The Austrian Breast Cancer Group (ABC) consisting of more than 60 participating centers in Austria has randomized more than 5800 patients in 11 randomized trials since 1984. At present, roughly 30% of all patients with the diagnosis primary breast cancer are accrued in protocols throughout the country. Due to specific activities, the breast conservation rate raised from an initial 20% to more than 60% in the last years.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA report concerning the follow-up examinations of the 14 patients with rectum cancer from the University Surgical Clinic in Innsbruck, Austria, who from 1961-1974 were operated on using Hochenegg's technique. Interestingly enough, it was noticed that when the height of the anastomosis was less than 5 cm from the anal ring, a partial incontinence appeared (in 3 of the 14 patients) and when it was more than 5 cm from the anal ring, a total continence was assured. A relapse was observed three times in the tumor cases type C2 and D (Duke).

According to our own experience and recent publications we cannot support the preservations of the rectum. Nevertheless, in order to preserve continence, we peel off the cylinder of the mucosa of the rest of the rectum (Devine und Ravitch).
