Increased numbers of endothelial progenitor cells in peripheral blood and tumor specimens in non-small cell lung cancer: a methodological challenge and an ongoing debate on the clinical relevance.

Bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) play an important role in neovascularisation and tumor growth. However, the clinical relevance of EPCs on blood vessel formation in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is unclear. EPC numbers in circulation are very low and therefore their detection is technically challenging.

With about 20% of all lung cancers small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents a major subset of this entity. Although therapeutic improvements did not receive as much attention as in non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), many small steps of clinical progress have been achieved within the last 20 years. An optimal treatment should be based on an interdisciplinary treatment plan.

Mechanotransduction of bovine articular cartilage superficial zone protein by transforming growth factor beta signaling.

Objective: Mechanical signals are key determinants in tissue morphogenesis, maintenance, and restoration strategies in regenerative medicine, although molecular mechanisms of mechanotransduction remain to be elucidated. This study was undertaken to investigate the mechanotransduction process of expression of superficial zone protein (SZP), a critical joint lubricant.

Methods: Regional expression of SZP was first quantified in cartilage obtained from the femoral condyles of immature bovines, using immunoblotting, and visualized by immunohistochemistry.

Policies related to active transport to and from school: a multisite case study.

Active transportation to and from school (ATS) is a viable strategy to help increase physical activity among youth. ATS can be challenging because initiatives require transdisciplinary collaboration, are influenced by the built environment and are affected by numerous policies. The purpose of this study is to identify policies and factors that influence ATS initiatives.

NSCL-1 and -2 control the formation of precerebellar nuclei by orchestrating the migration of neuronal precursor cells.

During embryonic development post-mitotic neurons of the precerebellar neuroepithelium, migrate from the rhombic lip to the ventral part of the neural tube to form the precerebellar nuclei of the pons and medulla oblongata. In this study, we show that neural basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors NSCL-1 and -2 are expressed in all cells of the anterior extramural migration stream (aes), which forms the precerebellar nuclei. The combined inactivation of NSCL-1 and -2 led to a complete absence of the pontine nuclei and a strong reduction in the reticulotegmental nuclei.

Relevance of group Milleri streptococci in thoracic surgery: a clinical update.

The robotic approach for mediastinal lesions.

Background: We report here our institutional experience and reflect the relevant literature concerning the robotic approach in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for mediastinal lesions.

Methods: During August 2001-December 2005, 33 patients (15 males and 18 females aged 18-77 years) with mediastinal masses were operated on minimally invasively using the da Vinci robotic system. There were 22 thymectomies (nine thymomas), four resections of paravertebral neurinomas, one ectopic mediastinal parathyroidectomy, one resection of a lymphangioma, one resection of ectopic goitre, one resection of lymph node metastasis of thyroid carcinoma and three oesophageal procedures (one leiomyoma, one traction diverticulum and one foregut cyst).

Nanoscale roughness on metal surfaces can increase tip-enhanced Raman scattering by an order of magnitude.

We studied the influence of nanosteps on signal intensity in gap-mode tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). A benzenethiol monolayer adsorbed on an Au substrate was investigated. The correlation between the TERS signal and the local topography on the substrate shows that a 2 nm high sharp step on the Au surface can significantly increase the enhancement.

Towards rapid nanoscale chemical analysis using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy with Ag-coated dielectric tips.

The influence of dielectric substrates on the Raman scattering activities of Ag overlayers has been investigated. Materials with low refractive indices, such as SiO(2), SiO(x) and AlF(3), were found to provide suitable supporting platforms for Ag films to give strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering for dye molecules when illuminated at 488 nm. This finding was then extended to tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS).

Basic fibroblast growth factor stimulates matrix metalloproteinase-13 via the molecular cross-talk between the mitogen-activated protein kinases and protein kinase Cdelta pathways in human adult articular chondrocytes.

Excessive release of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) during loading and/or injury of the cartilage matrix may contribute to the onset or progression of osteoarthritis. This pathological role may be related to the ability of bFGF to decrease proteoglycan synthesis and to antagonize the activity of anabolic growth factors in cartilage such as insulin-like growth factor-1 and bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7 or OP-1). Matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13), a catabolic cartilage-degrading enzyme, is dramatically up-regulated by inflammatory cytokines or by fibronectin fragments in articular chondrocytes.

[Surgical treatment of coxofemoral luxation in two cattle].

A three-week-old Holstein Friesian calf and a 20-month-old Jersey heifer were referred to the Department of Farm Animals, University of Zurich, because of coxofemoral luxation. Both animals were moderately lame on the affected hind limb, which was swollen in the hip region and appeared to be adducted and shorter than the contralateral normal hind limb. Radiographs of the affected hips confirmed craniodorsal displacement of the femur.

