This article is about the evaluation of possible differences in biomechanical or histomorphological properties of bone healing between saw osteotomy and random fracturing after 6 months. A standardized, 30 degrees oblique monocortical saw osteotomy of sheep tibia was carried out, followed by manual fracture completion of the opposed cortical bone. Fixation was performed by bridge plating (4.

Primary medullary nailing of femoral fractures is burdened by the risk of central and pulmonary complications in patients with polytrauma, especially in conjunction with craniocerebral or thoracic trauma. This also applies to unreamed medullary nailing. Primary treatment with external fixation necessitates secondary surgery with an altered procedure, the timing of which is not predictable.

The AO technique of wrist arthrodesis with an embedded iliac crest bone graft is a stable kind of fixation that allows early range of motion. Solid fusion with correction of the deformity and relief of pain can be achieved. A correct position in dorsal extension and ulnar abduction will improve hand function, but a decrease in grip strength must be expected.

Clinical studies and animal experiments have not yet reached a consensus on primary and unreamed medullary nailing in polytrauma, especially when craniocerebral and thoracic injuries are involved. Gaping plate osteosynthesis, a recognized technique for treating complex fractures, also represents, with our technique, an option in simple femoral stem fractures.

Several thousand blood samples were taken from alcoholized drivers at the Blood Alcohol Examination Centre of the Institute of legal Medicine at Cologne University. These samples showed blood alcohol contents (BAC) as well as GGT, CDT, methanol, acetone and isopropanol levels which indicated alcohol addiction. The blood samples were selected by the drivers' ages and their BAC, but in some cases the GGT also played a role.

Lysates of erythrocytes, leukocytes, lymphocytes, and extracts of sperms were investigated for the PGM1 isozymes by three techniques: starch gel electrophoresis, high voltage thin-layer agarose gel electrophresis, and thin-layer isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gel. On starch, only the well known common phenotypes 1, 2-1, and 2 were demonstrable. On agarose, different distances of the two main cathodal bands (a,b) among the phenotypes 2-1 were noted.

Electron microscopic examination of a surgically removed atrial myxoma showed, besides fibrocytes and fibroblasts, mainly isolated smooth muscle cells arranged in solid cellstrands. They are responsible for collagen-and elastin-synthesis. They are presumed to arise from subendocardial smooth muscle cells and considered to be neoplastic.
