Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) is the foremost causative factor of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare yet highly aggressive skin cancer. Although the evaluation of circulating IgG antibodies against Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) LT/sT oncoproteins is clinically useful for MCC diagnosis/prognosis, a limited number of assays for identifying such antibodies have been developed. Herein, a novel indirect immunoassay with synthetic epitopes/mimotopes of MCPyV oncoproteins was computationally designed and experimentally validated on control sera and sera from healthy individuals and MCC patients.

Chronic immunosuppression strongly affects solid organ transplanted (SOT) patients' immune system by promoting immune evasion strategies and reactivations of viruses with oncogenic potential, ultimately leading to cancer onset. In this scenario, an oncological Surveillance Protocol integrated with biobanking of peripheral blood samples and evaluation of immunovirological and molecular parameters was activated for SOT patients at CRO-IRCCS Aviano, with the aim of identifying suitable biomarkers of cancer development.

Materials And Methods: In the period 2003-2009, 1616 HNSCC patients were diagnosed in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Northeastern Italy, including 462 oral, 346 oropharyngeal, 212 hypopharyngeal, and 596 laryngeal cancers. Clinical information, including date and type of first treatment, and follow-up were retrieved from the regional Cancer Registry and a population-based health database collecting comprehensive health information on people living in the Region.
This study aimed to evaluate plasma concentration of selected cancer-associated inflammatory and immune-modulated cytokines in HIV+ patients with advanced Kaposi sarcoma (KS), and to explore candidate biomarkers capable of predicting clinical outcome in response to chemotherapy (CT) plus combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).Thirty-seven plasma cytokines/chemokines were assessed by Luminex technology in 27 consecutive HIV+ KS patients, followed-up during CT and cART of maintenance (m-cART). Associations between plasma concentration of biomarkers and patient clinical response to m-cART were evaluated by means of Hazard Ratios (HRs) and corresponding 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs).

However, increased survival is associated with increased prevalence of comorbidities, such as cardiovascular disease, hepatic and renal disease. Kidney disease, including HIV-associated nephropathy, acute renal failure and chronic kidney disease, represents one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality, especially if associated to other risk factors, i.

The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in the mid-1990s has transformed Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection into a chronic disease. HIV-infected patients are living longer and are facing several non-AIDS-associated morbidities related with aging, including diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, osteopenia and fragility fractures. The prevalence of bone disease is higher among HIV-infected subjects.

Background And Objectives: This paper describes the Italian Cooperative Group on AIDS and Tumours (GICAT) experience on HIV-positive patients with SCCA.
In the HAART era Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) remains the second most frequent tumor in HIV-infected patients worldwide, and it has become the most common cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa. In western countries the risk for KS in men having sex with men (MSM) is 5 to 10 times higher compared to other groups of individuals practicing other HIV-risk behaviors. Patients with KS in Sub-Saharan Africa have very high tumor burdens and rapid disease progression with a diminished life expectancy of less than 6 months.

All patients were relapsed/progressed during highly active antiretroviral therapy, administered as primary antineoplastic therapy. An objective response, all partial remissions, occurred in 75% of patients.

We describe a patient affected concomitantly by sarcoidosis and KS. HHV8 sequences were detected with PCR only on KS lesions, whereas sarcoid tissues did not harbor HHV8 DNA.

To evaluate the impact of chemotherapy plus HAART on the clinical course of patients with HIV-related, systemic, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (HIV-NHL), the authors compared retrospectively a group of 24 patients with HIV-NHL who were treated with the cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP) chemotherapy regimen plus HAART with a group of 80 patients who were treated with CHOP chemotherapy or a CHOP-like regimen (i.e.

The diagnostic examinations made in South America had shown pulmonary granulomatous lesions and an osteolytic pattern of the left knee that had been considered suspect of malignant disease with an indication for limb amputation. With the aid of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and culture examination we diagnosed an osteomyelitis by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and initiated therapy with itraconazole, 400 mg per day, reduced to 200 mg per day after 2 months.
