Introduction: Acetabular erosion is an important complication in hemiarthroplasty and may lead to total hip arthroplasty as a conversion. The results of total hip arthroplasty as a conversion remain unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the outcome of total hip arthroplasty as a conversion with primary total hip arthroplasty.

Background And Purpose: There is no consensus on the treatment of patients with femoral neck fractures between internal fixation (IF) or directly treated with a total hip arthroplasty (fracture-THA) in particular for the age group 60-70 years. Failure of IF is not uncommon, resulting in salvage total hip arthroplasty (salvage-THA). The aim of our study was to compare revision rates of salvage-THA with fracture-THA and osteoarthritis (OA)-THA.

Purpose: Several controversies in the optimal treatment of femoral neck fractures persist, together with large variations in clinical practice.

Methods: A narrative literature review covering 4 current controversies in the surgical management of femoral neck fractures (total hip arthroplasty (THA) versus hemiarthroplasty (HA), cemented versus uncemented HA, internal fixation versus arthroplasty, operative versus non-operative) was performed. Available literature was balanced against annual trends in the management of femoral neck fractures from the public domain of several national registries (Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand).

Background: Mobile health (mHealth) approaches are already having a fundamental impact on clinical practice in cardiovascular medicine. A variety of different health apps and wearable devices for capturing health data such as electrocardiograms (ECGs) exist. However, most mHealth technologies focus on distinct variables without integrating patients' quality of life, and the impact on clinical outcome measures of implementing those digital solutions into cardiovascular health care is still to be determined.

Liver transplantation (LT) for cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), or biliary tract cancer (BTC), remains controversial regarding high recurrence rates and poor prognosis. Oncological follow-up may benefit from tumor-inhibiting properties of mTOR inhibitors (mTORI), shown with improved survival for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after LT. The aim of this study was to investigate the recurrence and survival in relation to tumor type and type of immunosuppression (IS).

Introduction: Surgical treatment options for patients with an intracapsular fracture of the femoral neck (FFN) are primary osteosynthesis as a femoral head-spearing technique or primary (hemi)arthroplasty. The most common complications after primary osteosynthesis, such as avascular necrosis (AVN) or non-union, can result in conversion to Total Hip Arthroplasty (cTHA). Data concerning complications and survival rates of cTHA in comparison to primary Total Hip Arthroplasty (pTHA) after FFN are limited due to the absence of well-designed studies.

The autotaxin-lysophosphatidic acid (ATX-LPA) signaling pathway plays a role in a variety of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or neurodegeneration. A link to the pathogenesis of glaucoma is suggested by an overactive ATX-LPA axis in aqueous humor samples of glaucoma patients. Analysis of such samples suggests that the ATX-LPA axis contributes to the fibrogenic activity and resistance to aqueous humor outflow through the trabecular meshwork.

Background: In orthogeriatric centers, postoperative, multiprofessional comprehensive treatment has proven to be an effective component in the convalescence of geriatric patients. The aim of the treatment is to minimize the perioperative risk and safely achieve individual rehabilitation goals in the acute inpatient stay. To meet the needs of geriatric patients, in addition to changes in the spatial division and design, primarily adjustments to the team composition and the procedural processes are required.

Background and purpose - Trochanteric fractures are often treated using intramedullary fixation. In our institution, the TFN-Advanced Proximal Femoral Nailing System (TFNA) was introduced as replacement for the Gamma Trochanteric Nail (GTN3) for the treatment of these fractures as a result of a hospital-driven change of trauma implant supplier. We compared trochanteric fracture fixation failure rate between these 2 intramedullary nails.

Infectious diseases of the musculoskeletal system are in trauma surgery sometimes the symptoms that most severely impair patients and are a challenge to surgeons, hospitals and the economy of the public healthcare system. The systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare idiopathic syndrome that can provoke a fulminant life-threatening progress even if the primary infection is trivial. In addition to a clearly arranged description of the SCLS we report on an affected patient who developed a necrotizing myositis of the right thigh due to an unstable scar.

Background and purpose - Surgical treatment is still the mainstay of care even in very frail elderly hip fracture patients. However, one may argue whether surgery is in the best interest of all patients. We elucidated mortality rates of nonoperative management (NOM) of a hip fracture after shared decision-making in a cohort of very frail elderly patients.

Cities seek nuanced understanding of intraurban inequality in energy use, addressing both income and race, to inform equitable investment in climate actions. However, nationwide energy consumption surveys are limited (<6,000 samples in the United States), and utility-provided data are highly aggregated. Limited prior analyses suggest disparity in energy use intensity (EUI) by income is ∼25%, while racial disparities are not quantified nor unpacked from income.

Digitalization of three-dimensional (3-D) objects and scenes using modern depth sensors and high-resolution RGB cameras enables the preservation of human cultural artifacts at an unprecedented level of detail. Interactive visualization of these large datasets, however, is challenging without degradation in visual fidelity. A common solution is to fit the dataset into available video memory by downsampling and compression.
