Religiosity and Overall Life Satisfaction: Muslim Arabs in Israel.

Previous research suggests that greater religiosity is associated with higher levels of overall life satisfaction. However, previous research has focused primarily on Christian populations, and few have specifically analyzed Muslim populations. We examine the association between religiosity and overall life satisfaction in a Muslim population, controlling for demographic variables, socio-economic characteristics and self-rated health.

High-resolution surface water dynamics in Earth's small and medium-sized reservoirs.

Small and medium-sized reservoirs play an important role in water systems that need to cope with climate variability and various other man-made and natural challenges. Although reservoirs and dams are criticized for their negative social and environmental impacts by reducing natural flow variability and obstructing river connections, they are also recognized as important for social and economic development and climate change adaptation. Multiple studies map large dams and analyze the dynamics of water stored in the reservoirs behind these dams, but very few studies focus on small and medium-sized reservoirs on a global scale.

Dutch GPs' views on prescribing mifepristone and misoprostol: a mixed-methods study.

Background: The World Health Organization has indicated that GPs can safely and effectively provide mifepristone and misoprostol for medical termination of pregnancy (TOP). Dutch GPs are allowed to treat miscarriages with mifepristone and misoprostol, but few do so. Current Dutch abortion law prohibits GPs from prescribing these medications for medical TOP.

The patient's relationship with the General Practitioner before and after Advance Care Planning: pre/post-implementation study.

Background: General Practitioners (GPs) are central in the care of Dutch older people and in a good position to have Advance Care Planning (ACP) conversations. Interview studies reveal that the doctor-patient relationship is important when initiating ACP conversations and can also be influenced by ACP conversations. We aimed to examine the association between having an ACP conversation and the patient feeling the GP knows him or her and the patient trusting the GP and vice versa.

Selective sorption and desorption of DOM in podzol horizons - FTIR and Py-GC/MS of leachates from a column experiment.

The sorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) depends on its interaction with the soil matrix. In hydromorphic podzols, DOM reacts mainly with aluminium (Al), which is responsible for the formation of the Bh-horizon in the subsoil. In this work, we investigated whether the retention of DOM in the soil during the podzolization process is selective in relation to the molecular composition of DOM.

Emotional eating as predictor of weight loss 2 years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

There has been little agreement on the predictive value of emotional eating on weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to examine the predictive value of preoperative emotional eating, in response to clearly labelled emotions and diffuse emotions, on excess weight loss (EWL) and total weight loss (TWL) 2 years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). All participants included in this retrospective cohort study were screened for RYGB surgery by a multidisciplinary team.

Are Israelis becoming healthier? Trends in self-rated health, 2002-2018.

Background: Life expectancy at birth in Israel is steadily increasing. This raises the question whether Israelis are becoming healthier. The purpose of this study is to estimate trends in morbidity and to try to explain what causes morbidity levels to change.

Diagnostic parameters of modified two-tier testing in European patients with early Lyme disease.

Modified two-tier testing (MTTT) for Lyme borreliosis (i.e. confirmation with an EIA instead of an immunoblot) has been shown to have improved sensitivity compared with standard two-tier testing (STTT) in samples from American patients, without losing specificity.

Soil Moisture-Temperature Coupling in a Set of Land Surface Models.

The land surface controls the partitioning of water and energy fluxes and therefore plays a crucial role in the climate system. The coupling between soil moisture and air temperature, in particular, has been shown to affect the severity and occurrence of temperature extremes and heat waves. Here we study soil moisture-temperature coupling in five land surface models, focusing on the terrestrial segment of the coupling in the warm season.

Over the past four decades, the more developed countries have experienced a marked decline in the marriage rates of both men and women. The reasons for the decline remain a debated issue. Three explanations predict that the decline in marriage is a period effect, while two predict that it is a birth cohort effect.

We provide an estimate of the contribution of improvements in early-life conditions to mortality decline after age 30 in Dutch cohorts born between 1812 and 1921.

The diagnostic accuracy of serological tests for Lyme borreliosis in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Interpretation of serological assays in Lyme borreliosis requires an understanding of the clinical indications and the limitations of the currently available tests. We therefore systematically reviewed the accuracy of serological tests for the diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis in Europe.

Methods: We searched EMBASE en MEDLINE and contacted experts.

Molecular characterization of soil organic matter from native vegetation-pasture-sugarcane transitions in Brazil.

Replacing pastures (PA) with sugarcane (SG) has been deemed an agronomically feasible strategy for sugarcane expansion in Brazil. However, there are some uncertainties about the environmental impacts regarding this land use change (LUC), mainly related to soil organic matter (SOM), a key factor of environmental sustainability of Brazilian ethanol. LUC-related losses of SOM can overcome the C savings from biofuels.

Laboratory Diagnosis of Pertussis.

The introduction of vaccination in the 1950s significantly reduced the morbidity and mortality of pertussis. However, since the 1990s, a resurgence of pertussis has been observed in vaccinated populations, and a number of causes have been proposed for this phenomenon, including improved diagnostics, increased awareness, waning immunity, and pathogen adaptation. The resurgence of pertussis highlights the importance of standardized, sensitive, and specific laboratory diagnoses, the lack of which is responsible for the large differences in pertussis notifications between countries.

The Maastricht Transplant Center: clinical setting and epitope searches in HLA class II molecules: does the structural localization of a polymorphic site contribute to its immunogenicity?

Our understanding of the immunological processes influencing the clinical outcome after kidney transplantation has advanced majorly over the last few decades. However, many factors still restrict graft and patient survival. Within the Maastricht transplant center we have successfully implemented an alternative immunosuppressive regimen involving Tacrolimus monotherapy in order to minimize the adverse effects associated with long-term use of immunosuppressive drugs.

Natural killer cells and killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor polymorphisms: their role in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Natural killer (NK) cells are important effector cells in the early control of infected, malignant, and "nonself" cells. Various receptor families are involved in enabling NK cells to detect and efficiently eliminate these target cells. The killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) family is a set of receptors that are very polymorphic with regard to gene content, expression level, and expression pattern.

Nuclear transcription factor κ B activation and protein turnover adaptations in skeletal muscle of patients with progressive stages of lung cancer cachexia.

Background: Experimental models of cancer cachexia have indicated that systemic inflammation induces muscle-protein breakdown and wasting via muscular nuclear transcription factor κB (NF-κB) activation. This process may limit the efficacy of nutritional intervention.

Objectives: We assessed muscle NF-κB activity and protein turnover signaling in progressive stages of clinical lung cancer cachexia and assessed whether circulating factors can induce muscular NF-κB activity.

High Coxiella burnetii DNA load in serum during acute Q fever is associated with progression to a serologic profile indicative of chronic Q fever.

PCR is very effective in diagnosing acute Q fever in the early stages of infection, when bacterial DNA is present in the bloodstream but antibodies have not yet developed. The objective of this study was to further analyze the diagnostic value of semiquantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) in diagnosing acute Q fever in an outbreak situation. At the Jeroen Bosch Hospital, in 2009, qPCR testing for Coxiella burnetii DNA was performed for 2,715 patients suspected of having acute Q fever (positive, n = 385; negative, n = 2,330).
