During embryonic development post-mitotic neurons of the precerebellar neuroepithelium, migrate from the rhombic lip to the ventral part of the neural tube to form the precerebellar nuclei of the pons and medulla oblongata. In this study, we show that neural basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors NSCL-1 and -2 are expressed in all cells of the anterior extramural migration stream (aes), which forms the precerebellar nuclei. The combined inactivation of NSCL-1 and -2 led to a complete absence of the pontine nuclei and a strong reduction in the reticulotegmental nuclei.

Background: We report here our institutional experience and reflect the relevant literature concerning the robotic approach in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for mediastinal lesions.

Methods: During August 2001-December 2005, 33 patients (15 males and 18 females aged 18-77 years) with mediastinal masses were operated on minimally invasively using the da Vinci robotic system. There were 22 thymectomies (nine thymomas), four resections of paravertebral neurinomas, one ectopic mediastinal parathyroidectomy, one resection of a lymphangioma, one resection of ectopic goitre, one resection of lymph node metastasis of thyroid carcinoma and three oesophageal procedures (one leiomyoma, one traction diverticulum and one foregut cyst).

We studied the influence of nanosteps on signal intensity in gap-mode tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). A benzenethiol monolayer adsorbed on an Au substrate was investigated. The correlation between the TERS signal and the local topography on the substrate shows that a 2 nm high sharp step on the Au surface can significantly increase the enhancement.

The influence of dielectric substrates on the Raman scattering activities of Ag overlayers has been investigated. Materials with low refractive indices, such as SiO(2), SiO(x) and AlF(3), were found to provide suitable supporting platforms for Ag films to give strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering for dye molecules when illuminated at 488 nm. This finding was then extended to tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS).

Excessive release of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) during loading and/or injury of the cartilage matrix may contribute to the onset or progression of osteoarthritis. This pathological role may be related to the ability of bFGF to decrease proteoglycan synthesis and to antagonize the activity of anabolic growth factors in cartilage such as insulin-like growth factor-1 and bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7 or OP-1). Matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13), a catabolic cartilage-degrading enzyme, is dramatically up-regulated by inflammatory cytokines or by fibronectin fragments in articular chondrocytes.

A three-week-old Holstein Friesian calf and a 20-month-old Jersey heifer were referred to the Department of Farm Animals, University of Zurich, because of coxofemoral luxation. Both animals were moderately lame on the affected hind limb, which was swollen in the hip region and appeared to be adducted and shorter than the contralateral normal hind limb. Radiographs of the affected hips confirmed craniodorsal displacement of the femur.

A growing interest in promoting physical activity through multi-sectoral community-based programmes has highlighted the need for effective programme evaluation. Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, an international workgroup of behavioural, medical, public health and other scientists and practitioners endorsed the principle of careful evaluation of all programmes and in a consensus process developed the Rio de Janeiro Recommendations for Evaluation of Physical Activity Interventions". To study the role of different members of the bHLH gene family for sensory organ development we have generated NSCL-1 and NeuroD compound-mutant mice. Double homozygous animals were characterized by a more severe reduction of the petrosal and vestibulocochlear ganglia than NeuroD-knockout mice. The more severe reduction of the petrosal and vestibulocochlear ganglia in double-knockout mice indicates overlapping functions of the two genes during neuronal development.
