A new technique that enables frequency-resolved cavity ringdown absorption spectra to be obtained over a large optical bandwidth by a single laser shot is described. The technique, ringdown spectral photography (RSP), simultaneously employs two key principles to record the time and frequency response of an optical cavity along orthogonal axes of a CCD array detector. In-line holographic particle image velocimetry for turbulent flows.

A holographic system has been developed to measure the velocity field in three-dimensional flow regions. The system records the position of small tracer particles on two in-line holograms of the flow obtained simultaneously. Two exposures are recorded on each hologram.

Biomarkers of oxidative stress and DNA damage in agricultural workers: a pilot study.

Oxidative stress and DNA damage have been proposed as mechanisms linking pesticide exposure to health effects such as cancer and neurological diseases. A study of pesticide applicators and farmworkers was conducted to examine the relationship between organophosphate pesticide exposure and biomarkers of oxidative stress and DNA damage. Urine samples were analyzed for OP metabolites and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Engaging partners to initiate evaluation efforts: tactics used and lessons learned from the prevention research centers program.

Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Prevention Research Centers (PRC) Program underwent a 2-year evaluation planning project using a participatory process that allowed perspectives from the national community of PRC partners to be expressed and reflected in a national logic model.

Context: The PRC Program recognized the challenge in developing a feasible, useable, and relevant evaluation process for a large, diverse program. To address the challenge, participatory and utilization-focused evaluation models were used.

A portable forensic genetic analysis system consisting of a microfluidic device for amplification and separation of short tandem repeat (STR) fragments as well as an instrument for chip operation and four-color fluorescence detection has been developed. The microdevice performs polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in a 160-nL chamber and capillary electrophoresis (CE) in a 7-cm-long separation channel. The instrumental design integrates PCR thermal cycling, electrophoretic separation, pneumatic valve fluidic control, and four-color laser excited fluorescence detection.

Definitions of sedentary in physical-activity-intervention trials: a summary of the literature.

This review describes the definitions of sedentary used to screen community-dwelling adults in physical-activity-intervention trials published from 2000 to 2005. Results of 42 trials showed that definitions of sedentary varied from <20 to <150 min/week of physical activity, and few reported the type (work, household, or leisure) or intensity of activity that was used to screen participants. The range of "sedentary" samples makes it difficult to compare trial results or generalize findings.

Motivational interviewing to increase physical activity in long-term cancer survivors: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Physical activity can confer many benefits on cancer survivors, including relief of persistent symptoms related to cancer treatment.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of a motivational interviewing (MI) intervention on increasing physical activity (Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors questionnaire) and improving aerobic fitness (6-minute walk), health (Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36), and fatigue (Schwartz Cancer Fatigue Scale) in cancer survivors. A secondary purpose was to evaluate whether the effect of MI on physical activities depended on self-efficacy.

Neurobehavioral performance of adult and adolescent agricultural workers.

There are many occupational hazards associated with working in agriculture including risk of injury and exposure to pesticides. Research examining neurobehavioral effects of pesticide exposure have focused primarily on the acute effects in adults working in agriculture. Organophosphate poisoned populations have shown a consistent pattern of deficits when compared to a non-exposed or non-poisoned population on measures of motor speed and coordination, sustained attention, and information processing speed.

Genotypic changes in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 protease associated with reduced susceptibility and virologic response to the protease inhibitor tipranavir.

Tipranavir is a novel, nonpeptidic protease inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) with activity against clinical HIV-1 isolates from treatment-experienced patients. HIV-1 genotypic and phenotypic data from phase II and III clinical trials of tipranavir with protease inhibitor-experienced patients were analyzed to determine the association of protease mutations with reduced susceptibility and virologic response to tipranavir. Specific protease mutations were identified based on stepwise multiple-regression analyses of phase II study data sets.

Maintaining excellence in physician nurse communication with CPOE: A nursing informatics team approach.

