Racial and ethnic disparities in prior authorizations for patients with cancer.

Objective: Prior authorization is used to ensure providers treat patients with medically accepted treatments. Our objective was to evaluate prior authorization decisions in cancer care by race/ethnicity for commercially insured patients.

Study Design: Retrospective study of 18,041 patients diagnosed with cancer between January 1, 2017, and April 1, 2020.

Profiles and health risks (STIs, HCV, HIV) of injecting drug users.

Objective: The aim of this article is twofold: to present the sociodemographic profiles of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Togo and to assess the prevalence of health risks (sexually transmitted infections [STIs], the hepatitis C virus, and HIV), the problems linked to drug injection, and the factors characterizing PWIDs.

Participants And Methods: Using a questionnaire, this cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 384 PWIDs in Togo. The questionnaire focused on sociodemographic characteristics, consumption history, and known health problems and risks.

Trends in Medically Integrated Dispensing Among Oncology Practices.

Purpose: The integration of pharmacies with oncology practices-known as medically integrated dispensing or in-office dispensing-could improve care coordination but may incentivize overprescribing or inappropriate prescribing. Because little is known about this emerging phenomenon, we analyzed historical trends in medically integrated dispensing.

Methods: Annual IQVIA data on oncologists were linked to 2010-2019 National Council for Prescription Drug Programs pharmacy data; data on commercially insured patients diagnosed with any of six common cancer types; and summary data on providers' Medicare billing.

Agent-based modeling insights into the optimal distribution of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) program provides a free fresh fruit or vegetable snack to children in low-income schools between two and five times a week. This is an important nationwide program, but current funding levels are insufficient to reach all eligible schools. Thus, there is a need to develop insight on contextual factors that may impact the effectiveness of FFVP in facilitating the development of childhood food preferences.

Income Segregation and Access to Healthy Food.

Introduction: Differences in diet quality across socioeconomic groups are a key contributor to health gradient. An agent-based model was developed to explore how income segregation affects food access for poor households under idealized circumstances where the poor have the same knowledge of and preferences for healthy food as the nonpoor.

Methods: The agent-based model featured households with heterogeneous incomes and automobile ownership characteristics on the basis of 2016 U.

This article links contemporary psychoanalytic theories of the dream, especially Bion's, with the work of the American video artist Bill Viola, who is deeply influenced by altered states of consciousness and produces images of dreamlike quality. We discuss the oneiric and infantile roots of creativity and artistic inspiration, finally taking Viola's monumental artwork The Passing (1991) as paradigmatic of the artist's aesthetic and philosophical elaboration of the relationship between life and death.

This literature review concerns affective mentalizing in borderline addictive personality. This concept postulates the group between addictions and borderline personalities may correspond to Personality Disorders (PDs). First, we will present conceptualizations and evaluations of affective mentalizing.

[Phototoxic and photoallergic reactions].

Many artificial or naturally occurring substances are included under the term photosensitizer. After ultraviolet (UV) exposure such agents can lead to increased photosensitivity and subsequently to phototoxic or photoallergic reactions in the skin. From clinical observations and comprehensive studies typical reaction patterns can be deduced which can clarify the difference between phototoxic and photoallergic dermatitis.

Disabling work-related persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis from chlorpromazine and olaquindox in a pig breeder.

The use of veterinary medicines and medicated feed has a potential for the exposure of agricultural workers to pharmaceuticals with phototoxic and photoallergic side-effects. We present a 67-year-old self-employed farmer and pig breeder with a 22-year history of severe persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis due to direct occupational dermal and airborne contact to chlorpromazine (sedative) and olaquindox (antibiotic and animal growth promoter, AGP). His first dermatitis symptoms appeared at the age of 45 when the pig breeding was intensified.

[From hedgehogs to men. Zoophilic dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton erinacei in eight patients].

The hedgehog is an in Germany previously unrecognized source of human ringworm. Eight hedgehog caretakers from Göttingen and the surrounding area developed dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton erinacei. Four patients who handled the animals without gloves developed lesions on the hands that were more in keeping with hand eczema, leading to a delay in diagnosis.

[Toxic contact dermatitis from poison ivy in a private garden in Germany].

A couple suffered for 5 years from recurrent eruptions with vesicles and bullae after contact with an unknown "climbing weed" in their private garden in Germany. After this plant was identified as poison ivy and eradicated, their skin problems were solved. This is the first report of poison ivy in this setting.

[Superficial X-ray therapy of lip cancer after chronic excessive sun exposure of a 47-year-old autistic painter].

A 47-year-old autistic painter developed lip cancer after chronic excessive sun exposure. As she feared sun withdrawal during inpatient surgical excision, she refused this first-line treatment and therefore received outpatient X-ray therapy. The reason why she developed premature lip cancer and refused to stay in a hospital and the way she illustrated her "sun addiction" in her pictures is presented.

Proteomics analysis by two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis reveals the lack of a broad response of Neisseria meningitidis to in vitro-produced AI-2.

To investigate the effect of the autoinducer AI-2 on protein expression in Neisseria meningitidis, a luxS mutant of strain MC58 was grown in the presence and absence of in vitro-produced AI-2, and differential protein expression was assessed by two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis. N. meningitidis did not show a global response to AI-2 signaling activity.

[Solar urticaria].

Solar urticaria serves as a model to illustrate the photodiagnostic approach in rare photodermatoses and to demonstrate how patients can be effectively helped by prophylactic and therapeutic intervention. To accomplish these tasks, advanced knowledge and experience in photodermatology is required, along with equipment which is often available in specialized centers only. A list is attached listing the dermatology departments with photodiagnostic units in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Itraconazole in the treatment of tinea capitis in children. Case reports with long-term follow-up evaluation. Review of the literature.

Although griseofulvin is considered the standard treatment of tinea capitis in children, alternatives are being investigated. Our purpose was to determine the efficacy of itraconazole for kerion and noninflammatory tinea capitis. An open label study was performed on five patients.

Structural identification of a bacterial quorum-sensing signal containing boron.

Cell-cell communication in bacteria is accomplished through the exchange of extracellular signalling molecules called autoinducers. This process, termed quorum sensing, allows bacterial populations to coordinate gene expression. Community cooperation probably enhances the effectiveness of processes such as bioluminescence, virulence factor expression, antibiotic production and biofilm development.

The LuxS family of bacterial autoinducers: biosynthesis of a novel quorum-sensing signal molecule.

Many bacteria control gene expression in response to cell population density, and this phenomenon is called quorum sensing. In Gram-negative bacteria, quorum sensing typically involves the production, release and detection of acylated homoserine lactone signalling molecules called autoinducers. Vibrio harveyi, a Gram-negative bioluminescent marine bacterium, regulates light production in response to two distinct autoinducers (AI-1 and AI-2).

[Black nails caused by Proteus mirabilis].

Black nails caused by Proteus mirabilis were seen in a motor mechanic and in a petrol pump attendant. Proteus mirabilis is a gram-negative bacillus that generates hydrogen sulfide. This compound reacts with traces of metals in the nail plate such as zinc, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese, tin, copper and lead.

[Actinic prurigo].

The non-Native American type of actinic prurigo belongs to the group of rare idiopathic photodermatoses and therefore is often diagnosed with delay. The typical clinical and epidemiological features of actinic prurigo are described in a 10 year old girl. Detailed phototesting showed urticarial early onset and prurigo-like late onset reactions towards long-wave UVA.
