Adverse effects of resuscitation due to closed-chest cardiac massage are common, and the incidence is increased when an incorrect technique is used. Nevertheless, thrombolytic therapy of a myocardial infarction can become necessary even after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In these patients, the risk of thrombolytic therapy-induced bleeding is immanent.

PIT1, a member of the POU-domain family of genes, is a positive regulatory factor of growth hormone, prolactin, and thyrotroph-stimulating hormone beta in several mammals. Therefore, PIT1 was chosen as a candidate gene to investigate its association with growth and carcass traits in pigs. The five Iowa State University reference/resource three-generation families consisting of crosses of Meishan x Duroc, Meishan x Hampshire, Meishan x Landrace, Minzhu x Hampshire, and Minzhu x Landrace were used.

The three components of the Novacor left ventricular assist system, compact controller, battery, and back-up battery, have been miniaturized in the development of the wearable system. Therefore patients can be fully mobilized receiving mechanical circulatory support while awaiting heart transplantation. Between February 1992 and April 1994 a total of eight patients with decompensated heart failure (6 dilated cardiomyopathy, 1 acute myocarditis, 1 ischemic cardiomyopathy) were treated with the Novacor left ventricular assist systems.

This prospective, randomised study compared total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) and inhalation anaesthesia with respect to endocrine stress response, haemodynamic reactions, and recovery. METHODS. The investigation included two groups of 20 ASA I-II patients 18-60 years of age scheduled for orthopaedic surgery.

Inactivation and double strand break (dsb) induction after heavy ion irradiation were studied in stationary phase cells of the highly radiation resistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans R1. There is evidence that the radiation sensitivity of this bacterium is nearly independent on energy in the range of up to 15 MeV/u for lighter ions (Ar). The responses to dsb induction for charged particles show direct relationship between increasing radiation dose and residual intact DNA.

Vegetative cells of E. coli differing in their radiosensitivity have been used in heavy ion irradiation experiment. Besides inactivation measurements also the induction of DNA double strand breaks (DSB) have been measured using the method of pulse-field gel electrophoresis.

The swine PIT-1 POU domain cDNA was used to study PIT-1 expression and to clone the PIT-1 genomic region to identify additional PIT-1 polymorphisms. PIT-1 was expressed only in the pituitary, confirming the swine cDNA identity. To study the PIT-1 genomic region, a clone containing 13.

Between 1981 and 1987 a total of 479 Hancock Extracorporeal bovine pericardial bioprostheses were implanted in 458 patients. During the time period from 1990 to 1993, 21 valves, 15 in the aortic and six in the mitral position, had to be removed 72 to 109 months after implantation. The mean age of these patients at the time of implantation was 49.

The hydrodynamic performance of four currently used bileaflet heart valve prostheses (St. Jude Medical, CarboMedics, modified Edwards-Duromedics, and Sorin-Bicarbon) with a nominal tissue anulus diameter of 27 mm were measured in the aortic position. All experiments were performed in nonpulsatile flow and in an electrohydraulic, computer-controlled pulse duplicator simulating the left side of the human circulatory system.

Multiple-junction structures were formed, on a microscopic scale, at room temperature, by the application of a strong electric field across originally homogeneous crystals of the ternary chalcopyrite semiconductor CulnSe(2). After removal of the electric field, the structures were examined with electron beam-induced current microscopy and their current-voltage characteristics were measured. Bipolar transistor action was observed, indicating that sharp bulk junctions can form in this way at low ambient temperatures.

An infected fistula was observed in a woman (Age: 69 years, weight: 60 kg, height: 159 cm) 14 days after insertion and 8 days after removal of a peridural catheter inserted preoperatively for postoperative analgesia after nephrectomy (carcinoma). Due to haemodynamic problems in the early postoperative period no analgetic or local anaesthetic medication was applied via the peridural catheter. After unsuccessful antibiotic and surgical treatment the women was transferred to the Neurosurgical department five weeks after nephrectomy.

Ascending infection is likely to be the main cause of late abortion and early delivery. In a retrospective evaluation performed at our hospital, evidence of infection was encountered in 76% of 195 pregnancies with premature infants having birth weights less than 2000 g. It may be assumed that the processes responsible for this development take place at the lower pole.

An new method of lung maturation during artificial placentation was evaluated during a series of 15 animal experiments in premature lambs (gestational age 125-132 days). Perfusion circuit with interposition of a membrane lung was connected with the umbilical vessels. Extracorporeal CO2-removal (ECCO2-R) and apneic oxygenation were provided during lung distension.

A nucleoprotein (NP) preparation purified from the chorioallantoic membrane of chicken eggs infected with fowl plague virus (A/FPV/Rostock/34, H7N1) yielded, in addition to the commonly known 56K protein, a 42K component that could not be detected in virus particles. After testing with a series of NP-specific monoclonal antibodies it was found that some reacted with both proteins and others were bound only by the 56K protein. Among both types of NP-specific monoclonal antibodies only a limited number were bound to infected murine cells.

A one step HPLC method for the determination of the main phospholipids, phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), sphingomyelin (SP) and lysolecithin (LL) in amniotic fluid, milk, tracheal secretion, lung lavages, gastric aspirates, infant formulas and some other human and animal media has been developed. Quantitation occurs automatically using computer calculation and lysolecithin as an internal standard. Detection limits are at about 0.

DNA measurements in renal cell carcinoma are demonstrating a considerable tumor heterogeneity. Tumor DNA content is one of important prognostic factors. Renal cell carcinomas can be divided into two main groups by single-cell cytophotometry: diploid/near diploid in grade 1 and 2 and mainly aneuploid in grade 3 with variable blocks and peaks.
