Alongside enantioselective catalysis, synthetic chemists are often confronted by the challenge of achieving catalyst control over the relative configuration to stereodivergently access desired diastereomers. Typically, these approaches iteratively or simultaneously control multiple stereogenic units for which dual catalytic methods comprising sequential, relay, and synergistic catalysis emerged as particularly efficient strategies. In this Perspective, the benefits and challenges of catalyst-controlled diastereodivergence in the construction of carbon stereocenters are discussed on the basis of illustrative examples.

Background: Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) is a common neurologic symptom which can be triggered by pathogens, autoimmunity, trauma, tumors, cholesteatoma or further local conditions disturbing the peripheral section of the nerve. In general, its cause is often difficult to identify, remaining unknown in over two thirds of cases. As we have previously shown that the quantity and quality of pathogen-specific T cells change during active infections, we hypothesized that such changes may also help to identify the causative pathogen in PFPs of unknown origin.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored the feasibility of using resistant potato starch (RPS) in 10 adults undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) to evaluate its impact on gut microbiota and metabolites.
  • - Results showed that RPS increased fecal levels of butyrate significantly compared to when participants were not on RPS, achieving the target adherence of over 70% in the treatment group.
  • - Additionally, while plasma metabolites changed over time, those in RPS recipients were more stable than historical controls, indicating potential benefits of RPS in HCT patients, leading to a planned phase 2 trial on its effects on graft-versus-host disease.

Background: The constrained one-step spectral CT Image Reconstruction method (cOSSCIR) has been developed to estimate basis material maps directly from spectral CT data using a model of the polyenergetic x-ray transmissions and incorporating convex constraints into the inversion problem. This 'one-step' approach has been shown to stabilize the inversion in the case of photon-counting CT, and may provide similar benefits to dual-kV systems that utilize integrating detectors. Since the approach does not require the same rays be acquired for every spectral measurement, cOSSCIR can apply to dual energy protocols and systems used clinically, such as fast and slow kV switching systems and dual source scanning.

Introduction: Failure to properly prepare the equine athlete for exercise and support post-exercise recovery is a contributing factor to physical breakdown and lameness. Equine physiotherapy was not introduced until the early twentieth century and has since evolved to allow for wearable therapies such as therapeutic boots to be accessible to a broad spectrum of equestrians. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ceramic boots, boots combining vibration and cryotherapy, and boots containing tourmaline on the performance of sport horses during jumping as well as to examine changes in vital signs in response to treatment.

Background: Identification of biological molecules related to post cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) lung injury could help diagnose, predict and potentially impact patient's clinical course after cardiac surgery. Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4) initially identified as potential biomarker for patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation following CPB in a prior study. To further validate these findings, we sought to understand the association of lower plasma PRG4 with prolonged mechanical ventilation and worse lung compliance in a larger cohort of pediatric patients post CPB.

To address global sustainability challenges, (public) policy interventions are needed to induce or accelerate technological change. While most policy interventions occur on the local level, their innovation effects can spill over to other jurisdictions, potentially having global impact. These spillovers can increase or reduce the incentive for interventions.

"All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; the dosage alone makes it so a thing is not a poison" (Paracelsus, ~ 1538 AD). This well-known quote seems to aptly summarize the current understanding of the interaction between exercise and atrial fibrillation (AF). A host of data strongly suggests that regular exercise has a protective effect against developing AF.

The search of new properties in novel oxide heterostructures requires the exploration of new fabrication methods and the study, at the microscopic level, of the processes involved during the synthesis. We present a synchrotron-based spectromicroscopic investigation of a magnetite/hematite bilayer on Pt(111) grown in a two-step process by thermal evaporation and Low Energy Ion Bombardment (LEIB). The characterization includes the study of structural, electronic, chemical, and magnetic properties using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM), Photoemission Electron Microscopy (PEEM), or X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD).

Genomic data are becoming increasingly affordable and easy to collect, and new tools for their analysis are appearing rapidly. Conservation biologists are interested in using this information to assist in management and planning but are typically limited financially and by the lack of genomic resources available for non-model taxa. It is therefore important to be aware of the pitfalls as well as the benefits of applying genomic approaches.
