: Point-of-care lung ultrasonography (LUS) represents an accurate diagnostic tool in older patients with respiratory failure. The integration of LUS with ultrasonographic assessment of diaphragm thickness and excursion, right vastus lateralis (RVL) muscle thickness and cross-sectional area (CSA) could provide real-time information on frailty and sarcopenia. The primary aim of this proof-of-concept prospective study was to evaluate clinical correlates of thoracic, diaphragmatic, and muscular ultrasound to characterize the associations between frailty, respiratory failure, and sarcopenia in older patients hospitalized for acute respiratory complaints.

In this study, we have used live cell fluorescence imaging methods along with other biochemical techniques to follow the mechanisms used by IQGAP1 to enhance EGF signaling. We show that IQGAP1 enhances EGF signaling by promoting the oligomerization of its receptor, EGFR, upon EGF addition along with concurrent IQGAP oligomerization.

Recent studies suggest that PLCβ1 expression plays a role in the differentiation of two types of cultured neuronal cells (PC12 and SK-N-SH) through a mechanism independent of Gα. Here, we show that, similar to that observed in PC12 and SK-N-SH cells, PLCβ1 expression increases when human NT2 cells are induced to differentiate either through cytosine-β-D-arabinofuranoside or retinoic acid.

Its impact on patients with chronic respiratory diseases, particularly beyond chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), remains poorly understood.
Aims: To evaluate the association between frailty index and 5-year mortality across different "spirometric" patterns and the variation in their occurring frailty determinants.
The asthmatic inflammatory process results in the generation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are subsequently secreted by the airways. The study of these elements through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which can identify individual molecules with a discriminatory capacity of over 85%, and electronic-Nose (e-NOSE), which is able to perform a quick onboard pattern-recognition analysis of VOCs, has allowed new prospects for non-invasive analysis of the disease in an "omics" approach. In this review, we aim to collect and compare the progress made in VOCs analysis using the two methods and their instrumental characteristics.

The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) report recommends smoking cessation, pharmacological therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation, but this clinical course can be negatively influenced by undernutrition, a condition documented in about 20% of COPD patients. An altered energy balance characterized by an insufficient intake of energy and nutrients is the primary cause of undernutrition, therefore the aim of this study is to investigate whether clinical and instrumental variables collected during a routine respiratory assessment associate with an altered energy balance in order to identify COPD patients at higher risk of undernutrition worth of further assessment.
