We examined the results of teaching pelvic floor muscle exercises (PME) on micturition parameters, urinary incontinence, post-micturition dribbling, and quality of life in patients after transurethral prostatectomy (TURP). Fifty-eight consecutive patients who were selected to undergo TURP for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were admitted into the study: 28 were randomly assigned to a control group (A), 30 formed the investigational group (B) during an initial visit conducted before surgery. In group B patients, perineal exercises were demonstrated in detail, and tested for their correct use via simultaneous rectal and abdominal examination.

Objective: We investigated the distribution of MICA triplet repeat polymorphism in a random population and in patients with seronegative spondyloarthritis from Sardinia compared to continental Italy.

Methods: We analyzed the distribution of MICA triplet repeat polymorphism in HLA-B*2709 [not associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS)] and B*2705 (associated with AS) haplotypes, to verify whether the strong association of MICA-A4 with HLA-B27 reported in other populations is maintained in Sardinia, and compared the distribution of MICA-A alleles in HLA-B27 negative versus HLA-B27+ patients with AS.

Results: We found that the frequency of MICA-A4 triplet repeat allele in a random Sardinia population is higher (53.

Cu and Zn have been shown to accumulate in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients. We have previously reported that Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) bind amyloid beta (Abeta), explaining their enrichment in plaque pathology. Here we detail the stoichiometries and binding affinities of multiple cooperative Cu(2+)-binding sites on synthetic Abeta1-40 and Abeta1-42.

Articles included in this review reflect the recent advances made in basic research and the clinical management of psoriatic arthritis in 1999. Some of these advances are destined to modify the current approach to the disease. The problems related to nosology and epidemiology, the two still controversial aspects, are discussed first.

Abeta derived from amyloid plaques of Alzheimer's disease-affected brain contain several oxidative posttranslational modifications. In this study we have characterized the amino acid content of human amyloid-derived Abeta and compared it with that of human synthetic Abeta subjected to metal-catalyzed oxidation. Human amyloid derived Abeta has an increased content of arginine (46%) and glutamate/glutamine residues (28%), but a decreased content of histidine residues (-32%) as compared to the expected amino acid content.

The kynurenine pathway catabolite 3-hydroxykynurenine (3HK) and redox-active metals such as copper and iron are implicated in cataractogenesis. Here we investigate the reaction of kynurenine pathway catabolites with copper and iron, as well as interactions with the major lenticular structural proteins, the alpha-crystallins. The o-aminophenol kynurenine catabolites 3HK and 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3HAA) reduced Cu(II)>Fe(III) to Cu(I) and Fe(II), respectively, whereas quinolinic acid and the nonphenolic kynurenine catabolites kynurenine and anthranilic acid did not reduce either metal.

Objective: We intended to ascertain the true role played by large-size prostatic glands with BPH in impeding ureteroscopy; since no such impediment was experienced by the authors, we then listed the most frequent obstacles to ureteroscopy, contrary to what is commonly reported in literature.

Materials And Methods: Endourological reports on a series of 2,147 diagnostic or therapeutic ureteroscopies were examined, together with the patients' clinical records. Male patients accounted for 1,288 cases.

Oxidative stress markers as well as high concentrations of copper are found in the vicinity of Abeta amyloid deposits in Alzheimer's disease. The neurotoxicity of Abeta in cell culture has been linked to H(2)O(2) generation by an unknown mechanism. We now report that Cu(II) markedly potentiates the neurotoxicity exhibited by Abeta in cell culture.

The definition of psoriatic arthritis may be at least inadequate. Moreover, diagnostic criteria proposed may be too restrictive. This may have affected the collection of reliable epidemiological data and may also influenced the classification of the disease.

Several clustered slow earthquakes have been recorded by a geodetic interferometer in central Italy. The strain rise times of the events range from tens to thousands of seconds, and the seismic moment scales with the square root of the rise time. This scaling law contrasts with the conservative assumption of constant rupture velocity in fault modeling but is consistent with the occurrence of a slow rupture propagation analogous to heat diffusion in a slab.

We examined the urodynamics, particularly voiding dysfunction, in patients with a neobladder. Free uroflowmetry, pressure-flow study, and voiding cystourethrography were performed in 22 patients (mean age 65 years) at a mean of 21 months after ileal neobladder substitution. The results of free uroflowmetry were used to divide patients into two groups: the good voiders and the poor.

This article examines the technical modalities or ureteral catheterization. The authors also discuss unconventional modalities which, if used without prejudice, can sometimes constitute brilliant and economic solutions to complex problems which are often impossible to resolve otherwise. After a summary of the history of ureteral catheterization, the authors present the main indications for temporary ureteral catheterization: radiographic and fluoroscopic examination of the ureter; separate cytological harvesting; separate bacteriological harvesting; confirmation of the side of unilateral haematuria; preliminary temporary dilatation of the ureter to prepare it for ureteroscopy; temporary drainage of the excretory tract after endourological investigation.

Oxidative stress markers characterize the neuropathology both of Alzheimer's disease and of amyloid-bearing transgenic mice. The neurotoxicity of amyloid A beta peptides has been linked to peroxide generation in cell cultures by an unknown mechanism. We now show that human A beta directly produces hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by a mechanism that involves the reduction of metal ions, Fe(III) or Cu(II), setting up conditions for Fenton-type chemistry.
