Drug hypersensitivity in patients with presumed histamine intolerance and mast cell activation disease There is no evidence to suggest that sensitization against drugs occurs more frequently among patients with presumed histamine intolerance compared to patients with normal tolerance to histamine. However, preclinical data suggest interactions between some drugs and histamine catabolism. Nevertheless, the clinical relevance of these findings remains unclear as histamine in humans can be catabolized by different pathways.

While some harmless strains of Bacillus are used as probiotic, others can cause nausea and vomiting, and represent an important food safety concern. The lung alveolar region experiences remodeling during several acute and chronic lung diseases, as for instance idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a fatal disease, whose onset is correlated with repetitive microinjuries to the lung alveolar epithelium and abnormal alveolar wound repair. Although a high degree of mechanical stress (>20% linear strain) is thought to potentially induce IPF, the effect of lower, physiological levels of strain (5-12% linear strain) on IPF pathophysiology remains unknown. The antiretroviral drug abacavir (abc) elicits severe drug hypersensitivity reactions in HLA-B*5701(+) individuals. To understand the abc-specific activation of CD8(+) T cells, we generated abc-specific T-cell clones (abc-TCCs). Background: Patients with birch pollen allergy (major allergen: Bet v 1) have often an associated oral allergy syndrome (OAS) to apple, which contains the cross-reactive allergen Mal d 1. As successful birch pollen immunotherapy does not consistently improve apple related OAS symptoms, we evaluated whether regular apple consumption has an effect on OAS and immune parameters of Mal d 1 or Bet v 1 allergy.

Methods: A total of 40 patients with a clear history of birch pollen rhinoconjunctivitis and associated OAS to apple were included in an open, randomized, controlled clinical trial: 27 patients consumed daily defined amount of apple (1-128 g), doubling the amount every two to three weeks, while 13 patients remained untreated.

A proinflammatory role of T helper (Th)17 cells, producing IL-22 and IL-17A, has been favored although there is evidence for negative immune regulation by IL-17A. Here we show that IL-22 was produced during an allergic response in lungs of mice, immunized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA), and that IL-22 neutralization further augmented the eosinophil recruitment to the lung. In a second allergy model, transfer of OVA-pulsed dendritic cells (DC) into naive mice conveyed eosinophil recruitment in response to subsequent inhaled OVA challenge, while DC preincubation with recombinant IL-22 abolished this response.

Immune reactions to drugs can cause a variety of diseases involving the skin, liver, kidney, lungs, and other organs. Beside immediate, IgE-mediated reactions of varying degrees (urticaria to anaphylactic shock), many drug hypersensitivity reactions appear delayed, namely hours to days after starting drug treatment, showing a variety of clinical manifestations from solely skin involvement to fulminant systemic diseases which may be fatal. Immunohistochemical and functional studies of drug-specific T cells in patients with delayed reactions confirmed a predominant role for T cells in the onset and maintenance of immune-mediated delayed drug hypersensitivity reactions (type IV reactions).
