The over-expression of the apple SEP1/2 like gene (MADS8) supports its role as a key regulator of fleshy fruit patterning and ripening in pome fruit. Fruit flesh patterning in accessory fruits such as apple and strawberry has been associated with the SEPALLATA (SEP) class of genes. Antisense suppression of multiple SEP homologs greatly reduced fruit fleshy tissue growth and ripening in strawberries and apple, suggesting a co-evolution of fleshy fruit growth and its ability to ripen.

Breast cancer, a complex disease with a significant prevalence to form metastases, necessitates novel therapeutic strategies to improve treatment outcomes. Here, we present the results of a comparative molecular study of primary breast tumours, their metastases, and the corresponding primary cell lines using Desorption Electrospray Ionisation (DESI) and Laser-Assisted Rapid Evaporative Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (LA-REIMS) imaging. Our results show that ambient ionisation mass spectrometry technology is suitable for rapid characterisation of samples, providing a lipid- and metabolite-rich spectrum within seconds.

Herkogamy is the spatial separation of anthers and stigmas within complete flowers, and is a key floral trait that promotes outcrossing in many angiosperms. The degree of separation between pollen-producing anthers and receptive stigmas has been shown to influence rates of self-pollination amongst plants, with a reduction in herkogamy increasing rates of successful selfing in self-compatible species. Self-pollination is becoming a critical issue in horticultural crops grown in environments where biotic pollinators are limited, absent, or difficult to utilise.

During fruit ripening, polygalacturonases (PGs) are key contributors to the softening process in many species. Apple is a crisp fruit that normally exhibits only minor changes to cell walls and limited fruit softening. Here, we explore the effects of PG overexpression during fruit development using transgenic apple lines overexpressing the ripening-related endo-POLYGALACTURONASE1 gene.

There have been a considerable number of studies that have successfully sped up the flowering cycle in woody perennial horticultural species. To identify novel fibril forming AMPs, we generated a spleen-derived peptide library and screened it for the presence of amyloidogenic peptides.

Background: There is no agreed upon standard of care for borderline-resectable pancreatic cancer (BRPC) or locally-advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) patients regarding the benefit of chemotherapy or radiation alone or in combination.

Patients And Methods: We completed a retrospective cohort analysis of BRPC and LAPC patients at a cancer center with expertise in multi-disciplinary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) treatment over a 5-year period from 03/01/2014 to 03/01/2019 (cut-off date). The total evaluable newly diagnosed, treatment naïve, BRPC, and LAPC patients with adequate organ function and ability to obtain treatment after multidisciplinary review was 52 patients.

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) with megahertz repetition rate can provide novel insights into structural dynamics of biological macromolecule solutions. However, very high dose rates can lead to beam-induced dynamics and structural changes due to radiation damage. Here, we probe the dynamics of dense antibody protein (Ig-PEG) solutions using megahertz X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (MHz-XPCS) at the European XFEL.

Differential expression of ethylene biosynthetic and receptor genes in pollination-induced senescence of Dendrobium flowers.

Following successful pollination, Dendrobium orchid flowers rapidly undergo senescence. In Dendrobium cv. Khao Chaimongkol, compatible pollination resulted in faster ethylene production and more rapid development of senescence symptoms, such as drooping, epinasty, venation and yellowing, compared with non-pollinated controls or pollination with incompatible pollinia.

We assessed gene expression in each of 46 RGC types by single-cell transcriptomics following ONC and treatment.

Endotracheal Tube Migration in Steep Trendelenburg Position With the Estape TrenMAX Positioning System.

The extent of endotracheal tube (ETT) migration was studied in 25 adult female patients undergoing robotic-assisted laparoscopic gynecologic surgery while in a steep Trendelenburg position secured with the Estape TrenMAX positioning system (Innovative Medical Products, Plainville, CT, USA). In four patients, the distance from the tip of the ETT to the carina did not change. In three patients, the distance from the tip of the ETT to the carina decreased by 1 centimeter (cm).

Acute Cardiac Tamponade as a Complication of Pulmonary Vein Isolation Ablation.

Perioperative acute cardiac tamponade associated with perforation from pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) and radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) for the treatment of refractory atrial fibrillation (AF) is rare. If not identified early and managed promptly, it can lead to decreased ejection fraction, hypotension, and ultimately death. We report a case of acute tamponade that was diagnosed and successfully managed following PVI and RFCA.

The Gillenia trifoliata genome reveals dynamics correlated with growth and reproduction in Rosaceae.

The Rosaceae family has striking phenotypic diversity and high syntenic conservation. Gillenia trifoliata is sister species to the Maleae tribe of apple and ~1000 other species. Gillenia has many putative ancestral features, such as herb/sub-shrub habit, dry fruit-bearing and nine base chromosomes.

Background: The phytohormone ethylene controls many processes in plant development and acts as a key signaling molecule in response to biotic and abiotic stresses: it is rapidly induced by flooding, wounding, drought, and pathogen attack as well as during abscission and fruit ripening. In kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.), fruit ripening is characterized by two distinct phases: an early phase of system-1 ethylene biosynthesis characterized by absence of autocatalytic ethylene, followed by a late burst of autocatalytic (system-2) ethylene accompanied by aroma production and further ripening.

Background: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a common recurrent glomerulopathy associated with graft loss and patient survival after kidney transplantation (KT). However, its natural history, clinical predictors, and treatment response are still poorly understood. Steroid withdrawal regimens in KT have been associated with improvements in cardiovascular risk and patient outcomes.

Peridermal fruit skin formation in Actinidia sp. (kiwifruit) is associated with genetic loci controlling russeting and cuticle formation.

Background: The skin (exocarp) of fleshy fruit is hugely diverse across species. Most fruit types have a live epidermal skin covered by a layer of cuticle made up of cutin while a few create an outermost layer of dead cells (peridermal layer).

Results: In this study we undertook crosses between epidermal and peridermal skinned kiwifruit, and showed that epidermal skin is a semi-dominant trait.

Mitigation of radiation exposure during surgical hepatectomy after yttrium-90 radioembolization.

Yttrium-90 (Y-90) radioembolization for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma can present safety challenges when transplanting recently treated Y-90 patients. To reduce surgeons' contact with radioactive tissue and remain within occupational dose limits, current guidelines recommend delaying transplants at least 14 days, if possible. We wanted to determine the level of radiation exposure to the transplant surgeon when explanting an irradiated liver before the recommended decay period.
