Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) has been used as a model organism in different research fields, including reproductive physiology. Sperm motility is the most important marker for male fertility in fish and, thus, reproduction success. However, because of small volume of ejaculate and short motility duration, it is still challenging to manage the sperm collection and analysis in small model fish.

A comprehensive study of modified three-month pediatrics training curriculum at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and its impact on student satisfaction.

Objectives: Continuous curriculum improvements reveal the dedication of policy-makers to raising the quality of education and student learning. This study aims to report the impact of curriculum changes to the three-month pediatric course curriculum at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU) on the satisfaction levels of medical students.

Methods: One hundred eighteen 4-5 years medical students, who had completed their pediatric clinical rotation in SBMU-affiliated teaching hospitals including Mofid Children Hospital, Loghman Hakim Hospital, Shohada-e-Tajrish Hospital, and Imam Hossein Hospital from January to December 2022 were included in this cross-sectional study.

Strengths and limitations of reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) in the perspective of DNA methylation analysis in fish: a case-study on rainbow trout spermatozoa.

DNA methylation in CpG dinucleotides is an important epigenetic mark in fish spermatozoa since it has been shown that some sperm methylome features are transmitted to the offspring. Reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) is one genome-scale methods developed to assess DNA methylation at CpG sites. It allows the sequencing of a reduced fraction of the genome expected to be enriched in CpGs.

Background: In Saudi Arabia (SA), there has been an alarming increase in the prevalence of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) over the last three decades. Despite being one of the largest countries in the Middle East, renal conditions remain understudied, and there is limited data on their epidemiology and outcomes in SA.

Objectives: To document the experience of establishing a local renal registry assessing the epidemiology of CKD and identifying potential areas for improving the quality and delivery of care for CKD patients.

Association between Hypertension and Atrial Fibrillation in Patients on Hemodialysis.

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and the association between hypertension (HTN) and atrial fibrillation (AF) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. A chart review-based, cross-sectional study was conducted on HD patients who had received HD for at least 6 months. Demographic, hemodynamic, and laboratory data were retrieved from the BestCare system, and the main outcomes were blood pressure before and after dialysis, and the presence of AF.

The Relationship Between C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Concentrations and Erythropoietin Resistance, Hospital Admission Rate, Control of Mineral Metabolism, and Comorbidity in Hemodialysis Patients.

Background End-stage kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis are prone to develop inflammation detected by high serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. This study highlights the association between CRP and the erythropoietin resistance index, hospital admission rate, control of mineral metabolism, and comorbidities in a tertiary hospital and two dialysis centers in Saudi Arabia. Objectives The objective of the study is to assess the relationship between CRP levels and hemoglobin level, hospital admission rate, mineral metabolism, and comorbidity in hemodialysis patients.

Indications, success, and adverse event rates of pediatric endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: To improve knowledge on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in children, we aimed to study the proportion of indications, success rate and complication of ERCP.

Methods: We performed a systematic search of all articles published up to December 2022 in the following databases: Cochrane Library, PubMed (MEDLINE) and Scopus. The meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model.

Spermatozoa are the cells that are most commonly used for cryopreservation of valuable genetic resources in aquaculture. It is known that fish spermatozoa transmit to the embryo not only their genetic but also their epigenetic profile, especially DNA methylation. Therefore, any alteration of the DNA methylation profile in spermatozoa induces the risk of transmitting epigenetic alterations to the offspring.

Co-occurrence of celiac disease and glycogen storage disease in a five-year-old patient with diabetes mellitus; a case report.

A patient presented with edema, ascites and jaundice. Histologic report was consistent with Celiac Disease. Liver biopsy commensurate with Glycogen storage disease III, which was confirmed by genetic testing.

Effect of omega-3 supplementation on lipid profile in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Purpose: Dyslipidemia is considered as a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Yet various trials with wide ranges of doses and durations have reported contradictory results. We undertook this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine whether omega-3 supplementation can affect lipid profile in children and adolescents.

Blood lead level evaluation in children presenting with chronic constipation in Tehran-Iran: a cross-sectional study.

Constipation is a common reason for children seeking medical care worldwide. Abdominal complaints and constipation are also common in lead-poisoned children. This study evaluates the prevalence of abnormal blood lead levels (BLL) among pediatric and adolescent patients and examines the association of constipation with elevated BLL.

Aim: Vitamin D deficiency is very common among children with IBD. Since there are conflicting results regarding the association of vitamin D with IBD, we conducted this systematic review to confirm the association of vitamin D with IBD.

Methods: We conducted a systematic search in Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar to find relevant studies.

Background Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect millions of people of all ages around the world. It constitutes one of the most common conditions encountered in emergency departments (EDs). In this study, we aimed to inquire into the prevalence of UTIs as the hospitalization primary diagnosis through the emergency department and to research the seasonal pattern, accuracy of the diagnostic methods used, and final diagnosis.

Background: Chitosan is one of dietary fiber that has received great attention in improving obesity-related markers, but little is known on its effects on adolescents.

Objectives: To analyze the effects of chitosan supplementation on obesity-related cardiometabolic markers and appetite-related hormones in adolescents with overweight or obesity.

Methods And Analysis: A randomized clinical trial was performed on 64 adolescents with overweight and obesity, who were randomly allocated to receive chitosan supplementation (n = 32) or placebo as control (n = 32) for 12 weeks.

Despite the enormous economic and societal burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD), its pathogenesis remains elusive, impeding specific diagnosis and targeted therapy. Herein, we sought to elucidate the genetic causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and identify genetic variants associated with CKD and related traits in Saudi kidney disease patients. We applied a genetic testing approach using a targeted next-generation sequencing gene panel including 102 genes causative or associated with CKD.

The KDQOL has been through several developmental processes, with the most recent one being the KDQOL-36™. Our study evaluated the validity and reliability of the Arabic-translated KDQOL-36™ survey in Saudi chronic dialysis patients.

Effects of probiotic supplementation on abdominal pain severity in pediatric patients with irritable bowel syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Background: Probiotic supplementation has been used to alleviate abdominal pain in children and adolescents with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but the evidence is not compelling. Thus, a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were performed to investigate the effects of probiotic supplementation on abdominal pain in pediatric patients with IBS.

Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Embase were the available databases searched to find relevant randomized clinical trials up to April 2021.

Saudi pediatric residents' confidence in handling ethical situations and factors influencing it.

Background: During their residency program, pediatric residents frequently face ethical challenges. The aim of the study is to evaluate the pediatric residents' knowledge and confidence to handle common ethical dilemmas during their training.

Methods: This is a survey-based cross-sectional study on all pediatric residents in the largest pediatric training center in Saudi Arabia.
