Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common pediatric liver disease and can progress to liver fibrosis. Latino adolescents have increased MASLD and fibrosis risk. While fibrosis is diagnosed by biopsy or imaging, more accessible, noninvasive, and economical screening methods are needed.

Background: Exposure to ambient air pollutants has emerged as a risk for metabolic-dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

Objectives: We sought to examine associations between short-term (prior month) and long-term (prior year) ambient air pollution exposure with hepatic fat fraction (HFF) and liver stiffness in Latino youth with obesity. A secondary aim was to investigate effect modification by patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3) genotype and liver disease severity.

Objectives: To develop and validate an Electronic Frailty Index based on electronic data routinely collected in the HMO.

Study Design And Setting: A retrospective cohort of the HMO members.

: In the therapeutic strategy of rectal cancer, radiotherapy has consolidated its important position and frequent use in current practice due to its indications as neoadjuvant, adjuvant, definitive, or palliative treatment. In recent years, total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) has been established as the preferred regimen compared to concurrent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT). In relation to better outcomes, the percentage of patients who achieved pathological complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant treatment is higher in the case of TNT.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common paediatric liver disease. Latinos have high MASLD risk due to 50% prevalence of GG genotype of PNPLA3. Our primary aim was to evaluate associations between dietary carbohydrates/sugars and liver stiffness in Latino adolescents with obesity.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is on the rise among youth. Identifying biomarkers of NAFLD progression/risk can aid in prevention efforts.

Aims: This pilot study investigated associations of two endotoxin biomarkers-lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) and anti-endotoxin core immunoglobulin G (EndoCab)-with markers of NAFLD among 99 Latino/Latina adolescents (11-19 years) with obesity.

Alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) refers to liver injury from alcoholic intake that usually occurs after years of heavy alcohol abuse. Frequent, heavy alcohol consumption causes hepatic inflammation, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Some patients develop severe AH, which carries high short-term mortality and is the second most common reason for adult liver transplants (LTs) worldwide.

A healthy lifestyle among the elderly is associated with improved health. However, many older adults are not engaging in such behavior. The purpose of the study was to develop an individually tailored online/telephone program to increase healthy lifestyle behaviors among community-dwelling elderly people.

Objective: Psychosocial factors are correlated with the risk of breast cancer, by the lack of externalization of feelings and aggressive tendencies, or with a negative prognosis, by the presence of a high level of stress and reduced coping abilities. Impairment of psychological status should be assessed early to identify quantifiable psychooncological changes, such as depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. These indicators, measured in this study, may become psychometric markers for predicting the existence of the neoplastic process, prior to histopathological evaluations.

In the context of the traumas suffered by patients following the oncological diagnosis and the expectation of the surgical intervention, it is important to unitary and multidimensional identify the psychological status, using a single interview structured to cover these psychological vulnerabilities. The overall psychological picture can help the psycho-oncologist to adapt his psychotherapeutic interventions to relieve the stress caused by the oncological diagnosis and specific treatment. 58 patients with a breast cancer diagnosis and 61 patients with breast lumps diagnosis who were waiting for the histopathological result, received several scales for assessing emotional distress, the level self-esteem, depression, anxiety and cognitive dysfunctions levels.

Introduction: Depression represents a public health issue because it significantly increases the risk of disabilities and premature mortality, decreases the quality of life, and increases the costs of care. The incomplete remissions favor the aggravation of neurobiological dysfunctions and pathogenesis of severe somatic comorbidities. The etiopathogenic mechanisms of depression are complex and involve multisystemic risk factors (genetic, neuroanatomic, neurobiochemical, neuroendocrine and psychosocial).

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic brought rapid expansion of pediatric telehealth to maintain patient access to care while decreasing COVID-19 community spread. We designed a retrospective, serial, cross-sectional study to investigate if telehealth implementation at an academic pediatric practice led to disparities in health care access. Significant differences were found in pre-COVID-19 versus during COVID-19 patient demographics.

Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals have a different gender identity than the sex they were assigned at birth. Despite an increase in provider awareness of TGNC health over the past decade, no original research or societal guidelines exist on TGNC patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We review TGNC IBD cases in the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Pediatric IBD Program and in the literature.

Gastric cancer currently represents one of the most important public health problems. Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of strong correlations between the vegetative nervous system and the role it plays in the initiation of the oncogenetic process and the progression of cancer. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the involvement of the sympathetic and parasympathetic vegetative nervous system in the evolution of gastric cancer, according to the stage of tumor differentiation.

Background: From the moment a child is diagnosed as having cerebral palsy, families have to cope on a daily basis with the multifaceted challenges of life-long disability management. Family-centred service is embraced as a 'best practice' model because of accumulating evidence supporting its positive influence on parents and children's outcomes. Nevertheless, research comparing parent and provider perspectives on family-centred practices of educational service providers in education settings is scarce.

Macrocyclic lactone (ML) endectocides are used as chemoprophylaxis for heartworm infection (Dirofilaria immitis) in dogs and cats. Claims of loss of efficacy (LOE) of ML heartworm preventives have become common in some locations in the USA. We directly tested whether resistance to MLs exists in LOE isolates of D.

Background: Strains of Dirofilaria immitis suspected of lack of efficacy (LOE) to macrocyclic lactone (ML) preventive drugs have been increasingly reported in dogs by practicing veterinarians since 2005 in the Lower Mississippi Delta region. If proven, and not controlled in the early stages, the emergence of ML drug resistance threatens to become a widespread problem in the US that may limit the effectiveness of current preventive drug treatment methods.

Methods: To validate practice reports, a statewide survey of Louisiana veterinarians was done to define the extent of the problem and identify focal 'hotspots' of reported ML LOEs using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) methods.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of lufenuron, a benzylphenylurea with ability to interfere with the formation of insect exoskeleton, as a therapeutic drug for larval echinococcosis (hydatid disease). For this purpose lufenuron, alone or in combination with albendazole, was administered to CD1 mice bearing Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cysts in the peritoneal cavity. Neither of the drugs alone was able to exert parasiticidal effects.
