We have prepared a diazo-based dry film for use in determining total serum bilirubin. On a transparent support are a buffered gelatin layer containing a polymeric quaternary amine (the mordant) and a white, reflective spreading layer that contains all of the components necessary for detection of bilirubin. The method is based on the use of dyphylline and Triton X-100 surfactant to dissociate bilirubin from albumin and subsequent reaction of bilirubin with a diazonium salt [4-(N-carboxymethylsulfamyl)benzenediazonium hexafluorophosphate].

Magnetic necklace: its therapeutic effectiveness on neck and shoulder pain.

The effect of the magnetic necklace on chronic neck and shoulder pain was studied on 101 volunteers, 46 males and 55 females. A double-blind method was applied on 4 divided groups (with pain vs without pain matched with magnetic vs nonmagnetic necklace). All the subjects wore the necklace 24 hours per day for 3 weeks.

Increasing participation and improving the quality of discussions in seventh-grade social studies classes.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate procedures to improve classroom discussions in seventh-grade social studies classes. An increased number of students participated in discussions when rules were stated for discussions, students were praised for their contributions, the teacher restated or paraphrased students' contributions aloud or on the blackboard, the teacher planned an outline of discussion questions, student contributions to discussions were recorded and were used to determine part of the students' grades for the class, and discussion grades were publicly posted.The second part of the study focused on procedures designed to improve quality of classroom discussions.

Effects of salicylate on HCO-3/Cl- exchange across the human erythrocyte membrane.

Changes in extracellular pH (pHo) in human red cell suspensions were monitored in a stopped-flow rapid reaction apparatus. A 20% suspension of washed human RBC in saline at pH 7 containing NaHCO3 and extracellular carbonic anhydrase was mixed with an equal volume of buffered saline solution at pH 6.7.

Cognition and long-term use of ganja (Cannabis).

Identification of strychnine binding sites in the rat retina.

[3H]Strychnine specifically binds to membrane fractions isolated from rat retinae. The binding is saturable, with an apparent dissociation constant, KD, of 14.3 x 10(-9) M and 205 fmol bound/mg protein.

Ontogeny and distribution of cysteine sulfinate transaminase in the rat brain.

Cysteine sulfinate transaminase catalyzes the conversion of cysteine sulfinate and alpha-ketoglutarate to beta-sulfonyl pyruvate and glutamate and is present in high concentration in neuronal tissue. During development, levels of cysteine sulfinate transaminase in whole rat brain homogenate increase twofold between days 10 and 21. At maturity, high levels of the enzyme are present in the synaptosomal fraction.

Measurement of antithrombin III in normal and pathologic states using chromogenic substrate S-2238. Comparison with immunoelectrophoretic and factor Xa inhibition assays.

Synthetic substrates have recently been developed for the assay of several of the proteolytic enzymes required for blood coagulation, One of these substrates, S-2238, is specific for thrombin and hence can also be used to measure antithrombin-heparin co-factor (AT-III). The thrombin remaining after neutralization by AT-III cleaves a chromophore, p-nitroaniline, from the substrate, which can then te quantified in a spectrophotometer. This new assay for AT-III inhibitory activity was evaluated for normal subjects and for patients who had certain pathologic conditions associated with reduced levels of AT-III.
