Preclinical and clinical studies suggest that glucocorticoids disturb cognitive performance and neuronal integrity. MR spectroscopy studies have tried to track these effects and correlate long-term effects of glucocorticoids with concentration changes of cerebral metabolites. However, a systematic spectroscopic study on short-term exposure to corticosteroids, in a dosage sufficient to impair memory performance, is lacking.

To assess the efficiency and efficacy of these new treatment markers for disease status and progression are needed. Both the diagnosis and the monitoring of disease progression are challenging and mostly rely on clinical impression and functional testing of horizontal eye movements.

Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), we found that face hallucinations were associated with increased and decreased neural activity in a number of cortical regions. Within the same fusiform face area, however, we found significant decreased and increased neural activity according to whether the patient was experiencing hallucinations or veridical perception of faces, respectively.

Antidepressants and exercise increase BDNF expression, and both have an antidepressant and anxiolytic activity. To further characterize the association of anxiety, BDNF and exercise, we studied panic disorder patients (n=12) and individually matched healthy control subjects (n=12) in a standardized exercise paradigm.

In contrast, acute exercise may induce acute panic attacks or increase subjective anxiety in patients with panic disorder more than in other people. The effects of quiet rest or an aerobic treadmill exercise (30 min at an intensity of 70% of the maximal oxygen uptake, VO2max) on cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK-4) induced panic attacks were studied in a crossover design in 12 patients with panic disorder and 12 matched healthy subjects.

In contrast to this, the value foundation in Interactional nursing practice is understood from the point of view of the natural sciences as well as that of the human and social sciences. This article presents many-faceted practice-theory of nursing, which is situated in the dynamic field between these three sciences.

Previous studies from referral centers have yielded variable and conflicting results with regard to improvement in adenoma detection rates by using NBI. The present large randomized trial was designed to finally settle this issue.

The geometry of the liquid interface within the granular pile is of extraordinary complexity and strongly varies with the liquid content. Surprisingly, the mechanical properties of the pile are largely independent of the amount of liquid over a wide range.

In previous work, direct current (DC) electrical stimulation has been shown to enhance inter-transverse process fusion in a rabbit model.
Purpose: To test the efficacy of DC stimulation on bone healing in spinal fusion in rabbits exposed to nicotine.

Vascular stretch induces NADPH oxidase-derived superoxide anion (O2-), which has been implicated in hypertrophy and cell proliferation. We hypothesized that targeted delivery of an NADPH oxidase inhibitor to the adventitia would reduce stretch-induced vascular O2- and attenuate neointima formation. We designed a novel replication-deficient adenovirus containing a fibroblast-active promoter driving expression of NADPH oxidase inhibitory sequence gp91ds (Ad-PDGFbetaR-gp91ds/eGFP).

Preservation of the remaining blood supply to the talus is a main concern during operative repair and can be difficult to accomplish when multiple approaches and forceful manipulations are required to gain satisfactory exposure. A medial malleolar osteotomy was used to gain access to the talar body in situations in which the traditional approaches did not provide adequate exposure.

Methods: A consecutive series of patients with AO type C3 distal radius fractures treated by one surgeon were studied. Percutaneously placed pins were placed through the flexor carpi radialis tendon to reduce and stabilize volar fracture fragments of distal radius fractures when closed reduction was unsuccessful.

Thrombolytic therapy for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has produced the need for an accurate early diagnostic marker. We previously developed and assessed an assay for the creatine kinase (CK)-MB subforms; assay time is 25 minutes. Plasma MB2 (tissue subform) activity, MB1 (plasma-modified subform) activity, and MB2/MB1 ratio in 56 healthy individuals were 0.
