Background: This study tested the hypothesis that there would be improved asthma control with increasing doses of beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) formulated in hydrofluoroalkane-134a (HFA-BDP) and the standard chlorofluorocarbon propellants (CFC-BDP). Because HFA-BDP has improved lung deposition compared with CFC-BDP, this study also tested the hypothesis that HFA-BDP would provide more effective control of asthma than CFC-BDP.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, parallel-group blinded study, asthmatic subjects who had deterioration in asthma control after discontinuation of inhaled corticosteroids were randomized to receive one of 6 possible treatments: 100 microg/d, 400 microg/d, or 800 microg/d of HFA-BDP or 100 microg/d, 400 microg/d, or 800 microg/d of CFC-BDP for 6 weeks.

Peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) can be mobilized using chemotherapy and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). We and others previously reported a correlation of steady-state PBPC counts and the PBPC yield during mobilization in a small group of patients. Here we present data on 100 patients (patients: 25 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), five Hodgkin's disease, 35 multiple myeloma (MM), 35 solid tumour) which enabled a detailed analysis of determinants of steady-state PBPC levels and of mobilization efficiency in patient subgroups.

Autoimmune thyroiditis and myelosuppression following treatment with interferon-alpha for hepatitis C.

Case: We describe the case of a 48-year-old woman from Thailand diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C, who experienced a suppression of all blood cell counts accompanied by a newly developed clinically manifested autoimmune thyroid disorder after treatment with interferon alpha-2b (INF-alpha) 46 days after beginning of therapy a decrease of platelet, red and white blood cell counts became obvious. Concomitantly we observed an increase of FT4 and FT3 with a totally depressed TSH level 80 days after starting INF-alpha administration. Antibody assessment resulted in detection of high numbers of antithyroid-microsomal antibodies and antithyroglobulin antibodies.

The presence of Y-chromosomal sequences in the cells of patients with Turner-Syndrome (TS) is a risk factor for the development of gonadal tumors. Therefore and since demonstration of Y-material usually results in prophylactic gonadectomy optimal sensitivity and specificity of the diagnosis have to be attempted. We wanted to evaluate the diagnostic potential of cytogenetic investigations as routinely employed in TS.

[Automated mammary sonography and mammography: the differentiation of benign and malignant breast lesions].

Purpose: A prospective study on the differentiation of breast lesions was carried out using experimental combination schemes of mammography and automatic sonography.

Materials And Methods: X-ray mammograms and a B image from automatic sonography of 39 malignant and 41 benign lesions as well as 40 cases without lesions were separately examined by four experienced diagnosticians. The observers differentiated the findings mammographically and by measurement in the B images.

Norplant selection and satisfaction among low-income women.

Objectives: This study examined correlates of Norplant selection and satisfaction among low-income women.

Methods: Interviews were completed in family planning clinics in 4 Florida counties with 1152 Norplant users and 1268 nonusers, with follow-up interviews with a subsample up to 1 year later. Logistic regression models estimated the associations of socio-demographic and medical characteristics with Norplant selection and method satisfaction.

Genome scan of European-American schizophrenia pedigrees: results of the NIMH Genetics Initiative and Millennium Consortium.

The Genetics Initiative of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) was a multisite study that created a national repository of DNA from families informative for genetic linkage studies of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer's disease. The schizophrenia families were collected by three sites: Washington University, Harvard University, and Columbia University. This article, one in a series that describes the data collected for linkage analysis by the schizophrenia consortium, presents the results for the European-American sample.

The detection and replication of specific susceptibility loci for such complex disorders are facilitated by the availability of large samples of affected sib pairs and their nuclear families, along with standardized assessment and systematic ascertainment procedures. Characterization of whole genome radiation hybrid mapping resources for non-mammalian vertebrates.

Radiation hybrid panels are already available for genome mapping in human and mouse. In this study we have used two model organisms (chicken and zebrafish) to show that hybrid panels that contain a full complement of the donor genome can be generated by fusion to hamster cells. The quality of the resulting hybrids has been assessed using PCR and FISH.

Imiquimod, a patient-applied immune-response modifier for treatment of external genital warts.

Genital human papillomavirus infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Imiquimod is a new agent, an immune-response modifier, that has been demonstrated to have potent in vivo antiviral and antitumor effects in animal models. The present prospective, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of daily patient-applied imiquimod for up to 16 weeks for the treatment of external genital warts.

We have assembled a first-generation anchor map of the mouse genome using a panel of 94 whole-genome-radiation hybrids (WG-RHs) and 271 sequence-tagged sites (STSs). Background: To treat chlamydial infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends either a single dose of azithromycin or a 7-day course of doxycycline. Cost is a concern with the single-dose regimen; compliance is a concern with the multidose regimen.

Goal: To compare the use-effectiveness of azithromycin and doxycycline for preventing persistence or recurrence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in women and to evaluate associated risk behaviors.

Detection of malignant and benign breast lesions with an automated US system: results in 120 cases.

Purpose: To evaluate clinically an automated ultrasound (US) system for detecting benign and malignant breast lesions.

Materials And Methods: A prototype automated US system was used to examine 119 patients: 38 patients with 39 proved malignant breast lesions (7-50 mm), 41 patients with 41 proved benign breast lesions (8-40 mm), and 40 patients without breast lesions. The device yields a three-dimensional set of B-mode scans and reconstructed US images comparable to mammograms.
