Investigating how trophic interactions influence the β-diversity of meta-communities is of paramount importance to understanding the processes shaping biodiversity distribution. Here, we apply a statistical method for inferring the strength of spatial dependencies between pairs of species groups. Using simulated community data generated from a multi-trophic model, we showed that this method can approximate biotic interactions in multi-trophic communities based on β-diversity patterns across groups.

The Nep1 (Emg1) SPOUT-class methyltransferase is an essential ribosome assembly factor and the human Bowen-Conradi syndrome (BCS) is caused by a specific Nep1(D86G) mutation. We recently showed in vitro that Methanocaldococcus jannaschii Nep1 is a sequence-specific pseudouridine-N1-methyltransferase. Here, we show that in yeast the in vivo target site for Nep1-catalyzed methylation is located within loop 35 of the 18S rRNA that contains the unique hypermodification of U1191 to 1-methyl-3-(3-amino-3-carboxypropyl)-pseudouri-dine (m1acp3Ψ).

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) plays an important role in the regulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition by stimulating the synthesis of individual matrix proteins like tenascin and fibronectin. Cholesteatoma shows significant changes in the ECM, supporting the view of a disturbed cell-matrix interaction. The purpose of our present study was to evaluate the distribution of TGF-beta in comparison to the deposition of tenascin, fibronectin, and collagen as major components of the ECM in cholesteatoma (n = 12) by means of histochemistry and immunohistochemistry.
