Objectives: An increased number of elderly individuals affected by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been reported, including both patients with RA onset in advanced age and patients aged with the disease. In this registry-based study, we aimed to analyze the retention rate and cause of discontinuation of biologic (b) and targeted synthetic (ts)-disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) in RA patients over 65 year old.

Methods: RA patients enrolled in the Italian GISEA registry and starting a b- or a ts-DMARD over 65 years of age were included.

Objective: To evaluate whether orthostatic hypotension (OH) or supine hypertension (SH) is associated with brain atrophy and white matter hyperintensities (WMH), we analyzed clinical and radiologic data from a large multicenter consortium of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB).

Methods: Supine and orthostatic blood pressure (BP) and structural MRI data were extracted from patients with PD and DLB evaluated at 8 tertiary-referral centers in the United States, Canada, Italy, and Japan. OH was defined as a systolic/diastolic BP fall ≥20/10 mm Hg within 3 minutes of standing from the supine position (severe ≥30/15 mm Hg) and SH as a BP ≥140/90 mm Hg with normal sitting BP.

Introduction: neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels have been proposed as reliable biomarkers of neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD) but the relationship between plasma NfL, clinical subtypes of PD and motor progression is still debated.

Methods: plasma NfL concentration was measured in 45 healthy controls and consecutive 92 PD patients who underwent an extensive motor and non-motor assessment at baseline and after 2 years of follow-up. PD malignant phenotype was defined as the combination of at least two out of cognitive impairment, orthostatic hypotension and REM sleep behavior disorder.

Methods: In this retrospective, single-center cohort study, we included all adult inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to a neuro-COVID unit beginning February 21, 2020, who had been discharged or died by April 5, 2020. Personalized medicine is becoming an important tool in oncology, both in preventing disease and in optimizing the treatment of existing cancers. Here we describe the cases of 2 patients with relevant systemic toxicity following 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) therapy and we study the more frequent polymorphisms in the target genes, in particular: (1) the variability in the number of 28-base repetitions present in the 5'-untranslated sequence of the thymidine synthase gene; (2) the presence of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene, and (3) the presence of mRNA splicing in intron 14 of the hepatic enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase. The 5-FU gene profile of our patients strongly suggested that the polymorphisms expressed may contribute to the adverse effects seen during the therapy.

Two pig cell lines derived from kidney and trachea tissues and referred to as newborn swine kidney (NSK) and newborn pig trachea (NPTr) were established following serial culture of primary cells. They were characterized by an epithelial-like morphology, high capacity to replicate and stability of the cell monolayer for several days after seeding. Their modal chromosome number was modified in comparison to that of primary swine cells and they both displayed a transforming potential in vitro and displayed oncogenicity in nude mice.

The paper reports the occurrence of myocardial infarctions in a patient with severe deficiency of blood coagulation factor XII (Hageman factor). Factor XII plays a central role in the intrinsic activation of fibrinolysis and consequently the defective intrinsic fibrinolytic activity detected in the present case casts some doubt on its role in the increased vulnerability to thrombotic accident.