A comparison of outcomes after robotic open extended thymectomy for myasthenia gravis.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the surgical approach on surgical and neurologic outcomes after extended thymectomy for myasthenia gravis.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of the institutional extended thymectomies for myasthenia gravis within the last decade was performed. Patients of group A (open access by total median sternotomy; n=10; 1996-2002) and of group B (video assisted thoracoscopic surgery approach with the da Vinci robotic system; n=9; 2003-2006) did not differ with regard to gender distribution, age, body mass index, American Association of Anaesthetists score and Osserman classification of myasthenia gravis.

Indicators of activity-friendly communities: an evidence-based consensus process.

Background: Regular physical activity, even at modest intensities, is associated with many health benefits. Most Americans, however, do not engage in the recommended levels. As practitioners seek ways to increase population rates of physical activity, interventions and advocacy efforts are being targeted to the community level.

Increased accumulation of superficial zone protein (SZP) in articular cartilage in response to bone morphogenetic protein-7 and growth factors.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), such as BMP-7, growth factors, and cytokines, in the accumulation of superficial zone protein (SZP) in bovine articular cartilage. Calf superficial articular cartilage discs and chondrocytes were obtained for explant and monolayer culture systems, respectively. Dose- and time-dependent actions of BMP-7 on SZP accumulation were investigated in both explant and monolayer culture systems.

Cyclooxygenase regulates cell surface expression of CXCR3/1-storing granules in human CD4+ T cells.

Efficient migration of CD4+ T cells into sites of infection/inflammation is a prerequisite to protective immunity. Inappropriate recruitment, on the other hand, contributes to inflammatory pathologies. The chemokine/chemokine receptor system is thought to orchestrate T cell homing.

The effects of male age on sperm DNA damage in healthy non-smokers.

Background: The trend for men to have children at older age raises concerns that advancing age may increase the production of genetically defective sperm, increasing the risks of transmitting germ-line mutations.

Methods: We investigated the associations between male age and sperm DNA damage and the influence of several lifestyle factors in a healthy non-clinical group of 80 non-smokers (mean age: 46.4 years, range: 22-80 years) with no known fertility problems using the sperm Comet analyses.

Characteristics of physical activity levels among trail users in a U.S. national sample.

Background: The Task Force on Community Preventive Services strongly recommends environmental interventions that include enhanced access to opportunities for physical activity, such as walking and cycling trails. Although accumulating evidence indicates that trails can be effective in increasing physical activity, little is known about trail users.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of a national sample of 3717 adults from the HealthStyles and ConsumerStyles surveys using logistic regression to determine physical activity patterns and sociodemographic correlates related to trail use, and to identify support regarding trail development policies.

Muévete Bogotá: promoting physical activity with a network of partner companies.

In 1998 the mayor's office and the District Institute for Sports and Recreation created Muévete Bogotá, a physical activity and health promotion programme for the capital city of Colombia. Muévete means to move or to be active, and this campaign to promote physical activity was designed to improve the health and quality of life of the citizens of Bogotá through regular physical activity. The programme is based on the 1995 recommendations on physical activity of the U.

A framework for evaluating community-based physical activity promotion programmes in Latin America.

A growing interest in promoting physical activity through multi-sectoral community-based programmes has highlighted the need for effective programme evaluation. Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, an international workgroup of behavioural, medical, public health and other scientists and practitioners endorsed the principle of careful evaluation of all programmes and in a consensus process developed the Rio de Janeiro Recommendations for Evaluation of Physical Activity Interventions". Among these recommendations and principles were that when possible, evaluation should 'built into' the programme from the beginning.

Functional redundancy of NSCL-1 and NeuroD during development of the petrosal and vestibulocochlear ganglia.

To study the role of different members of the bHLH gene family for sensory organ development we have generated NSCL-1 and NeuroD compound-mutant mice. Double homozygous animals were characterized by a more severe reduction of the petrosal and vestibulocochlear ganglia than NeuroD-knockout mice. The more severe reduction of the petrosal and vestibulocochlear ganglia in double-knockout mice indicates overlapping functions of the two genes during neuronal development.

Quantitative effects of male age on sperm motion.

Background: Semen quality is associated with fertility status, but there is little quantitative information on risk factors that affect semen quality, especially in non-clinical populations. Advancing male age has been associated with a decline in semen quality, with the largest effect being on sperm motility. However, there is little quantitative data on the specific components of sperm motion that are affected by male age.
