MR spectroscopy studies have tried to track these effects and correlate long-term effects of glucocorticoids with concentration changes of cerebral metabolites. However, a systematic spectroscopic study on short-term exposure to corticosteroids, in a dosage sufficient to impair memory performance, is lacking.

A case of persistent visual hallucinations of faces following LSD abuse: a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging study.

In this study, we report the case of a patient experiencing hallucinations of faces that could be reliably precipitated by looking at trees. Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), we found that face hallucinations were associated with increased and decreased neural activity in a number of cortical regions. Within the same fusiform face area, however, we found significant decreased and increased neural activity according to whether the patient was experiencing hallucinations or veridical perception of faces, respectively.

Acute exercise ameliorates reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor in patients with panic disorder.

The neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in depression and anxiety. Antidepressants and exercise increase BDNF expression, and both have an antidepressant and anxiolytic activity. To further characterize the association of anxiety, BDNF and exercise, we studied panic disorder patients (n=12) and individually matched healthy control subjects (n=12) in a standardized exercise paradigm.

Narrow-band versus white-light high definition television endoscopic imaging for screening colonoscopy: a prospective randomized trial.

Background & Aims: Narrow-band imaging (NBI) has been implemented in gastrointestinal endoscopy to improve the contrast of endoluminal pathologic structures, one of the aims being to increase colonic adenoma detection. Previous studies from referral centers have yielded variable and conflicting results with regard to improvement in adenoma detection rates by using NBI. The present large randomized trial was designed to finally settle this issue.

When a granular material such as sand is mixed with a certain amount of liquid, the surface tension of the latter bestows considerable stiffness to the material, which enables, for example, sand castles to be sculpted. The geometry of the liquid interface within the granular pile is of extraordinary complexity and strongly varies with the liquid content. Surprisingly, the mechanical properties of the pile are largely independent of the amount of liquid over a wide range.

Direct current stimulation for spine fusion in a nicotine exposure model.

Background Context: Decreased effectiveness in spinal fusion procedures in patients who smoke before, during, or after the operation has been noted in several clinical studies. In previous work, direct current (DC) electrical stimulation has been shown to enhance inter-transverse process fusion in a rabbit model.

Traditional surgical approaches to the talus often fail to afford adequate exposure of the talar body, especially in the case of complex talar body fractures. Preservation of the remaining blood supply to the talus is a main concern during operative repair and can be difficult to accomplish when multiple approaches and forceful manipulations are required to gain satisfactory exposure. A medial malleolar osteotomy was used to gain access to the talar body in situations in which the traditional approaches did not provide adequate exposure.
