Vasopressin analog (DDAVP) improves memory in human males.

One specific analog of arginine vasopressin, 1-desamine-8-D-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP), has been shown to improve learning and memory in humans. Healthy young male adult subjects treated with DDAVP demonstrated better memory for implicational sentences than did control subjects. The same treatment had no influence on women given the same memory task.

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis masquerading as hypernephroma with lung metastases.

We report a case of lymphomatoid granulomatosis, a clinicopathologic entity characterized by angiocentric, angiodestructive and lymphoreticular proliferation, which was mistaken for a classical solid renal neoplasm with lung metastases.

Congenital dysplastic angiopathy (Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome) with vulvar involvement. A case report.

Congenital dysplastic angiopathy (Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome) consists of angiomata and congenital varicosities with trophic changes of soft tissues and various parts of the skeletal system. Involvement of female genitalia is rare and has been reported to occur in only four patients. The authors treated a patient with a lymphangioma of the vulva associated with congenital dysplastic angiopathy.

[Clomethiazole poisoning].

Clomethiazol can cause addiction, it can cause misbehavior in street traffic, and overdosage can lead to death. This paper presents 18 fatal cases in which clomethiazol played an essential role. This type of intoxication can be indicated by case history, easily identifiable tablets in the stomach contents, and a characterized odor.

Skeletal calcium homeostasis and countermeasures to prevent disuse osteoporosis.

Maintenance of a skeleton capable of resisting the stresses of everyday life is dependent on the mechanical forces applied to the skeleton during normal activity in a 1-G environment. When the effects of 1-G on the longitudinal skeleton are removed, as with space travel or inactivity, bone and bone mineral are lost because bone resorption is greater than bone formation. Ninety healthy young men were studied during 5-36 weeks of continuous bed rest.

Polypoid carcinoma of the esophagus: a distinct radiological and histopathological entity.

The radiological manifestations of four cases of polypoid carcinoma of the esophagus are reviewed. A large pedunculated intraluminal mass, mimicking a foreign body was seen in three of the four cases. Due to this predominant exophytic growth, the follow-up esophagogram was normal in two patients after radiotherapy, despite the very large size of the lesions.

Immunosuppression as a high-risk factor in the development of condyloma acuminatum and squamous neoplasia of the cervix.

The iatrogenic immunosuppression in renal transplant recipients has been associated with an increased incidence of malignancy in these patients. Among 132 female transplant recipients at risk for the development of squamous lesions of the cervix, 11 (8.5%) developed cervical condylomas.

Effect of dichloromethylene diphosphonate on fluoride balance in healthy men.

Healthy men with a daily intake of 0.37 mg fluoride were given dichloromethylene diphosphonate (Cl2MDP) or a placebo during a period of ambulation followed by bed rest. In both groups, serum ionic fluoride was unchanged, and fluoride balances were negative, but Cl2MDP significantly reduced loss of fluoride in the treated groups.

Fluid weight uroflowmetry in women.

This study evaluates fluid weight uroflowmetry as a screening technique for urogynecologic conditions. Sixty women with no known pathologic condition volunteered for the evaluation of normal uroflowmetric parameters and curve patterns. Forty were menstruating cyclically, and 20 were postmenopausal.

[Malignant hyperthermia following an old gunshot head injury].

A case of symptomatic malignant hyperthermia is reported involving a 35-year-old man who suffered a serious cerebral injury after a gunshot to the head and who died from hyperthermia (41.5 degrees C) and tachycardia 1.5 days after dental treatment under general anesthesia.

Choriocarcinoma of the mesosalpinx masquerading as congestive heart failure: ultrastructural observations of the tumor.

A 45-year-old woman suffered from hypertension and congestive heart failure for 5 months. She was found to have a choriocarcinoma of the left mesosalpinx. The final event was, in all probability, a massive pulmonary tumor embolus which occurred shortly after removal of the uterus and adnexae.

Metastases to the uterus from extrapelvic primary tumors.

Eleven cases of metastases to the uterus from extrapelvic primary tumors are presented. The mean age of these patients was 52 years. The most common primary tumors were breast (five patients), stomach (three), and colon (two).

Carcinoma of the esophagus: assessment of submucosal extent.

Submucosal extension of carcinoma of the esophagus is common, often presenting as a varicoid pattern on the esophagogram. Forty-two per cent of our 153 patients with carcinoma of the esophagus showed area(s) of a varicoid pattern in association with the other usual pattern(s) (fungating, ulcerating or infiltrating). A few of the patients have findings similar to those associated with esophageal varices on the esophagogram.

Fluoride balance studies in healthy men during bed rest with and without a fluoride supplement.

In a program of studies of disuse osteoporosis, fluoride balances were determined in healthy men during ambulation and then during bed rest for 6 to 17 wk. Control subjects ingested basal diets containing 0.4 mg fluoride per day, whereas experimental subjects received 10-mg fluoride supplements in divided doses with meals.

[Remarkable intracranial findings in a burn victim].

In a case of death from burning, the examination of the corpse (80 year old female pensioner, walking disability, almost blind, heavy smoker) resulted in a number of remarkable findings: Epidural burn hematoma, retraction and rupture of the dura mater, cauliflower-like swelling of the brain in the frontal area, detachment of both crura cerebri with hemorrhaging into the interstitial tissue, microscopically recognizable hemorrhaging in the right frontal lobe of the brain. The mentioned findings were construed as post mortem changes. The question how such hemorrhaging could occur after death is being discussed by means of the literature.
