrations (0, 1, 13 and 21 %) throughout culture growth phases. The filamentous fungus, a sp. (designated TI-13), was grown in a solid-state reactor with an agricultural byproduct, beet pulp, as the solid substrate.

Endogenous adenosine maintains cartilage homeostasis and exogenous adenosine inhibits osteoarthritis progression.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by cartilage destruction and chondrocytes have a central role in this process. With age and inflammation chondrocytes have reduced capacity to synthesize and maintain ATP, a molecule important for cartilage homeostasis. Here we show that concentrations of ATP and adenosine, its metabolite, fall after treatment of mouse chondrocytes and rat tibia explants with IL-1β, an inflammatory mediator thought to participate in OA pathogenesis.

Rapid total volatile organic carbon quantification from microbial fermentation using a platinum catalyst and proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry.

A novel analytical system was developed to rapidly and accurately quantify total volatile organic compound (VOC) production from microbial reactor systems using a platinum catalyst and a sensitive CO detector. This system allows nearly instantaneous determination of total VOC production by utilizing a platinum catalyst to completely and quantitatively oxidize headspace VOCs to CO in coordination with a CO detector. Measurement of respiratory CO by bypassing the catalyst allowed the total VOC content to be determined from the difference in the two signals.

Personal values and political activism: a cross-national study.

Using data from 28 countries in four continents, the present research addresses the question of how basic values may account for political activism. Study 1 (N = 35,116) analyses data from representative samples in 20 countries that responded to the 21-item version of the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ-21) in the European Social Survey. Study 2 (N = 7,773) analyses data from adult samples in six of the same countries (Finland, Germany, Greece, Israel, Poland, and United Kingdom) and eight other countries (Australia, Brazil, Chile, Italy, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine, and United States) that completed the full 40-item PVQ.

The role of personal values and basic traits in perceptions of the consequences of immigration: a three-nation study.

Using data from Italy, Spain, and Germany (N= 1,569), this study investigated the role of basic values (universalism and security) and basic traits (openness and agreeableness) in predicting perceptions of the consequences of immigration. In line with Schwartz's (1992) theory, we conceptualized security as having two distinct components, one concerned with safety of the self (personal security) and the other with harmony and stability of larger groups and of society (group security). Structural equation modelling revealed that universalism values underlie perceptions that immigration has positive consequences and group security values underlie perceptions that it has negative consequences.

Polylactic acid implants (New-Fill) to correct facial lipoatrophy in HIV-infected patients: results of the open-label study VEGA.

Background: In the absence of currently available therapy to manage facial lipoatrophy, strategies used to compensate for facial fat loss warrant clinical evaluation.

Methods: The goal of this open-label, single-arm, pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of facial injections of poly-L-lactic acid (PLA) (New-Fill) in HIV-infected patients with severe facial lipoatrophy. Patients received four sets of injection at day 0 and then every 2 weeks for 6 weeks.

Background: Paraneoplastic pemphigus was first described in 1990 in 5 patients with extensive mucocutaneous erosions, a distinct set of autoantibodies, and underlying neoplasia. Since then, patients described have been middle-aged, have suffered from prognostically unfavorable malignant neoplasms, and have responded poorly to immunosuppressive agents.

Observation: A 16-year-old boy was examined with extensive oral erosions, halitosis that interfered with his quality of life, and rapid weight loss.

Synergistic growth inhibitory and differentiating effects of trimidox and tiazofurin in human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells.

Increased ribonucleotide reductase (RR) activity has been linked with malignant transformation and tumor cell growth. Therefore, this enzyme is considered to be an excellent target for cancer chemotherapy. We have examined the effects of a newly patented RR inhibitor, trimidox (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzohydroxamidoxime).

NPPB inhibits the basolateral membrane K+ conductance in the isolated bullfrog cornea.

The effects of the Cl- channel blocker, 4-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)benzoate (NPPB) on active transepithelial Cl- transport were measured in the isolated bullfrog cornea. With a Cl(-)-free Ringers, stromal-side 10(-5) M NPPB elicited a maximum depolarization of the membrane voltage from -72 +/- 6 to -48 +/- 9 mV (n = 6, P less than 0.05) and reduced the magnitude of the depolarization induced by a 10-fold increase in K+ concentration.

[The effect of chemotherapy on survival time in advanced breast carcinoma].

Effects of oxytocin on cation content and electrophysiology of frog skin epithelium.

We measured effects of oxytocin on current-voltage (I-V) relations of frog (Rana catesbeiana) skins impaled with an intracellular microelectrode. In both Cl- and Cl(-)-free (SO4(2-) solutions, oxytocin caused an approximate doubling short-circuit current (Isc) and a depolarization of the cell membrane. Increase in apical membrane slope conductance, chord conductance, and permeability after oxytocin correlated with the increase in amiloride-sensitive Isc.

Insulin action on electrophysiological properties of apical and basolateral membranes of frog skin.

We measured the effects of insulin on the current-voltage (I-V) relations of frog skins impaled with an intracellular microelectrode. The current across the cell membranes was assumed to be equal to the amiloride-inhibitable current. Insulin increased short-circuit current (Isc) approximately 40% from the control value.

Role of prostaglandin release in the response of tight epithelia to Ca2+ ionophores.

We have studied the effects of the Ca2+ ionophores A23187 and ionomycin on ion transport across amphibian skin and urinary bladder. Both A23187 and ionomycin stimulated transepithelial Na+ transport across the skin. Ionomycin also markedly increased the conductance of an amiloride-insensitive pathway.

Radionuclide assessment of a normal left ventricular response to exercise in patients without evidence of heart disease.
