Many shallow coastal bays have been closed off from the sea to mitigate the risk of flooding, resulting in coastal reservoir lakes with artificial armoured shorelines. Often these enclosed ecosystems show a persistent decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is likely reflected in their food-web structure. We therefore hypothesize that the food webs of coastal reservoir lakes with armoured shorelines (1) consist of relatively few species with a low food-web connectance and short food chains, and (2) are mainly fuelled by autochthonous organic matter produced in the pelagic zone.

Inhalation is the preferred route of delivery for anti-asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) drugs. The use of this route has demonstrated efficacy in these and other conditions, it offers rapid onset of action, and is associated with minimal systemic exposure, thereby reducing the risk of adverse effects. Therefore, the current brief covers an interesting collection of inhaler action modes, shedding light on their molecular mechanisms and clinical applications for anti-asthma, COPD and antibacterial inhalation therapy.

The synthesis of a new triazacyclophane scaffold (TACO scaffold) containing three selectively deprotectable amines is described. The TACO scaffold is conformationally more constrained than our frequently used TAC scaffold, due to introduction of a substituent on the para position of the benzoic acid hinge, which prevents ring flipping and makes it more attractive than the TAC scaffold for preparation of artificial receptor molecules or for mimicking discontinuous epitopes toward protein mimics when more preorganization is required.

Introduction: A multi-region consultation process designed to generate locally produced regional and global research priorities on mental and neurological health in low- and middle-income countries.

Methods: Between 2003 and 2005, priority setting exercises on MNH research, using the systematic combined approach matrix (CAM) were held in the six regions of the developing world. One regional meeting per region was convened, and a global meeting was organized before and after the regional exercises.

The ability to interpret collected data across international mental health communities often proves to be difficult. The following paper reports on the use and appropriateness of focus group methodology in helping to clarify issues that could help substantiate data collection and comparison across different cultures and regions. Field tests of the focus group methodology were undertaken in different regions and this paper describes an overview of the final field test in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Article Synopsis
  • - Mental disorders are increasingly recognized as a significant global health issue, with many countries lacking effective policies for intervention despite available resources.
  • - The WHO and World Bank stress the importance of accessible tools for developing mental health policies, leading to the creation of a mental health policy template by the International Consortium for Mental Health Services.
  • - This template, refined through international research and expert consultations, will be tested in developing countries to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing mental health policies.

Article Synopsis
  • The World Bank's 1993 report highlighted that mental and neurological disorders contribute over 15% of the global disease burden, surpassing even cancer in this regard.
  • Despite increased attention on mental health issues internationally, developing countries still face significant gaps in treatment for these disorders.
  • The International Consortium on Mental Health Policy and Services has been established to improve mental health systems in low-income countries through collaboration, research, and the development of guidelines for effective mental health policies.

Parthenogenesis is often thought to constitute an evolutionary dead end as compared with sexual reproduction because genetic recombination is limited or nonexistent in parthenogenetic populations. Yet there are many species to demonstrate that parthenogenesis can initially be extremely successful under certain environmental conditions. In this study we used microsatellite markers to investigate the genetic structure of four natural populations of the neotropical thelytokous parthenogenetic ant Platythyrea punctata.

The 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH) derivatization method mainly used for the determination of airborne formaldehyde was extended for acetaldehyde, acetone, 2-butanone, and cyclohexanone, the next four carbonyl compounds of industrial importance. Sampling devices and sampling conditions were adjusted for the respective limit value regulations. Analytical reliability criteria were established and compared to those of other recommended methods.