Designing and implementing CPOE systems is difficult, presenting many challenges to overcome related to workflow redesign. As part of the Mayo Clinic Arizona CPOE design and implementation, it was recognized that physicians would be placing inpatient orders from multiple locations; therefore nurses no longer would have the usual visual clues to identify new physician orders. This could easily lead to a delay in implementing orders that require immediate action.

Schizophrenia, neurobiology and the methodology of systemic modeling.

Progress in the pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia is dependent on the extent of our understanding of the brain as the basis of this disease. Detailed examination of neurobiological data shows that only a systemic approach will integrate this wealth of information. For this reason, the steps involved in model building should be clarified, as further progress will necessitate closer cooperation between neuropsychiatrists, neurobiologists and systems scientists.

Escherichia coli excretes the catecholate siderophore enterobactin in response to iron deprivation. While the mechanisms underlying enterobactin biosynthesis and ferric enterobactin uptake and utilization are widely understood, nearly nothing is known about how enterobactin is exported from the cell. Mutant and high-performance liquid chromatography analyses demonstrated that the outer membrane channel tunnel protein TolC but none of the respective seven resistance nodulation cell division (RND) proteins CusA, AcrB, AcrD, AcrF, MdtF (YhiV), or the twin RND MdtBC (YegNO) was essential for enterobactin export across the outer membrane.

Neurobehavioral performance in preschool children from agricultural and non-agricultural communities in Oregon and North Carolina.

Organophosphate (OP) pesticides produce acute toxic effects but little is known about low-level chronic exposures. Latino children of agricultural workers have a high risk of exposure to pesticides because of the close proximity of their homes to fields where pesticides are applied and from take-home exposure. Neurobehavioral performance of preschool children from agricultural (AG) communities was compared to performance of those from non-agricultural (Non-AG) communities in Oregon and North Carolina.

American Podiatric Medical Association Best Walking City Competition, 2004.

In 2004, the American Podiatric Medical Association conducted its third annual "Best Walking City Competition." This study improved on the 2002 and 2003 studies by increasing the number of cities competing for the title of "Best Walking City" and by including a variety of new measures of walking activities to provide a more comprehensive and equitable basis for comparing cities. The top 20 best walking cities in 2004 were identified from among the 200 largest cities across the United States.

Microfluidic genetic analysis with an integrated a-Si:H detector.

We have developed an integrated hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) fluorescence detector for microfluidic genetic analysis. It consists of a half-ball lens, a ZnS/YF3 multilayer optical interference filter with a pinhole, and an annular a-Si:H PIN photodiode allowing the laser excitation to pass up through the central aperture in the photodiode and the filter. Microfluidic separations of multiplex PCR products generated from methicillin-resistant/sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA/MSSA) DNA on microfluidic capillary electrophoresis (CE) devices are successfully detected with the integrated detector.

Variation in organophosphate pesticide metabolites in urine of children living in agricultural communities.

Children of migrant farmworkers are at increased risk of exposure to organophosphate pesticides because of "carry-home" transport processes and residential location. Although this at-risk status is generally recognized, few available reports describe the extent of this exposure among agricultural communities. We quantified dialkyl phosphate (DAP) levels in serial samples of urine from 176 children, 2-6 years of age, in three Oregon communities hosting differing agricultural industries: pears, cherries, and fruit berries.

High-throughput single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis on a microfabricated capillary array electrophoresis device.

A high-density 384-lane microfabricated capillary array electrophoresis device is evaluated for high-throughput single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. A delayed back bias direct electrokinetic injection scheme is used to provide better than 10-bp resolution with an 8.0-cm effective separation length.

Development and evaluation of a microdevice for amino acid biomarker detection and analysis on Mars.

The Mars Organic Analyzer (MOA), a microfabricated capillary electrophoresis (CE) instrument for sensitive amino acid biomarker analysis, has been developed and evaluated. The microdevice consists of a four-wafer sandwich combining glass CE separation channels, microfabricated pneumatic membrane valves and pumps, and a nanoliter fluidic network. The portable MOA instrument integrates high voltage CE power supplies, pneumatic controls, and fluorescence detection optics necessary for field operation.
