The unabated rise of antibiotic resistance has raised the specter of a post-antibiotic era and underscored the importance of developing new classes of antibiotics. The relacidines are a recently discovered group of nonribosomal lipopeptide antibiotics that show promising activity against Gram-negative pathogens and share structural similarities with brevicidine and laterocidine. While the first reports of the relacidines indicated that they possess a C-terminal five-amino acid macrolactone, an N-terminal lipid tail, and an overall positive charge, no stereochemical configuration was assigned, thereby precluding a full structure determination.

Self-assembled π-conjugated nanoparticles with tunable optical characteristics are appealing for sensing and imaging applications due to their intrinsic fluorescence, supramolecular organization and dynamics. Here we report on the facile synthesis of fluorene benzothiadiazole co-oligomers in which structural backbone alterations induce bathochromically shifted optical characteristics. Targeted temperature management (TTM) might improve outcome of patients with severe subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in which vasospasm, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and increased intracranial pressure (ICP) are frequent and severe complications. A series of patients ( = 3) with severe aneurysmatic SAH were treated by TTM if they developed ICP crisis and/or severe vasospasm diagnosed by angiography. Once these complications were detected, body core temperature (BCT) was rapidly decreased to 35°C or 33°C, if necessary.

The cellular uptake of self-assembled biological and synthetic matter results from their multicomponent properties. Interest in bay-substituted perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic diimides (PDIs) for solution-based applications is growing due to their improved solubility and altered optical and electronic properties compared to unsubstituted PDIs. Synthetic routes to 1,12-bay-substituted PDIs have been very demanding due to issues with steric hindrance and poor regioselectivity. Here we report a simple one-step regioselective and high yielding synthesis of a 1,12-dihydroxylated PDI derivative that can subsequently be alkylated in a straightforward fashion to produce nonplanar 1,12-dialkoxy PDIs.

This article summarises the current evidence on the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) with the use of antipsychotics. An increasing number of observational studies indicate an elevated risk of VTE in antipsychotic drug users. Although the use of certain antipsychotics has been associated with VTE, current data can neither conclusively verify differences in occurrence rates of VTE between first- and second-generation antipsychotics or between individual compounds, nor identify which antipsychotic drugs have the lowest risk of VTE.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) was used to analyze a series of synthetic organic ions bearing fixed multiple charges. Despite the multiple intrinsic charges, only singly charged ions were recorded in each case.
