Survey on Animal Welfare in Nine Hundred and Forty Three Italian Dairy Farms.

The final results of a survey on welfare of dairy cows in 7 Italian Regions are presented. The study has been performed on 943 farms in southern and central Italy to highlight critical and strong points concerning animal welfare in dairy systems, by using direct and indirect criteria. To assess animal welfare, a checklist based on 303 parameters has been used; indirect criteria have been organised in 5 general areas concerning , , , , ; other resource-based criteria were considered in 5 specific areas for the different productive categories (lactating cows, dry cows, pregnant heifers, cows comeback, calves up to 8 weeks and calves between 8 weeks and 6 months); finally, an section focused on animal based criteria.

Appendicular mucocele: two case reports and literature review.

The classification of mucinous tumors of the vermiform appendix is quite controversial, and includes a spectrum of neoplastic lesions ranging from benign proliferations, intraluminal, to invasive adenocarcinomas. Among the complications of appendicular mucinous neoplasms we should mention the "pseudomyxoma peritonei", a condition caused by cancerous cells (mucinous adenocarcinoma) that produce abundant mucin or gelationous ascites. Mucinous neoplasms of the appendix are rare diseases of unknown etiology.

Although the small intestine constitutes over 75% of the length and 90% of the mucosal surface of the gastrointestinal tract, small intestine cancer is rare and accounts for only 1% of gastrointestinal malignancies. Adenocarcinoma together with carcinoid tumours are the most common histological types of primary malignant tumours of the small bowel but others, including lymphoma and leiomyosarcoma, may less frequently be encountered. Adenocarcinomas are predominantly located in the duodenum.

Isolated splenic metastasis of ovaric cancer. Case report and literature review.

Splenic metastasis is extremely rare and are usually found in conjunction with metastasis of other organs. In addition, late recurrence even after 10 years of operation is very unusual. The most common sources of splenic metastasis are lung, colonrectal, melanoma, breast and ovarian carcinoma.

Complications of diverticular disease: surgical laparoscopic treatment.

Surgical treatment of complicated colonic diverticular disease is still debatable. The aim of our study was to evaluate the outcome of laparoscopic colon resection in patients with diverticulitis and with complications like colon-vescical fistula, peridiverticular abscess, perforation or stricture. All patients underwent laparoscopic colectomy within 8 years period.

Totally laparoscopic resection of a very large gastric GIST.

Laparoscopic approach was safely performed for the diagnosis and treatment of the submucosal tumors of the stomach because it is associated with low morbidity, mortality, and sound oncologic outcomes. However, no report on the long-term safety and efficacy of this surgery for large sized gastric GISTs has been published to date. We present a 63-year-old female case of a large gastric GIST of 19 cm removed by laparoscopic wedge resection.

Sigmoid volvulus: is it a possible complication after stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR)?

We report a case of sigmoid volvulus post-stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) for obstructed defecation. The patient, a 68-yearold woman with chronic constipation and dolichosigma, two days post-STARR presented severe abdominal pain. CT revealed sigmoid ischemia.

Considerations on the sphere of application of European Union animal protection legislation for horses.

The increasing awareness of animal welfare issues among consumers and the general public in the European Union has brought about the adoption of laws for the protection of production animals throughout the various steps of the food chain, from breeding to slaughter. Considering that horses may be kept for a variety of reasons, including as companion animals and as farm animals, protective legislation in Europe applies to this species only partially. In consistency with the areas of competence of the European Union, it is the purpose of the activity (be it economic/commercial or neither) and not the final purpose of the equine (whether they are intended for human consumption or not) along the entire food chain that determines the application of the above legislation.

Synchronous primary malignant tumors of the breast, caecum and sigma. Case report.

We present the case of a patient with a double adenocarcinoma of the right colon and sigma associated with a bilateral infiltrating ductal breast carcinoma. Sigma and caecum bowel cancers were diagnosed at colonoscopy, with computerized tomography staging, while breast cancer was found with screening mammography. Following right hemicolectomy , sigmoidectomy and bilateral mastectomy the histology confirmed the presence of colonic adenocarcinoma and infiltrating and in situ lobular cancer.

Benefits of laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the geriatric patient.

Background: Our aim is the retrospective valuation of results in over 75 year-old patients, with colorectal cancer, treated with laparoscopic and laparotomic surgery, considering how laparoscopic surgery has improved these patients' outcome.

Patients And Methods: We took all over 75 year-old patients, affected by colorectal cancer, treated with colectomy. Patients has been divided into two groups: laparotomy group and laparoscopy group.

Introduction: Laparoscopic approach for treatment of colorectal lesion is gaining acceptance gradually. Evidence from numerous randomised controlled trials has shown the short-term benefits of laparoscopic colon resection over open surgery, and its long-term outcomes also does not differ considerably from those of open surgery. This study aims at a retrospective analysis of operative and short term outcomes of patients.

Small bowel adenocarcinoma. Two case reports.

Introduction. Small bowel adenocarcinoma is a rare tumor, with a still not well studied tumorigenesis process, and non-specific symptoms that cause a delay in the diagnosis and consequently a worst outcome for the patient. Videocapsule endoscopy (VCE) and double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) have revolutionized the diagnosis and management of patients with small bowel diseases.

A totally mini-invasive approach for colorectal laparoscopic surgery.

Aim: To study the short-term outcome of patients treated with laparoscopic right colectomy and how intracorporeal anastomosis has improved the outcome.

Methods: We retrospectively examined all patients affected by colorectal cancer who underwent a laparoscopic right colectomy between January 2006 and December 2010 in our department. Our evaluation criteria were: diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma at presurgical biopsy, elective surgery, and the same surgeon.

Necrotizing fasciitis: a surgical emergency.

Accurate assessment and timely interventions are critical in the treatment of patients affected with necrotizing fasciitis, a rare, fulminating, potentially life-threatening, infectious process of the soft tissues. Understanding the natural history and unique characteristics of this disease is crucial to achieve early recognition, effective management and a favorable patient outcome. Classic symptoms include severe pain, erythema, mottling, crepitus, skin anesthesia, warmth, tenderness, bullous formations and edema in the affected area and fever.

Antiviral activity of HPMPC (cidofovir) against orf virus infected lambs.

(S)-1-[3-hydroxy-2-(phosphonomethoxy)propyl]cytosine [corrected] (HPMPC, cidofovir, CDV, Vistide) is an acyclic nucleoside analogue with a potent and selective activity against a broad spectrum of DNA viruses including the poxviruses. In this study we present the results of different treatment regimens in lambs experimentally infected with orf virus with different cidofovir formulations prepared in Beeler basis and Unguentum M. Our results show that choice of excipient, concentration of codofovir [corrected] and treatment regimen were all important to the clinical outcome of the therapy.
