Along with the long-term sequelae of preterm birth for general health, oral health is potentially influenced by prematurity due to developmental and behavioral peculiarities. This study aimed to compare oral health parameters in the mixed dentition of prematurely and full-term born children. Dental caries, developmental defects of enamel (DDE), and gingival inflammation were assessed in 7-to-9-year-old children ( = 38) born preterm (PT) compared to a matched control group born full-term (FT) in Germany.

This meta-analytic review of randomised controlled trials aimed to explore the effect of medications on symptoms of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents with ADHD. Insaka: mobile phone support groups for adolescent pregnant women living with HIV.

Background: Mobile phone-based interventions have been demonstrated in different settings to overcome barriers to accessing critical psychosocial support. In this study, we aimed to assess the acceptability and feasibility of a phone-based, peer-to-peer support group intervention for adolescent pregnant women aged 15-24 years living with HIV in Zambia.

Popeye domain containing1 (Popdc1), also named Bves, is an evolutionary conserved membrane protein. Despite its high expression level in the heart little is known about its membrane localization and cardiac functions. The study examined the hypothesis that Popdc1 might be associated with the caveolae and play a role in myocardial ischemia tolerance.

A histone deacetylase inhibitory prodrug - butyroyloxymethyl diethyl phosphate - protects the heart and cardiomyocytes against ischemia injury.

Butyroyloxymethyl diethylphosphate (AN-7) is a prodrug of butyric acid effective in reducing cardiotoxicity caused by chemotherapy. In this study, we tested whether AN-7 protects the heart and cardiomyocytes against ischemia injury. A single oral dose of AN-7 was given to mice or rats.

Monitoring of the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin: development of immunochemical methods for its purification and detection.

The present research focused on the development of an immunoassay and an immunochemical sol-gel-based immunoaffinity purification (IAP) method for purification and detection of the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indomethacin (IMT). A polyclonal antibody (Ab) for IMT was generated, and two sensitive microplate assays for the detection of IMT were developed (termed OV and HRP formats), based on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The limits of detection of the assays were 15 ± 1.

Congestive heart failure, a complex disease of heterogeneous etiology, involves alterations in the expression of multiple genes. The Popeye domain-containing (POPDC) family of three novel muscle-restricted genes (POPDC1-3) is evolutionarily conserved and developmentally regulated. In mice, POPDC1 has been shown to play an important role in skeletal and cardiac muscles subjected to injury or stress.

The histone deacetylase inhibitor butyroyloxymethyl diethylphosphate (AN-7) protects normal cells against toxicity of anticancer agents while augmenting their anticancer activity.

The histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACI) butyroyloxymethyl diethylphosphate (AN-7) has been shown to synergize doxorubicin (Dox) anticancer activity while attenuating its cardiotoxicity. In this study we further explored the selectivity of AN-7's action in several cancer and normal cells treated with anticancer agents. The cells studied were murine mammary 4T1, human breast T47D and glioblastoma U251 cancer cell lines, neonatal rat cardiomyocytes, cardiofibroblasts and astrocytes, and immortalized cardiomyocyte H9C2 cells.

Monitoring of progestins: development of immunochemical methods for purification and detection of levonorgestrel.

A polyclonal antibody (Ab) for the progestin levonorgestrel (LNG) was generated, and immunochemical assays for its detection, clean-up and concentration were developed. A highly specific microplate diagnostic assay for the detection of LNG was developed that used the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The LNG ELISA developed was sensitive and reproducible; it exhibited I(50) and I(20) values of 3.

The Popdc gene family in the rat: molecular cloning, characterization and expression analysis in the heart and cultured cardiomyocytes.

Three Popeye domain-containing (Popdc 1-3) family-members are known in vertebrates. Their exact function is as yet unknown although involvement in cell adhesion has been suggested. We report herein sequencing of the rat Popdc 1-3 cDNAs that show high homology to other vertebrate orthologs and are expressed primarily in the heart and skeletal muscles.

Expression of procollagen C-proteinase enhancer-1 in the remodeling rat heart is stimulated by aldosterone.

Excessive collagen deposition is a common complication of myocardial infarction that causes progressive heart disease. Several pro-fibrotic cytokines and hormones, including aldosterone, control this process. Procollagen processing by procollagen C-proteinase(s) is critical for collagen deposition and is potentiated by procollagen C-proteinase enhancer proteins (PCPEs).

Expression of procollagen C-proteinase enhancer in cultured rat heart fibroblasts: evidence for co-regulation with type I collagen.

Procollagen processing by procollagen C-proteinase (PCP) is an important step in collagen deposition. This reaction is stimulated by another glycoprotein, known as PCP enhancer. The objective of this study was to identify factors that regulate the expression of PCP enhancer in cardiac fibroblasts and examine possible correlation with collagen expression.

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) appear in greater frequency among relatives of patients and in individuals with DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) or velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS). A majority of these patients and part of the apparently nonsyndromic CHD patients with conotruncal defects manifest hemizygous deletions within chromosome 22q11.2 (del22q11).

Two cases of Mycobacterium microti derived tuberculosis in HIV-negative immunocompetent patients.

We describe two cases of Mycobacterium microti infection causing pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in HIV-seronegative immunocompetent patients in Germany. The isolates were identified as M. microti of the llama and vole types, according to spoligotype patterns.

Does managing behavioral health care services increase the cost of providing medical care?

This study examined the possibility that managing behavioral health care services achieves savings by cost shifting--by denying care or impeding access to care--and in that way encouraging patients to seek needed behavioral health care in the medical care system. In 1993, a large industrial company carved out employee behavioral health care from its unmanaged, indemnity medical care benefits and offered employees an enhanced benefit package through a managed behavioral health care company. This study compared the use and cost of behavioral health care and medical care services for two years before the carve-out and for three years afterward.

Adenosine stimulates ANP expression in cultured ventricular cardiomyocytes.

Adenosine protects the ischemic myocardium by coronary vasodilation and the depression of heart rate and contractility, improving myocardial energy balance. Adenosine effects on the myocardium are mediated predominantly by the type A1 receptors. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), a vasodilator and regulator of blood volume, is secreted from either atrial or ventricular myocytes in response to cellular distention.

The myocardial profile of the cytosolic isozymes of creatine kinase is apparently not related to cyanosis in congenital heart disease.

Background: CKMB, the cardiac-specific heterodimer of cytosolic creatine-kinase (CK), is developmentally and physiologically regulated, tissue hypoxia being a proposed regulator. In patients with cyanotic heart disease the myocardium is perfused with partially saturated blood. We questioned whether the myocardium of cyanotic subjects contains higher proportions of CKMB.

Mental health/medical care cost offsets: opportunities for managed care.

Health services researchers have long observed that outpatient mental health treatment sometimes leads to a reduction in unnecessary or excessive general medical care expenditures. Such reductions, or cost offsets, have been found following mental health treatment of distressed elderly medical inpatients, some patients as they develop major medical illnesses, primary care outpatients with multiple unexplained somatic complaints, and nonelderly adults with alcoholism. In this paper we argue that managed care has an opportunity to capture these medical care cost savings by training utilization managers to make mental health services more accessible to patients whose excessive use of medical care is related to psychological factors.

Cardiomyocytes in culture--a model to study the cellular actions of amiodarone.

The extensive use of amiodarone as an anti-arrhythmic drug is hampered by numerous side effects and by insufficient knowledge of its cellular action. The use of cell cultures for studying the mechanism of amiodarone action has been questioned, since available information has indicated that the doses employed for the experiments induce cell damage. We have defined conditions to obtain the amiodarone effect on cardiac cells in culture with no detectable damage.
