Background: Management of patients with coma of unknown etiology (CUE) is a major challenge in most emergency departments (EDs). CUE is associated with a high mortality and a wide variety of pathologies that require differential therapies. A suspected diagnosis issued by pre-hospital emergency care providers often drives the first approach to these patients.

Sheet silicates, also known as phyllosilicates, contain parallel sheets of tetrahedral silicate built up by [SiO] entities connected through intermediate metal-oxygen octahedral layers. The well-known minerals talc and pyrophyllite are belonging to this group based on magnesium and aluminium, respectively. Surprisingly, the ferric analogue rarely occurs in nature and is found in mixtures and conglomerates with other materials only.

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? Is it possible to modify the CO-rebreathing method to acquire reliable measurements of haemoglobin mass in ventilated patients? What is the main finding and its importance? A 'single breath' of CO with a subsequent 30 s breath hold provides almost as exact a measure of haemoglobin mass as the established optimized CO-rebreathing method when applied to healthy subjects. The modified method has now to be checked in ventilated patients before it can be used to quantify the contributions of blood loss and of dilution to the severity of anaemia.

Abstract: Anaemia is defined by the concentration of haemoglobin (Hb).

Objectives: We investigated the relationship between the ultrasonographic Halo Score and temporal artery biopsy (TAB) findings in GCA.

Methods: This is a prospective study including 90 patients suspected of having GCA. Ultrasonography of temporal/axillary arteries and a TAB were obtained in all patients at baseline.

The exact formation mechanism of tantalum oxides (and in general, metal/mixed metal oxides) from alkoxide precursors is still not fully understood, particularly when forming cluster-like or amorphous materials. The structural evolution of Ta-based oxides was studied in detail using X-ray total scattering experiments along with subsequent pair distribution function (PDF) analyses. Starting from a tantalum alkoxide precursor (Ta(OEt)), the formation of hydrolysed TaOH clusters in highly diluted aqueous solution was analysed.

A detailed photophysical study of two faecal pigments (FPs), Urobilin (UB) and Stercobilin (SB), and their zinc complexes [FP-Zn(II)] was carried out. The enhancement of UB and SB fluorescence resulting from the formation of their Zn(II) complexes was attributed to the complexation-induced rigidity of the chromophoric units, and the corresponding decrease of nonradiative decay rate constants of the excited singlet states (k). The effect of various physicochemical environments was also studied in detail in order to understand the fluorescence behaviour of the Zn(II) complexes.

Schall and Heinrichs question our interpretation that the climatic debt in understory plant communities is locally modulated by canopy buffering. However, our results clearly show that the discrepancy between microclimate warming rates and thermophilization rates is highest in forests where canopy cover was reduced, which suggests that the need for communities to respond to warming is highest in those forests.

Bertrand question our interpretation about warming effects on the thermophilization in forest plant communities and propose an alternative way to analyze climatic debt. We show that microclimate warming is a better predictor than macroclimate warming for studying forest plant community responses to warming. Their additional analyses do not affect or change our interpretations and conclusions.

The attachment of homoleptic Ru bis-terpy complexes on graphene oxide significantly improved the photocatalytic activity of the complexes. These straightforward complexes were applied as photocatalysts in a Heck reaction. Due to covalent functionalization on graphene oxide, which functions as an electron reservoir, excellent yields were obtained.

Purpose: To report the 2-year efficacy and safety of abicipar every 8 weeks and quarterly (after initial doses) compared with monthly ranibizumab in patients with treatment-naïve neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

Design: Two multicenter, randomized, phase 3 clinical trials with identical protocols (CEDAR and SEQUOIA). Analyses used pooled trial data.

We have successfully grown centimeter-sized layered [Formula: see text] single crystals under high oxygen pressures of 120-150 bar by the floating zone technique. This enabled us to perform neutron scattering experiments where we observe close to quarter-integer magnetic peaks below [Formula: see text] that are accompanied by steep upwards dispersing spin excitations. Within the high-frequency Ni-O bond stretching phonon dispersion, a softening at the propagation vector for a checkerboard modulation can be observed.

Background: To assess the reliability of the consensually agreed US definitions of major salivary gland lesions and the US scoring system for salivary gland assessment in patients with SS.

Methods: Nine experienced sonographers scanned and read the US images of both parotid glands (PGs) and submandibular glands (SMGs) in eight patients with primary and secondary SS in two rounds. A consensually agreed four-grade semi-quantitative scoring was applied in B-mode for morphological lesions: grade 0, normal; grade 1, mild inhomogeneity without anechoic or hypoechoic areas; grade 2, moderate inhomogeneity with focal anechoic or hypoechoic areas; grade 3, severe inhomogeneity with diffuse an- or hypoechoic areas occupying the entire gland or fibrous gland.

Background: There has been a shift in recent years to using ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as first-line investigations for suspected cranial large vessel vasculitis (LVV) and is a new recommendation by the EULAR 2018 guidelines for imaging in LVV. This cross-sectional study compares the performance of US and MRI and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for detecting vasculitis in patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA).

Methods: Patients with new-onset or already diagnosed GCA were recruited.

Background: Iron is an essential element for plants and abundantly present in most mineral soils. The mobility of iron is, however, dependent on the redox potential and hydrogen activity (pH) of the soil, factors that may limit its availability to plants in particular at alkaline pHs. Iron deficiency triggers pronounced changes in the transcriptional profile of plants, inducing processes that aid in the acquisition, uptake, and translocation of iron.

Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) can reduce the total amount of Portland cement clinker in concrete production. Rice husk ashes (RHA) can be converted from an agricultural by-product to a high-performance concrete constituent due to a high amount of reactive silica with pozzolanic properties if they are burnt under controlled conditions. The way and duration of combustion, the cooling process as well as the temperature have an effect on the silica form and thus, the chemical and physical performance of the RHA.

A constrained density functional theory/classical trajectory surface hopping study of the photochemical dissociation of oxirane (CH)O is presented. The calculations confirm the Gomer-Noyes mechanism for the initial reaction and agree largely with experimental photolysis data including reaction yields. The calculated yields, however, depend both on temperature and its modeling.

Imaging in large-vessel vasculitis.

Best Pract Res Clin Rheumatol

December 2020

Imaging has recently been acknowledged as at least equivalent to histology for confirming large-vessel vasculitis in the recommendations of scientific societies. Many studies have been recently published on the use of ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in giant cell arteritis and Takayasu arteritis. Ultrasound, MRI and CT show concentric, arterial wall thickening in vasculitis.
