Introduction: Informed consent is essential in ensuring patients' understanding of their medical condition, treatment, and potential risks. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of utilizing a video consent compared to standard consent for patient knowledge and satisfaction in selected general surgical procedures.

Methods And Procedures: We included 118 patients undergoing appendectomy, cholecystectomy, inguinal hernia repair, and fundoplication at two hospitals in Omaha, NE.

Addressing Mental Health Barriers in HIV Care Coordination Is Crucial to Providing Optimal HIV/AIDS Care.

For people with HIV (PWH) who have psychological comorbidities, effective management of mental health issues is crucial to achieving and maintaining viral suppression. Care coordination programs (CCPs) have been shown to improve outcomes across the HIV care continuum, but little research has focused on the role of care coordination in supporting the mental health of PWH. This study reports qualitative findings from the Program Refinements to Optimize Model Impact and Scalability based on Evidence (PROMISE) study, which evaluated a revised version of an HIV CCP for Ryan White Part A clients in New York City.

Scientific paper recommendation systems: a literature review of recent publications.

Scientific writing builds upon already published papers. Manual identification of publications to read, cite or consider as related papers relies on a researcher's ability to identify fitting keywords or initial papers from which a literature search can be started. The rapidly increasing amount of papers has called for automatic measures to find the desired publications, so-called paper recommendation systems.

Challenges and opportunities of telehealth digital equity to manage HIV and comorbidities for older persons living with HIV in New York State.

Background: Older persons living with HIV (PLWH) need routine healthcare to manage HIV and other comorbidities. This mixed methods study investigated digital equity, constituted as access, use and quality, of HIV and specialty telehealth services for PLWH > 50 years during the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic when services transitioned to remote care.

Methods: A survey of closed and open-ended questions was administered to 80 English (N = 63) and Spanish (N = 17) speaking PLWH receiving HIV care at an Academic Medical Center (N = 50) or a Federally Qualified Health Center (N = 30) in New York State.

Although COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory disease, it is also associated with significant pathology in the brain, heart, vasculature, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and kidneys.

Surgical education requires proficiency with multiple types of learning to create capable surgeons. This article reviews a conceptual framework of learning that starts with the biological basis of learning and how neural networks encode memory. We then focus on how information can be absorbed, organized, and recalled, discussing concepts such as cognitive load, knowledge retrieval, and adult learning.

Malignant Degeneration of Biopsy-Proven Hamartoma to Chondrosarcoma.

Pulmonary hamartomas are benign lesions that are often managed conservatively in the absence of respiratory symptoms. Increasing reports of malignant transformation question if a more aggressive treatment or surveillance practice for these lesions is warranted in adult patients. Herein, we describe a case of a 67-year-old man with a long history of pulmonary hamartoma that demonstrated malignant degeneration into spindle cell malignancy with chondromatous differentiation.

Linking radiology equipment service and medical physics survey databases.

During the performance of medical physics surveys on diagnostic imaging equipment, it is not unusual to find problems requiring service. In the work described in this article, two existing and separate databases, one for radiology equipment maintenance and the other for medical physics surveys were linked. By linking the two databases we have closed the loop in our documentation.

Web-based X-ray quality control documentation.

The department of radiology at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics has developed an equipment quality control web site. Our goal is to provide immediate access to virtually all medical physics survey data. The web site is designed to assist equipment engineers, department management and technologists.

An apparent outbreak of cutaneous papillomatosis in merino sheep in patagonia, Argentina.

A retrospective study was performed on skin samples from an outbreak of cutaneous papillomatosis in Merino sheep that occurred in 1995. The samples were processed for routine histology, electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry for papilloma viruses. Particles of approximately 55 nm diameter were found in some nuclei of the stratum granulosum cells, while immunocytochemistry gave positive staining of cell nuclei in this layer.

Characterization and toxicity to mosquito larvae of four Bacillus sphaericus strains isolated from Brazilian soils.

Four Bacillus sphaericus strains, S1, S2, S5, and L2, isolated from Brazilian soils, were found to be toxic to larvae of the mosquitoes Culex pipiens and Anopheles stephensi at a level similar to that of strain 2362 which is now used operationally. Like strain 2362, the four strains belonged to the serotype H5 and produced major proteins of apparent molecular weights of 125, 110, 56, and 43 kDa. These latter two proteins were immunologically related to toxins of the same molecular weight as B.

Leucocyte aggregation in burned patients.

Leucocyte aggregation describes one type of biophysical behaviour of white cells. To test whether this parameter is changed in burned patients, 15 burn victims were investigated immediately after admission into hospital. Cell counts and aggregation were measured and related to the prognosis of the injury.

Efficacy of maduramicin against ionophore-tolerant field isolates of coccidia in broilers.

Maduramicin ammonium was given at 2.5-8 ppm in the feed to broilers experimentally infected with coccidia recently isolated from broiler farms where ionophores had been used for several years. Infection pressure varied from mild to severe in five trials: mortality in unmedicated controls ranged from 0 to 59%, intestinal lesion scores were high, and weight gain was depressed by the infections.

Capping of immune complexes by sporozoites of Eimeria tenella.

Sporozoites of Eimeria tenella were incubated for 10, 20, or 30 min with parasite-specific monoclonal IgG antibody 3D3II from mice and then rinsed in a Tris-buffered glucose saline solution (TBGS). Some sporozoites were then incubated for 10, 20, or 30 min with ferritin- or colloidal gold-conjugated goat anti-mouse IgG antibody and then fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde and prepared for transmission (TEM) or scanning (SEM) electron microscopy.

Ultrastructural localization of monoclonal IgG antibodies for antigenic sites of Eimeria tenella oocysts, sporocysts, and sporozoites.

Monoclonal IgG antibodies against sporozoites of Eimeria tenella were obtained from the ascites fluid of BALB/c mice. Oocysts, sporocysts, and sporozoites were exposed to medium 199, normal ascites fluid, or monoclonal antibodies 1A, 9D, 3D3II, or 2G8f. Specimens were then incubated with ferritin-conjugated goat anti-mouse IgG antibody.

Delayed dermal hypersensitivity in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) immunized against Plasmodium knowlesi.

Eighteen Rhesus monkeys were immunized with a fresh or lyophilized antigen preparation obtained from erythrocytes infected with Plasmodium knowlesi. Sixteen of these monkeys showed a positive delayed hypersensitivity response when subsequently skin tested with the immunizing antigen. Ten of the 16 positive reactors survived a P, knowlesi challenge, the remaining 6 showed several indications of protection.
