Background: Nasal discharge is one of the cardinal symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis, impacting over 50% of patients. For patients with symptoms refractory to standard medical therapy, endoscopic sinus surgery is an option. The objective of this study is to characterize how nasal discharge improves after surgery in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

Article Synopsis
  • There's a critical need for timely interventions after trauma to help prevent PTSD, especially since many individuals experience severe sleep issues post-trauma.
  • This study aims to improve sleep quality using digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) in acutely traumatized patients, which could also alleviate PTSD symptoms and other related issues like anxiety and depression.
  • A randomized controlled trial will enroll 104 participants to compare the effects of dCBT-I with a sleep diary intervention, measuring sleep quality and trauma-related symptoms at different stages, potentially paving the way for accessible early interventions for those affected by trauma.

  • Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is caused by specific pathogens transmitted through hard ticks, primarily found in the Mediterranean region, but cases have emerged in central Europe, raising concerns.
  • Horses traveling to or imported from endemic areas face infection risks, with common clinical signs including fever and anemia, while diagnostics include various testing methods.
  • Treatment involves Imidocarb-dipropionate; however, some infections can lead to lifelong carrier statuses, posing economic challenges and requiring serological screening under international guidelines.

Objectives: is an obligate intracellular coccidian pathogen, with domestic cats and other members of the Felidae family serving as its definitive hosts. The aim of the study was to identify risk factors for positive test results.

Methods: A laboratory database was screened for PCR results from faecal samples and serology results (IgM, IgG) from serum/plasma taken from cats in Europe between January 2008 and December 2022.

  • Climate change is increasing the frequency of high temperatures, which poses serious health risks for patients with chronic diseases; empowering these patients is critical for their safety.
  • This study investigates how light to moderate heat affects health complaints and explores links between self-reported protective behaviors and psychosocial factors.
  • Conducted with 61 patients, the study collected data on their health complaints, protective behaviors, and chronic conditions, applying various statistical models to analyze the relationship between heat exposure and health outcomes.

  • The integration of sex and gender in research is essential for valid data, especially in studying the mental health of hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the extent of gender sensitivity in these studies is unclear.
  • A scoping review was conducted reviewing studies from various databases to evaluate the mental health of hospital staff, using specific psychometric scales and a developed gender sensitivity assessment tool.
  • Out of 3,112 identified studies, only 72 met the criteria, with most being cross-sectional; however, a significant majority mishandled the concepts of sex and gender, and only one study adequately addressed gender in their findings.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on the relationship between mRNA translation and decay in human cells, specifically highlighting the role of the cytoplasmic exosome in degrading mRNA linked to ribosomes during quality control.
  • - Researchers identified that HBS1L3 (SKI7) facilitates a direct physical coupling between EXO10 and the ribosome-bound SKI238 complex, enabling efficient mRNA handover for degradation.
  • - They discovered that the decay process involves a supercomplex formed by the exosome and ribosome, allowing mRNA to be efficiently threaded from the ribosome through the helicase to the exoribonuclease, effectively coordinating the decay mechanism.

Background: Despite clinical suspicion, most non-invasive ischemia tests for coronary artery disease (CAD) reveal unremarkable results. Patients with a coronary artery calcium score (CACS) of zero rarely have an abnormal positron emission tomography (PET) and could be deferred from further testing. However, most patients have some extent of coronary calcification.

Background: To date there is no causal treatment for post-COVID syndrome, leaving symptomatic treatments as the primary recourse. However, the practical implementation and effectiveness of these interventions remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the utilization frequency of symptomatic therapies and patient-reported effectiveness across various treatment modalities at a German post-COVID center.

This paper investigates how gender attitudes relate to the new cultural divide between cosmopolitans and communitarians in Europe, defined by immigration and EU attitudes. We examine how gender attitudes vary across this divide, how large and diverse the ideological groups are, and differences between Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Using data from the European Values Study 2017, we conduct a latent profile analysis to investigate the most common of nine possible combinations of attitudes regarding gender, immigration, and the EU.

Background And Objective: The impairments and duration of PASC (post-acute sequelae of COVID-19) symptoms in mental health have, to date, not been comprehensively examined. Our objective is to provide longitudinal data on the mental health of Post-COVID patients and to identify risk and protective factors associated with a severe or prolonged course.

Methods: The mental health of 265 Post-COVID patients of the outpatient Post-COVID centre of the University Hospital Erlangen was assessed 17.

Background: Though Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and other treatment models for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have shown to be efficient in inpatient and outpatient settings, there is a general shortage of these treatments. In Germany, most resources are spent on inpatient treatments and unspecific crisis interventions, while it is difficult to implement the necessary team structures in an outpatient setting. This study is testing an alternative approach focussing on outpatient treatment: Integrated Care Borderline (ICB) provides DBT for persons with severe BPD within the structures of an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the distribution of hospital discharges related to alcohol diagnoses by sex and age, and to track how these discharges changed over time across various diagnostic categories in German hospitals from 2012 to 2021.
  • Researchers performed a retrospective analysis on hospital discharges for patients aged 15-69, focusing on both primary and secondary alcohol-specific diagnoses, which were categorized using ICD-10 criteria.
  • Findings revealed that out of over 95 million hospital discharges, about 3.8 million (4%) involved alcohol-related issues, with a higher incidence in men and among older age groups, while the overall rate of such discharges decreased more significantly in younger adults between 2012 and 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • - The ornate dog tick has expanded its range across Europe, leading to more cases of canine babesiosis in previously unaffected areas of Germany.
  • - A study involving 5,913 dog specimens and 343 ticks was conducted from 2019 to 2023, using qPCR methods to detect and confirm the presence of the pathogen in a small percentage of samples.
  • - The findings indicate an increasing risk of infection for dogs in Germany, especially with more dogs traveling, prompting recommendations for year-round tick prevention measures.

The recall of memories of past events, experiences and emotions is a complex process. When experiencing traumatic events, as is the case with sexual violence, a host of additional complexities and difficulties arise. This becomes especially important in court cases which rely mostly or exclusively on the testimony of the victim, where the problem of the fallibility of memory takes center stage.
